I hear people talk about 'barry's book' which is supposed to come free with the cam for USA customers (?), is anything known about this book for poeple from the rest of the world? I'd love to find out more about this cam's custom settings and possible quirks (zoom/focus matters) without having to experiment with all possible settings myself. that would take days. and the standard manual is hardly helpful.

greetings,

david

Ditto, the book did not come with my AG AC-160 in Canada. I bought it on e-Bay from the UK. Worth every penny I paid for it.

I had some difficulty getting the AC130/160 book in the UK. I could only find two online suppliers, and they wanted unreasonable shipping costs. So I bought it directly from Amazon.com today, it was about $102. Eeek! (But worth every cent...)

I'd love it to be available as an eBook (I prefer to read things like this on the iPad).

an e-book would be perfect. if so many people want it (looking at the replies it seems i'm not alone..), why not make it available globally..?

I'm in the US, just purchased the AC90. Barry's Book was not included.
If you bought it from an authorized dealer, it absolutely should have been. If you bought it gray-market, then no, it won't be in the box. And, actually, the presence of the book is a pretty telling sign as to whether you have a legit US product, or gray market.

It is included in every USA official unit. It is not included in any other territory's box.

If I could find a legitimate, secure way to offer an e-book that wouldn't be instantly pirated, I would be very interested in doing so. I've looked into this, and the industry seems a bit goofy right now -- you either get something that's completely unprotected, like an ePub, or you get something protectable but won't work on Macs, or other nincompoopery. And then the stores that sell e-books absolutely ream the seller to the point where it's not really all that worth it to sell through them. When I've looked into the Kindle, iBooks, and Amazon publishing stores, they offer ridiculous rates and take enormous fees and can even dictate to you what your selling price is.

If someone can point me towards the absolute utopia of e-publishing, I'll gladly look at it. Especially because our postal system just raised the price of shipping internationally by 50%(!)

As for international distribution of the AC90 Book -- I have the pocket-size versions now, and will ship some to Amazon. They will be at a reduced price as compared to my normal full-sized books, but understand that 100% of the content is in there. We used a smaller size of paper, we shrunk down the font, we scaled the pictures to be smaller, and we shrunk the margins down so that we could get the book small enough to fit in the AC90 box, but the one thing I didn't do is cut any of the content. It's all there. It's 100% as good as all the rest of my books, it's just pocket-sized.

Should be on Amazon.com within a week or so. I will also attempt to get some in stock with my European distributor. Thanks for all the interest!

Sorry, don't want to hijack the thread, but Barry, you mentioned that depending on how good the GH3 is, and how big-selling, you might do a book on it. As I'm sure you know, there would be many purchasers (including me!) should you decide to do it. Have you gotten any firmer in your outlook on a GH3 book yes/no/maybe? Thanks, and sorry again about the hijack.

It is a most strange incongruity that Panasonic users in the USA get Barry's excellent books for free, while in the rest of the world, not only does one have to pay, but the books are so nearly impossible to locate. Perhaps Panasonic USA should try to convince the corporate headquarters to adopt Barry's books world-wide, and produce translations in other languages.

The current inequality gives the appearance that Panasonic USA cares more about their customers, than Panasonic's other marketing units around the world do.

Don't apologize for your question. It is a good one. I, and I am confident many others, would also be most interested in hearing if Barry made a decision about writing a book for the GH3

Panasonic USA buys them off me, in bulk, and includes them as a gift to the consumer. They feel that they're of great value in helping the consumer understand and use their new camera to the best of their ability.

Occasionally other territories have bought books from me for promotions, including NZ and Germany and Singapore, but in general, Panasonic USA is the only territory that is offering it on a continuous basis.

As for being impossible to locate elsewhere, that shouldn't be the case; Amazon.com will ship to nearly any country in the world, and Holdan distributes them throughout Europe, so they should be quite accessible.

I am currently pursuing the viability of language translations.

I am certain that the other territories certainly care about their customers as much. Just recognize, please, that there are always inequalities when dealing with differing countries, usually in terms of price and exchange rates. We have a thread running right now where someone's pointing out that it's cheaper to fly from Australia to the USA, than it is to buy an Adobe product in Australia. And we frequently see people in Europe pointing out that it's cheaper to fly to New York, pick up a product at B&H, and fly back, than it would be to buy that product in their home country(!) Rules, regulations, taxes, import duties, sales office overhead, and currency exchange rates all conspire together to create inequality in the marketplace.

On top of that, though, it should be pointed out that Jan Crittenden Livingston has been one of the most dedicated, accessible, customer-oriented product managers from not only Panasonic, but any company. To this day I don't know of a JVC or Canon or Sony product manager that publishes their email and phone number and interacts with the customers on various forums on a daily basis (although, in the new job, she's on here less frequently, but still)... so Jan is clearly oriented towards the end customer more than most any other product manager from any company that I've ever met -- and Jan tried out many bundling promotions; Panasonic cameras used to include Magic Bullet Looks, and ... something else, I don't remember what ... and then they tried the books and have been very happy with the response they've gotten from it.

Hey, I'm with you, I wish they were a standard in every camera worldwide :) but as it is, sometimes someone takes a chance, sometimes someone tries something new, and Jan was that person in this case, and that's how we got into the situation we're in now, where all the AVCCAM and handheld P2 camcorders have books included with them.

In that case Barry, the solution to this problem is simply: Panasonic simply needs to hire more managers like Jan Crittenden Livingston! Problem solved! :D

OldCorpse and I are still wondering, though, if there is any possibility that you are still considering writing a book on the GH3.

You are right, tried to register it and it's a Canadian Version... I bought it through Amazon fulfilled by "Electronics Basket" . Amazon said it will be picked up Monday. I'll purchase the next one from B&H.

Barry,

When are you going to make the "normal size" book officially available, and especially to Holdan for us in Europe? It would help us to know, I for one would like to order the book soon but unless I have an idea of if/when the bigger size is available I am stuck.

The problem is it costs a tremendous amount of money to run even a small quantity of books off. It may end up being economically not viable to run a small run of books in a larger size; I may have to stick with the smaller size for this particular camera. I'm waiting on Holdan to tell me what they think would work best in their territories.

Well if it was an authorized US unit, there would be a mail-in card to mail-in for the book. Gray Market product does not qualify for a free book.

Best,

Jan

The AC90 was purchased from Amazon but fulfilled by another vendor. I didn't think Amazon worked with grey market vendors. When I couldn't register it i discovered it was a Canadian version. I immediately requested a product return. It wasn't even that great of a price that I would suspect it was grey market. I will try B&H once I get my money credited although B&H does not mention Barry's book in what's included in the box. I will call them to make sure it is a USA version. Very disappointed, really wanted to shoot with it this weekend.

Amazon sells product themselves, and also serves as a portal for other vendors. Some of those vendors are gray marketers.

B&H is an authorized dealer. You should most definitely find the book in the box you get from them.
