For those interested in what's happening with the Atomos Ninja ( www.atomos.com ), Ed Lee at Cinema5D was finally able to get in touch with Jeromy Young, head of Atomos on Feb. 1:

OK so brief update.
I finally got hold of Jeremy and he says he's begun shipping to distributors in Euroope, Japan and USA.
All the Ninjas are here in Hong Kong right now preparing to ship. But because of the LUnar New Year holiday there's been a slight delay... man, can't believe they're all in one place and possibly quite near me too..
As for testing, he says he'll bring one over next time he's in HK possibly next week, or else he's going to send me one directly.

Is there a cheap converter from components to HDMI?

I saw some dumb adapters, but not sure of the signal quality and if they work with the Ninja.

If so, it could replace my firestore.

Oh, and balanced audio inputs would be mandatory.

What camera would you be using the Ninja with? I don't think there would be any nice portable on camera solution to convert the analog component signal to HDMI.

If it works as advertised, it would at least eliminate the log & transfer to Pro-Rez step. That alone would make it worth it. Getting 4:2:2 would improve keying. I also have a Canon HV20 which sends 1920x1080 full raster out to the Ninja! Af100 + HV20 at 1920x1080 4:2:2, nice combo.

There are super cheap $50 solutions for this. A lot of people need to convert older HD home theater devices to HDMI for use in there home theater systems. Look on Amazon.

I don't know if there's any "rolling" protocol in HDMI. In HD-SDI, there's a flag that they set that lets an external recorder know that the record button was hit; I used that with the HPG20. And in the Nano, it can sense when timecode starts moving, in order to trigger rolling. But HDMI doesn't have timecode at all, it's just not part of what HDMI does, so it can't do that. And, like I said, I don't know if there's any sort of flag or protocol that can be sent to tell an external HDMI recorder to start rolling. The Nano doesn't do that.

In theory it should be possible, easy even. My relatively simple TV knows when it's being fed a signal and when it's not, so a simple signal/no-signal HDMI trigger built into these recorders shouldn't be a problem... theoretically.

The signal is always there though. HDMI doesn't get turned on when you start rolling, it's always there whether you're rolling or not...

Something must change when audio/video starts being pumped through, otherwise my Samsung TV wouldn't go from a no-signal state to displaying an image. Some TVs even turn on when they detect a signal or at least a signal change (a friend's SONY, for example). Can this be done in Nano/Ninja firmware? Feasibly? No idea.

I think barry's point was that the HDMI out on the Af100 is always putting out signal when the camera is on - there is no signal change when you press record.

Ah, roger that. So the recorder would basically have to record whenever the camera was on. I can think of a few workarounds, but that'd just add to cost and complexity. TANSTAAFL :/

I await to see the first footage to come out of this device when coupled with the AF100 once it ships next week. If the Atomos Ninja is making top quality ProRes images like the claims, then the Nanoflash and maybe even Ki Pro Mini will likely drop a in price a little. I love when companies fight for our dollar :)

Hello,

The Ninja is a great price but did I read correctly that it does not support 1080-30p? Anyone know if this will be coming anytime soon?

Thanks,

Simon

who is the US distributor for the Ninja? I am surprised they are rolling out with the product. I had registered to get in line for their pre-order and never got an email or anything...classic!

It does 1080 60i and to a recorder or monitor reading the signal coming from the HDMI port 1080 60i and 1080 30p are the same.

Actually Jeromy Young talks about HDMI out in an interview he did with Urbanfoxtv back in October ( urbanfoxtv.blogspot.com/search?q=atomos ) at the 6:10 mark of the 14:28 "Ninja Pro Res Workflow" segment. His point is that some older cameras would knock out the HDMI signal when they went into record, so his suggestion for these older cameras was to not go into record on the camera itself but to go into record only on the Ninja thus bypassing these cameras highly compressed outputs.
