Jean-Paul Bankes-Mercer - New music reel ver.5.0

J.P.

You, my friend, always shoot from the hip, and seldom miss. The reel is looking mighty nice, but I don’t it is quite there yet…wherever “there” happens to fall on the creative google map. Don’t get me wrong, the individual video clips themselves (with one exception, see below) are good representatives of that smart stylized look of yours that I dig the most. It is the overall “flow” of the reel itself that seems to be dammed up.

If you’ll allow me…some notes:

1. INTRO – Looks sharp, sets the pace (or what should be the pace) of the whole shebang

2. REVEREND & THE MAKERS – Hands down the weakest link. Not the music so much (though it is far from stellar); but the video clip seems uninspired and unworthy of the J-PB-M name. This is especially true when compared to the other segments which increasingly snowball into awesomeness. I would say lose this one altogether.

3. DANIEL TSE - I would bump this one up to the lead spot (after the intro). The Robert Palmer vibe works, but I would maybe break up the length by showing part of it later.

4. THE SHORTWAVE SET – Nice change of pace, but could you cut to something else from that project under the dialogue?

5. THE RANDOMS – Love it. This definitely should be the centerpiece for the reel. The placement, length, everything is spot on. Want to change it? Piss off, leave it alone.

6. JIM NOIR – You defiantly saved the best for last. Holy shi*, are you kidding me with this?! poo pooing brilliant concept, my man. I get a Strawberry Fields feel from it…if the Strawberry Fields Forever video had BEEN SHOT BY TIM BURTON that is!! That video is going to be BIG.

7. SIGN-OFF – Again, like the intro, nice strong burst past the pacing finish line

I don’t have a lot of hard suggestions per se (other than #2 above); but I would say try something different. A shorter edit? A tighter edit? I dunno. This is one of those trial-by-fire “I’ll know it when I see it” things. Just play around a bit more, and this baby will be flowing.

Hope that helps.

:beer:Cheers, pal

Callaghan,

I would expect nothing less than the truth, thanks. My last reel was a montage of shots and was rightly pointed out as - more of a D.P.'s reel, so I felt I had to go with the clip selection concept.

Reverend and the Makers are massive at the moment over here in the U.K. so thats why I lead with it. I'm going to bump the Daniel TSE video as per your suggestion.

I will go back and look back at the Short Wave Set, I put it in to show that I also like shooting the backstage band docs, are you suggesting putting in a bit of their set before?

The Randoms are a classy act, I'm really into their music. Top bunch of guys too, I'll pass on your comments.

Jim Noir - What can I say? Such a great act to come out of Manchester.

Thanks for your kindest of words.

Much love.

J.P.

Do you have something else for Reverend and the Makers then? What I'm saying is that a narrative (on some level) is evident in all the clips except for this bad boy, which JUST looks like concert footage.

As far as the THE SHORTWAVE SET, yeah whatever footy you have. It's not bad as is, but if you have another shot(s) to insert...something else even better might surface. He mentions L.A. so maybe plug in an L.A. shot if you have one, or backstage coverage if not.

Love the reel J.P. ... Amazing stuff that just adds to the esteem that I hold you in. Really nice work. The thing I'm most impressed with is the diversity of both concept and execution in these pieces. I'd never in a million years peg these as coming from one shop. Bravo and Kudos!!!

Absolutely wonderful, sir! I really like all of the different looks you create through interesting and diverse lighting schemes. Very professional.

Callaghan,

I've changed the Reverend song, could get it to work with Daniel TSE first, also added some shortwave live.

Thanks for the input.

J.P.

That's it!!!
It's Poyfect,
you talented bastid, ya...
Cheers

Hey ~ Long time JeanPaul

I love this reel; that Key of C video was so rad; I remember that from way back.

Hope you are well; I haven't cut back on the booze.

Ha ha

The problem we all have is figuring out how to toast each other without spilling all over the screen (I hate when that happens:beer: aw ****...see!)
