C200: C200 Firmware Update Spring 2018

Oh, c'mon.. Good for you, but is it so hard to understand that they are people who don't want to shoot raw?

When I was shooting with a C300 at 50mbps I shot about 10TB/year. Now on the 150mbps I'm up to 30TB/year. If I shot RAW I'd be at a Petabyte every 3 years. Does that answer your question?

I get the sense that many posters here don't actually shoot that much footage. Or at least don't need to maintain access to their footage permanently like I do. Different needs - different priorities.

Did I say 10 bit? It's the lack of 422 that's the shocker. The original C300 has it. The C100 can output it. Disappointing to say the least.

So I don't get all this complaining about 4:2:2 versus 4:2:0. If I was shooting green screen I'd shoot RAW anyways to get the most control over the key. For regular footage, the difference between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 is not really noticeable. Rods and cones are not in a 4:2:2 array in our eyeballs. They're more like a 4:2:0 arrangement. Granted there are acquisition requirements for broadcasters/content channels which seem often a bit arbitrary.

I paid 16k for my C300mii, and all I want is 4k/60!! I shoot alot of television and it is always requested. I am willing to pay for an upgrade. If it's not possible, shame on you Canon because this camera could have had a much longer life, and could an iconic camera in the Cinema line for years. :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

I was actually hoping for a raw 10bit 24p option to save a little space. It kinda sucks you can't record raw at the same 10bit color it uses for 60p recording. That would make a 256gb Cfast last for an hour of raw in 24p.

Anyone find the link he is referring to?

Definitely not possible, I was told by a Canon engineer.

Sell it and get a used F5 or F55(price wise you could probably move laterally to the F5. I'm seeing them for under $10K used). If the previous owner paid for the 4K license upgrade on a 5(or buy it yourself for ~$1K), you can do 4K/60P internally and up to 180P in 1080/2K internally with no sensor windowing. My 55 is my de facto go-to cine camera, now. My 55 vs. 300 use ratio is probably at least 4:1, and I'm probably being really conservative.

I can say, for some reason, the F5/55 are the only Sonys I have shot with that I liked the color science. People tell me the FS-7 has the same imager but the FS-7 colors out of camera without grading look horrendous whereas the F5/55 don't?

Petabyte? That's just ~35 tapes.

I've done some shoots with my F55 alongside an FS-7 and I was not happy with the image straight out of the camera, either. I remember looking over at the monitor and they didn't come anywhere close to matching. I'm a stickler for cameras matching.

I even know guys that will not mix 'n match F5's with 55's. I've done multi-cams mixing them and it can be really hard to match them, sometimes, especially in-camera, and a lot of times requiring it to be done in post. And as we know, there is not always that luxury of time to do that.

So anyone else notice in the video that when he switched formats to xfavc the frame rate was remembered? I getting the impression that this firmware may in life other small-but-important quality of life tweaks like that. Anyone know when the fw will be released?

Fingers crossed. That's personally one of the things about the current firmware that annoys me the most, the automatic frame rate change when changing formats, so obnoxious. I have seen no hard date on the release, but probably around NAB so they have something to announce for the C200?

Sounds logical. Kinda weird and annoying that Canon would put out the video on their official Vimeo page, and not give a heads up that it's "coming soon".

Damn those NDA’s to hell lol

Yep, it can be frustrating. I can say that I have been under NDAs dozens of times over the past few years and posters on boards like this one are usually wildly optimistic about what the manufacturers can and will be delivering. The intro of the C200, a camera that shoots internal RAW for under $8k has been one the few true surprises that caught everyone unaware where people who were under NDA or the C200 .were probably thinking, "This is going to blow everyone's minds", which, to a point, the C200 did. It's far from a perfect camera, it's severely feature throttled because of marketing, but it's still impressive, coming from one of the most conservative companies.

I know, no Cinema RAW Light on the C700 FF?!?!?! Missed opportunity Canon. Yes, you want people shooting studio features to buy Codex but Owner Ops aren't going to do that, but they would go with Cinema RAW Light. It'll be interesting to see if the C300 MKIII/C400 ends up with Cinema RAW Light or if they just keep it on the C200. Canon's logic escapes me sometimes.
