Camera rumors for 2016?

24fps was a compromise of the slowest frame rate that would allow optical sound at a reasonable quality level. A business decision and nothing to do with anything else. Economics wanted the lowest cost for the distribution of film to the cinemas so the slowest frame rate was needed for the least cost of distribution. However sound was introduced implemented with an optical track so speed of film through the gate would govern the frequency response. For acceptable music and voice 24fps was chosen. I read somewhere the engineers wanted 30 fps but the accountants won !!! The rest is history as the saying goes. As far as how we view frame rate of course we will all know it is not real and therefore it comes down to what we perceive as dreamlike/story or an attempt to look as if we are looking through a window on reality. Various studies seem to point to that break point at around 48fps. Less is perceived as story telling and above attempt at real.

The idea that there is only about a one or two stop aperture difference between sensor sizes is not true. It's more like six or seven stops, and this does not address the compression over space differential. There is a lot bigger difference.

I've posted this before, & unfortunately no longer have the side-by-side tests, but there is a different look to images shot on a smaller format with a wider aperture than a larger format with a deeper, but (supposedly) equivalent aperture (in DOF terms).

It's more than resolution, rather it's the look, & the larger the difference in format the more it's apparent. Almost any professional still photographer that's extensively shot 35mm, 6x7, 4x5, & 8x10, would likely concur.

Exactly. Just watch jacque Tati's Playtime on TV. It was shot on 70mm and you can see and feel a definite difference that you can't put your finger on.

But you can put your finger on Samuel H's comparison, which alternates two different sensor sizes when you mouse over.

You can also read about it and see other comparisons --- some of which I have posted.

Panasonic GH3, one of the seminal DSLR style cameras of the last few years, is listed as discontinued. It had a nice three and a half year run. GH5 is presumably right around the corner. Out with the old ...

PS. Meanwhile, there are some big savings to be had on G7 and GX8.

This isn't about cameras per se ... well, maybe about the cameras in 2017 or 2018.

But.

At this moment, there's a Flash Memory Summit held in Santa Clara, CA. It's a major gathering with all the major and many minor players. Seagate showed up with a 60 TB drive (that's right, I said "sixty"). Lenovo is coming with a puny 48 TB drive. Micron and Intel are beginning to ship out their X-Point technology, which is supposed to be half a zillion times better than anything else. According to Intel, they're basically booked for the next three-four years but - and here's where it may concern the DVXUsers - there may be interest from the high end camera manufacturers. Otherwise, it's all going to the high end enterprise sector.

i sold my hassleblad after testing it against the new at the time nikon d3 - there was no special look that was not explained by fstop sensor size ratio

but faster glass was available for the smaller sensor

im a fan of big sensors cod you get big pixels but I think a special look is a myth

obvoisly 67 at 2.8 is hard to replicate in s35

OK, if the 5D4 is announced in september, that's 4-and-a-half years after the 5D3 was announced. Let's see what they've got :)

It looks like 5DIV may have the pixel-shift technology, a la Pentax and Olympus, that will bump its photo resolution up to 60 MPX, a double of the nominal count on the sensor. For video, the information is less complete in terms of the external HDMI capabilities, the 4K crop, etc. The official announcement is expected either on the 25th or the 27th. Maybe the 26th. The 28th is out of the question.

Nothing about the leaked 5D4 specs surprise me. What would surprise me at this point is if it had clean HDMI output at UHD resolution. That would solve the codec and articulating screen issue in one shot for anyone willing to use an external recorder. At 24-30p it doesn't even need an HDMI 2.0 port to do that, but I doubt Canon will provide that ability seeing as the 1D X mkII doesn't even do it.

The other big question on my mind is whether or not Magic Lantern will be able to get raw 1080p out of this thing the way they can with the mkIII. How much is that higher resolution sensor going to bungle things up?

Next question is, will this be of any real value over a C100 which can be had now for $2500? Sure it shoots 4K and if you need a 4K output it's probably worth it, but if you're mastering both to HD, is there really going to be any quality bump over the C100? The C100 mkI is $500-$1000 less but also provides CLog, NDs, XLRs and the ability to use EF-S lenses, unlike the mkIv.

Was never a fan of Medium Format backs with CCD sensors. Funky cross-over colors on skin tones, brittle reproduction of hair, plus less than solid reliability. They seemed OK for product, & architectural, work but slow & funky for Fashion/Celebrity.

Even with film I was never a fan of 6x4.5 & felt it was the bastard child of Medium Format. Added hassle with nothing special to it's look. Mostly used them when shooting some fashion catalogs as the aspect ratio worked well for single-page verticals, but given the option I'd prefer 6x7 for these gigs.

As I mentioned the bigger the difference in format the more the look becomes apparent so I'm not surprised you didn't note much between sub-6x4.5 & 35mm.

Why not the 28th?
I kind of threw it in for no reason but the 28th falls on a Sunday and the major announcements are rarely made on a Sunday.

And, if you have Canon glass, you might consider the new Kipon EF to FE smart adapters that do pretty well in auto focus. Or wait for C100III/C200.

BTW, if the 4K is not oversampled, then the 8.8 out of 30 MPX sensor is almost an MFT type of a crop. In which case, one might as well buy GH5 (whenever it comes out).

I a lot of unknowns. The 5D will probably offer 1080p60 and maybe 120 which the C100 does not have. The Magic Lantern question is interesting. After 4 years of development the processing and throughput will be much better. Makes you think if ML could work they might be able to get some better framerates like 60p and possibly a 4k feed. If the camera had CFast it would really be interesting.

I was surprised to see a 16-35 III mentioned. I thought that lens was updated and done for a while. Overall, I will be surprised if I am surprised with the Canon release. They are so intent on crippling that I have lost faith. But I will say that the 1DXII is quite a spec tour de force with 4kp60 and a lot of bitrate. Maybe, just maybe they are seeing some reasoning to compete with video specs in the DSLR world.
