Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch - GH1 FTW!!!

Hi, I uploaded your settings;
E1 Q=150

130
56
115
26
100
4

AVCHD FHD/SH= 41000000
24000000
16000000
43000000

The AVCHD works fine, but as soon as I begin to record MJPEG it states that the card cant handle it. I'm using Sandisk Class 10 32GB. As I own a mac can you please write out the settings for this new blackout-powell Native 24p patch please.

Also, how does the blackout-powell patch differ from the reliability patches I have used?
Any help would be grand! Thanks!

Hi, thanks, but the file does not open on my macbook pro. Any ideas how I can open the file link you kindly posted above?

Okay I managed to open the file using textedit, but is it okay to manually input all the data into ptools? Also, I noticed that the increment states 1, is this correct as I am on increment 5.

I just installed these blackout-powell settings and when recorded in MJPEG and I playback from camera it goes all squashed into a severe letterbox style and then get the read error message. Once again, the AVCHD seems to work fine though. Hmmmmm.......?

Ok sorry, just read your detailed explanation of this patch. So, to recap if I want the best available quality then use AVCHD in FHD mode. If I'm green screening then use MJPEG mode. My basic requirements are to make films so should I just stick with the AVCHD or should I use a different patch? Thanks!

I'm taking a shot here...but if you want to make film you may want to look at this thread:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?201093-24p-vs-30p-vs-60p-vs-60i

but really depends on the kind of film you making....my guess stick to best quality avchd because you get 24p.

truthfully i'd spend the time to try to 3 or 4 main hacks and shoot some video. then decide which YOU like best.

When working with the Blackout-Powell patch in 1080p 24 frames per second, do you have to do anything with the footage (i.e. pull down) before dropping it into a video editor for editing?

And what are the recommended exporting settings so you get the best quality video when you export?

Thanks guys for the great work. I have been using my own patch for quite some time but can never get it stable with 24p.

Unfortunately, the same happens with this patch. Under controlled conditions I recorded about 3 mins of the torture chart filling 90% of the screen and in focus. All was good until the second attempt few minutes later - after 20-30 sec the recording stopped with an error and the files produced were size 0. Very strange - nothing changed, light, camera position or settings. From that point on every single recording attempt resulted in an error and an empty file.

I reflashed the firmware with the native 24p turned off. No more problems.

One interesting observation - with the 24p turned on the file came out at about 20mbps average. Without it - 28mbps (again nothing but the firmware changed).

What software do you use for editing? by example in Premiere Pro CS5 can work native with the AVCHD codec, no need to pull down. But many editors convert the AVCHD to a regular format as Quicktime or AVI for editing.
Do you need the best export settings for what? Web, DVD, HD?

Cheers.

I have tested CS5 extensively with the auto 60i/24p pulldown, and it just is not the same quality as doing a proper pulldown or Cineform codec. It plays OK, it looks OK, but it does not, at least on my machine, render out OK. But hey, even Neoscene will do the trick. Would love to get one od those 7-14 someday!

Still better to use the patch and not transcode at all. Significant quality increase from editing native avchd files as your mp4 will fe your first encode and you can really high bitrate that, then vimeo and youtube encodes will be leagues better than going through an intermediate

type "best encode" on any search engine

HI! That's me... ok so I'm tooting my own hat JUUUUUST a tad but I am giving you the secrets.

Remember that 24p is actually 23.976 in your editing program. I highly recommend Edius 6 followed by Vegas 10 and use a combo of the two depending on what i am doing.

Latest rough cut of a music video.

This was not as fancy pants as my nice black and white shoot I had zero prep time. Basically the client had X amount of cash and bunch of models and clothes standing around for the day that he had paid for in his empty facing nyc penthouse.. So this music video was made with NO planning whatsoever.... literally just made it up on the spot and came up with this fall asleep fantasy idea... it's kind of a prince get off meets moulin rouge orgy look. It's amazing what one can do with a

a> couple cheap blink multi colored lights
b> a smoke machine
c> colored gels and

Please don't pay attention to the video after 4 or so minutes I rendered the whole thing out but really I only got up to about 4 and a half minutes the last few minutes are a mess... then end will also loop back to where she is seeing herself mixing the video on the screen so it's a loop in a loop dream sort of thing.

It's currently processing the 1080p version so give it some time if it's still up in 720p. Vimeo is annoying with that I wish they would just let you set that you want ALL your videos in 1080p automatically.

Full HD, 1920 1080p... 24p.... really low light except for the black and white outdoor tracking shot which I am particularly fond of.. best shot in the vid with amazing deatail

I'm new to this hacking. I try and take photos with the shutter, but it ends up activating the video. What dials do you use for everyday video and photos?

'everyday' photo and videos is a very wide term..the gh1 seems a bit much to be used as a point and shoot. just leave it in automatic when you have no clue.. but for the best pictures of course you have to learn what all the different ways of shooting are and what they do... I recommend one of the dummies or idiots guide books to photography for understanding the different modes and shutter, aperture, lenses ect... there are also some great primers on the net.

Thank you for the reply Blackout. When I put it on iA mode, and attempt to take a picture, it will record video. Many other dial modes will just record video, and not take photos. A few dial modes will take a photo when I press the shutter, though. Do you know why this is?

Can anyone give me a quick summary of why and what too choose avchd vs mjpeg for?
that would be great. :) Thanks

MJPEG is good if you need 30 fps or 4:2:2 color subsampling (which is useful for chroma keying). Downsides are recording time limits (with this patch my camera stops at 5-7 mins depending on the subject) and lower resolution than AVCHD.

AVCHD is good if you don't need 4:2:2 (its 4:2:0 still looks great) and if you need to do slowmo (60 fps). There is no recording time limit, until you fill your memory card. In my opinion, and seemingly in many others' opinions, AVCHD is a better all-around choice, unless you need one of the MJPEG advantages above.

I've installed the Blackout-Powell patch on my GH1. So to clarify, if I choose rec mode AVCHD and FHD, does that mean camera is now shooting in 25fps?
