Camera rumors for 2016?

I like black magic color/raw but they continually have issues trying to maintain any kind of release schedule and quality control. If their working on anything new, I think it would be stupid to showcase it at NAB this year, they need to fulfill the outstanding orders, and slowly try to rebuild trust through delivering cameras that are solid performers and ready to ship. Here we are 11 months later and they've just barely begun getting ursa 4.6 to the early buyers. I understand the need to create a buzz at Nab, but I feel like their digging themselves in deeper and further tarnishing their reputation by this pattern. I can understand this happening on occasion, it even happens to the big boys from time to time. Just not every time.
Yeah, you'd think BMD would either figure out how to accelerate their production schedule or refrain from announcing cameras until much closer to release. But they'll probably announce a new or improved camera at NAB. I personally would like to see a DCI 4K/UHD HyperDeck Shuttle that could do DNxHR, ProRes, and raw.

with those rebates on all the canon eng cams wouldnt it be likely that theyll introduce a new line of those this year?

IMO, BMD the Camera Maker is no longer relevant. For the low budget/no budget type of shoots, GH4 w/V-Log is now $1,300 and a 4K external monitor/recorder with ProRes HQ go for as little as $1,000. Then you also have NX1, A6300 (soon), RX10II, A7SII/RII and even the camcorder type like DVX200 (let's see what the new update looks like). And, once you add up everything for a ready-to-shoot package, they're competing with FS5/7 and even Red Raven. The time when their 2.5K CC was the sole piece with a better than 1080p resolution for under $10,000 is long gone. Nowadays, there are point&shoot's with 4K. There are bridge cameras with 4K. While they've been struggling to get their product out to the store shelves, their niche has basically been filled by others. And there's nowhere left for them to go.

I don't think BMD isn't relevant. Wich has 4:2:2 60p under 6K ( not to mention RAW)?
FS7 is like 8K nd Raven +10K.
So I think BMD sure does fill a gab. I do think they are arses because of the delaying thing and not being clear about it.

The more frustrating thing with BM is the build quality and the quirks you have to deal with. I wonder how the sensor will deal with IR pollution this time. Not many imagining companies have gotten that really sorted, asides from Canon.

I also think BMD cameras are becoming much less relevant in today's market.
- The pocket is still wonderfully awesome, but if you love it you already have one, I don't think they're selling many of those anymore.
- The 4K sensor has very limited DR so, while it may be interesting for some people, I won't even consider it.
- And the 4.6K sensor can only be found on a body that costs as much as the FS5 (or even FS7 depending on how you want to rig it).

If they come out with a sub-$3K body with the 4.6K sensor (obviously with limited features, think "pouch" instead of "pocket", not Ursa Mini), then they can make a strong comeback. But the existence tax is actually a thing. NAB 2016 is just around the corner and I don't think you can buy the 4.6K mini anywhere yet.

If you are after a 'cinematic' image then BM cameras are still very relevant - and since when has 11-12 stops dr become very limited, is right on par with other cameras like Sony A7s2 which seems to get a lot of folk excited. They are crap at meeting deadlines it is true - but the Micro cinema camera will take over from the pocket and be the sub £1k camera for creating narrative work

What can you say about BM and deadlines? They are horrible. But if they can make an Ursa 4.6 Micro which would be their version of the Fs5 then everybody will love them all over again...in a year when it hits the shelves! To me, the Ursa Mini 4.6 is a great tool but it is still kind of large and a little higher priced. If they can make a micro version with a normal camcorder ergonomic design like the Fs5 I think it would appeal to many shooters. But their camera design has hardly been normal up to this point.

Why is the Ursa mini being compared to the Fs5 or FS7. The Ursa mini 4.6 is the cheapest of them all and shoots raw without any add on recorders. How is this less relevant.

IIRC, neither URSA Mini model comes with a viewfinder. The BMD URSA viewfinder is $1,495. Plus, I'd want the $395 shoulder-mount kit. And the Mini doesn't have built-in ND filters (IIRC); not an issue to everyone but one for me and others. For how I'd want to use them, the BMD ready-to-roll price isn't tons less than some other interesting cameras. That doesn't rule out the BMD cameras, of course.

Could be an interesting NAB for under-$10,000 cameras. At least, I hope it will be. And I hope what we see on the show floor is available soon soon soon after the show.

More expensive cameras, I'll just keep renting (and hiring better operators to run)

So I hope to see:

Panasonic AG-AF200
With perhaps some of the clever features in the JVC GY-LS300
(note the recent deals on the AF100 and the LS300)

Panasonic DVX200a
With deeper color recording. And maybe a little smaller :-)

Canon C200
Priced and featured to compete with the FS5 and FS7 (but cheaper than both )

JVC GY-LS400 or LS300a
With in-camera image stabilization

Sony FS5a and FS7a
With in-camera stabilization and TC+Genlock that doesn't require the external recorder

BMD camera with built-in ND filters, and rugged construction
Not saying the current cam's aren't rugged, but I'd like to be sure the camera's will survive tough doc use.

What did I miss? What did I get wrong? What do you think we'll see this April?

It needs an EVF, which brings it up to the FS-7 territory and most people won't shoot 4K Raw - even the prime time TV shows don't - and, if they do, they are likely to have the means for a higher end camera anyway.

PS. No one is stopping anyone from purchasing BMD (or Kinefinity or Digital Bolex or whatever). It's just that there aren't that many compelling reasons left other than "I like the URSA look" to buy it.

A French photo-video site had a chat with a Sony manager, who said that, if folks were impressed with Sony's product in 2015, 2016 will be a lot more impressive. That's exactly the same thing as a Canon manager said, "If you hated our product in 2015, 2016 will be even worse".

OK, the Canon dude didn't exactly say that but, if they think of catching up, they better catch up to 2017, not to 2014.

That is funny! If Sony is going to beat 2015 then they are really on a tear. Their competition is going to be left in the dust. Good time to wait and see what is on the horizon.

I feel like there might be another hardware upgrade to the F55, just to maybe fix the LUT output problems the camera has, but other than that the only other thing Sony will do is add a top end Alexa style F65 replacement.

Right. It can use most any SDI evf not just the BM one which from reviews is a great EVF and one of the cheapest quality evfs around, Global shutter, 60p non global shutter, 15 stops DR, onboard raw recording, can shoot 4K, 3K, 2K and HD in three flavors of Prores, flip out screen, its cheap. Yeah I see how irrelevant it is because the viewfinder isn't included and because it isn't the size of a deck of cards delivering H264 4:2:0.

I'm with Mico on this - and image quality doesn't seem to figure that high in importance here for some reason - the "Ursa look" - particularly what is coming out of the 4.6k recently, is a thing of beauty and to my eyes looks nicer than anything I've seen from the fs7 for example. The Ursa 4k footage looks mighty fine too. Is that not compelling enough? To me image is the most important factor, I guess we have very different needs in a camera

blackmagic is definitely still relevant. i'm more interested in the ursa mini 4.6k than any other camera out right now. it's just a matter of when can they deliver.
