FloLight LED500 Light Review

How much watt in thungsten is that?

Unbelievably when I tested it recently with a light meter, it was equivalent to around a 600w fresnel or so. I've learned quite a bit about LEDs in this exercise. You can't look at the lumen output basically and let that guide you or influence your judgement. Yes their lumen output is not as good as many sources but the area where they really excel is in their concentrated light output in a beam. A metal halide or tungsten bulb may beat a bunch of LEDs if you compare in lumens per watt, but when you measure with a light meter, astonishingly the values are very good thanks to the lens and especially when you pick a good sharp beam angle in the 20 to 30 degree range, you get an instrument with a lot of throw. Now, they can't compete one for one though because its not a hard light, nor is it a completely soft light. Its a light with a good throw and a strange shadow pattern.

Richard, what will the final fixture look like? One of these, or do you hook 2 together to obtain some softlight source? With a softbox this could be kick-ass.

I should have pictures in a few more days. The light emanating area is about 10" x 10" and it really puts out more of a spot than a wide flood. This is a 20 degree beam angle LED so it will be like a spot. A 30 degree would probably be just a bit wider spot and 45 degree will be bordering on a more soft source with still some throw.

Hi Richard,
First let me say this thread is a "must read" every time I get back home from a shoot. Second I wanted to know what power options you will be building into the design. I like the idea of a built in power supply but would also like the option of powering via external battery/dc. Though I don't use belts anymore I have grown quite fond of my two Takeon battery packs that I use to power my Zylight and it would be nice to have the option to use them. Not nuts about wall warts or external transformers. just more stuff to loose on the road.
Cheers
Brian

I personally prefer 12v external supplies as it simplifies the fixture and makes for less things to go wrong as well as making it easier to fix any problems (with just a replacement power supply). It also makes substituting a battery very easy as long as you know the right pin outs on the input power connector and you are sure your batteries voltage level is not too much (or too little). I'm open to other ideas though. We're still flexible there.

Thanks for the response. What you say makes sense regarding the replacement etc. I guess if I had a favourite wall wart it would be the one with my blackberry where the prongs of the plug fold into the case when not in use but I imagine the draw of all of those LEDs will take a fair bit of current and a hefty power supply. AS for voltage level the beauty of the Takeon's is they are voltage adjustable. This is awesome for me being on the road with several 'toys" that require different voltages. I only carry my two Takeons and one charger and several adapter cables with a variety of pin configs. I can power everything but my camera with them and I suppose I could power it too if I needed to.
Can't wait 'till you get 'em out.
Brian

Well, I received the LED500 light back from prompter people today. It was the same one I sent. 4300k temperature. Not 5600k. I'd avoid these and either wait for Richards version or choose another option.

That is really sad. Too bad a small company like that can't seem to get it together. You'd think they would really be on top of this and double check a product that has been returned especially since this problem has been reported by more than one person.

I'd just ask for my money back. I'm confident that Richard's will be accurate before it is released.

LEDs are definitely a challenging science. I think I see another article coming soon in my Blog to explain all the pitfalls, misunderstandings, workarounds and even the strong points of LEDs.

Was doing some research on LED lights and found this thread -- what a great source of info this forum is! I'm interested in the Cool Lights LED product as soon as it becomes available. Any updates on price and availability date would be appreciated as they happen. Keep us posted. Thanks Richard -- great product!

We're still here working on it. I decided on a different extrusion for the LED panel's fixture to keep it as thin as possible so we're waiting on that now. We're also waiting on a stand adapter which I think is best for this model over a yoke or lollipop.

We got another panel back which is getting really close to what I want. The previous one was so damn hot it was obvious the LEDs weren't efficient enough and were being overdriven which of course would reduce their life. The new one is very cool and is only drawing 22w for 600 LEDs which is amazing in itself. We're going to change the spot angle from 15 degrees to a higher one though because while it has a lot of throw, the beam is too narrow and too much of a spot. We need something more of a happy medium between good throw but wider beam.

OK, thanks Richard. I have some interviews coming up for a documentary and could use these. The wider throw for a softer light might be better for me. Have you arrived at a price yet? And will they possibly be available by late September/early Oct? Thanks!

LED 1000 battery options?

LED 1000 battery options?

I am about to purchase this LED 1000:
http://www.prompterpeople.com/led1000.php (specs found here).
100w, 12vDC (10-15, no higher), 100-240v ac 50/60, 10amp draw

1. What battery would power this light for approx 1.5 - 3 hours? (I will be getting 3 of these lights, so will be looking for a cost effective and not too heavy solution). Most likely a single battery for each light, not 1 massive battery to power all 3.
2. Looking ideally for battery suppliers in Toronto who you could recommend. I'd like to pickup rather than ship the product.

These were recommended to me:
Motomaster Eliminator 1,200A PowerBox
http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/p...older_id=1408474396672502&bmUID=1218560950472
(A little bigger than I would hope to have it).
Bescor PRB-24 Heavy Duty 12Volt 24 Amp
http://www.markertek.com/SearchProd...rch=Bescor+PRB-24+belt+and+XLR-CP&pagesize=20
A little more expensive than hoped, figuring I would be better off getting multiple 'eliminator' style batteries such as:
Duracell Powerpack 300
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3732576&csid=_21
Though, I don't know how long the light would run for on this battery.

Advice? Anyone have a similar setup?

--- I'd love to hold off on this purchase and go with cool lights at a lower price point depending on the product feature, if there is an ETA on when these may be available... either way though, I'll need portable power!

Thanks,

Justin

I am about to purchase this LED 1000

Most here that have seen these lights from PrompterPeople or even bought them claim that they have a strange color cast and are not 5600K even after sending the units back for repair.

Would be really interested in your experience to see if they got the color right this time.

+1 I would wait if I were you..the LED-500 I got from prompter people clocked in at 4300k. When I returned it, they shipped me back the same unit.

Less than stellar.

This is Mark Ditmanson President of Prompter People/Flolight. I wanted to briefly respond to the 4300K issue Matt brought up on our LED 500.

We spot test the LED 500's for accurate 5600K color temperature and allow a +/- 5% reading. It is possible that Matt received a light with a lower temperature that did not receive the spot test. Matt emailed us a month or so ago with the issue and we offered to replace the his LED 500 with a new color tested light. As of today we have not heard back from Matt. Matt, if you see this posting the offer is still open.

I wanted to assure the forum members that we take all quality issues including color temperature seriously. I hope this helps clear things up.

Best Regards,
Mark Ditmanson

Mark,

Any update on this issue? I'm interested in both the 500 and the 1000 but need to ne certain they are going to be the same color temp.
