I REALLY love the Af100, more specifically the M4/3 format, more specifically, the ability to shoot fantastic 422 (With a little help from an AJA or Ninja) footage on a camera that I can swing around on one finger like a pistol.

Please tell me that you are cooking something up on M4/3 to compete with the big Sony, RED and Arri Cams!
Those things all look big and ridiculous to me now!
Me wanna shoot full 2k 3D!
and full 2k 120fps!

And definitely more Cinematic lenses!

Warm regards.

A very happy customer!

And all this for less than $5k?????

Buy RED, ARRI, Sony and make a 3D rig or wait another couple or three years ahead.

Better than cheaper is free.

Better than good is exellent-

Another very happy and satisfied customer

Ha Ha.. nope.. I'm willing to pay the same prices as the Arri etc.
I just love the size and weight of M4/3

until I bought the Af100, I would just sit and let the DP do all the work, now I'm like a chubby kid in a donut store!

I'm also loving the 4/3 sensor. I find it very flexible looks wise - it's really easy to achieve a shallow depth of field and it's just as easy to shoot flat when you need to.

Your wish list sounds fantastic and I would definitely pay extra for it, but I really think a good ENG type of zoom lens would make this camera and format the 2/3 sensor killer. An f2 or 2.8 zoom with a decent range and a servo zoom would be like a dream come true. I'm not sure if Canon or Fujinon are up for it, but if anyone does such a lens, I'll buy it. I would happily pay 10-15 grand for it.

Very exciting times for Indy film makers!

3 years ago I had to raise a million USD to shoot a feature on ARRi and RED. It nearly bankrupted me and exhaustion me so emotionally that I had to take a break for a year afterwards.

This year, with the Panny and now an F3 I am shooting 3 features for less than 100k USD (in total).
And I have time to do a little villainfest entry :)
The difference in crew requirement is phenomenal!

The bigger the crew required, the harsher the exponential cost increase.
Just feeding a 40 man crew used to cost more than an entire film costs me now 0.o

Really excited about the future!

Yes - it would actually be disappointing (to us current owners/adopters) if it came out any sooner than that.

I'd say (hope) for an announcement a year or so from now - with availability in late 2012.

Was just dreaming about this today again.

My DP's F3 with those huge lenses looked so old-school to me today, can't wait for my Ninja to arrive to shut him up about the 422 (he also has a huge AjA strapped to the F3).

A m43 Cinetype Zoom lens would be the shizniz! Love my 14/140 but that telescoping action means Matt box move etc. uber time munching activity for a bloody aesthetic crowd pleaser!

Gonna do everything in my power to pimp the Panny to the max but still very excited about what comes next!

I'd like to see the magic math you're using here. Other than rental costs, which depending on the version of the RED you rent can be very affordable, what do you see as the major difference between shooting with a RED versus your favorite camera? You still have DP. Still have a Camera Op to pull focus. Still need grips/gaffers unless you don't care about production value. Makeup/Hair doesn't change. You still need someone to backup media files.

Sure, you need a heavier-duty tripod.

Please share the magic math???

Ablecine has already adapted a 2/3" ENG lens to the AF100.

The f3 doesn't record 4:2:2.

He uses an AJA.

We are talking about self financed guerrilla independent features here right?
Nothing magic about the math, it's simple logic:

Lets start with the gear and work our way outwards:

The Af100 sits comfortably on a Jib, Tripod or Steadycam made for DSLR's.
Grips required: 2

Bigger Cams need to sit on heavy Dollies and much larger Cranes or Jibs.

8 ton trucks required for my gear: Zero.

Everything fits into zip up bags which fit comfortably into the back of my SUV.

Most of my lighting is LED or Natural.

The DP brings one or two blonds and reds but we rarely need them.

Generator Truck, Spark, Driver and spark assistants required: Zero

The LEDpanels plug into any wall and can run very comfortable off a standard Jennie.
We have 6 car batteries with a large UPS which is on charge via a generator (if in the field) whever we yell 'cut'.
I did an entire shoot with lights, cam and the moving head thingie on the Jib with one tank of fuel...

Focus puller? DIT? Those are really awesome luxuries but not so much required once you figure out the cool little features that come standard on the Panny.

On bigger (commissioned) projects, I still use those guys, as well as Gaffers etc. but on a micro budget Indy feature: DP and an assistant do a great job.

Grips: Jib and tracks come with an operating manual. A teenager with 5th grade could put it together and operate it. Nothing big or complicated here.
Grips trucks required: None. Everything (as previously mentioned) fits into the back of my SUV.

Sound: 3 lavs, a rifle mic and a multitrack recorder. One sound guy and two assistants.

Camera and Lenses:

40 day rental on a RED or ARRi with one or two primes costs more than the outright purchase of the Af100 and a full set of m43 lenses.

Capture: Me and the DP do our own data capture at the end of each day. It's a simple case of drag and drop into an appropriately named file.

From there the dominoes fall drastically with costs - Accommodation, food, transport etc.

MUCH cheaper!

That said, if i have the cash I will still use a small army and trucks etc. to get the job done.

But I don't so I don't.

Sony currently has the ~$10k large sensor market to itself with the F3. I'm sure Panasonic is just itching to get in there ASAP with a competitive camera. Maybe an AF200 with better dynamic range and log recording to P2? I'd be surprised if they don't have a product by the next NAB.

yeah. a full hd 2 megapixel m4/3 sensor, p2 avcintra 10 bit 422 would be epic.
if they add a slog like feature then its gonna be awesome :D

Boign Boing Boing Clap Clap Clap

Yes, that's the sound of me jumping up and down excitedly at the thought of those possibilities.

The massive cup of awesome here is the 'M' in the 'm4/3' - Small, light, easy to use and ready for the Big Screen!

No more selling house and offering wife and daughters into slavery to make a movie!

How do you market your films Wilbur?

Well, locally I go straight to Pay TV and Free TV if the Cinematic distributors are not interested and internationally.. um... got lucky with one movie but it seems I'll be waiting before I see a cent there.
Still trying to figure out an easier way to get to international TV.

At this point, I am still recovering from the first big project but will have shot 3 micro budget features this year by September.
I pay for the entire movie with product placement and if i can't get a buyer I just give the rights to free TV so that my sponsors get the promised mileage.

After the first project (the biggest lesson of my life), I am taking it easy and experimenting to build a great team and work on my narrative skills under different pseudonyms (for each genre).

So to answer your question: Not as focused on marketing the films as much as figuring out how to do it right. Trial by error, just keep shooting and learning until I get the hang of it.

If one of the free TV projects gets nice reviews, it will give me the leverage to land a nice international contact or two.

So many damn sharks swimming out there with promises of grandeur - I changed my whole strategy to avoid them.

I am about to do an experiment with online marketing (See my 'Mage Hunters' teaser in the User Films section) to target a direct niche (WoW and other MMORPG players).

Will see how that does and determine my strat from there.

Hope my answer was not too much info, I tend to waffle a lot...
