at the park - a BROTHERS TUTTLE film

I guess I'm in the minority. Though all of the elements were professional, and your filmmaking is good, i felt like the ADR work was WAY off base. And if that wasn't ADR work, I don't know what to say. But the voices made this seem extremely cheesy to me, and almost a parody of an afterschool special, or watching some Dutch TV show or something.

But mainly the voices. They were all just so disconnected from the action it felt almost funny.

Tell me I'm right, that IS ADR, right?

Also, one more thing, which was a problem with mine as well in retrospect, was I felt like the characters were a little too general. They could have used a lot more specificity in my eyes. It's the biggest thing I'm taking away from this fest for my own work.

This is a Dutch after school special... you didn't know that:Drogar-Dum(DBG): .

just kidding.

Just to clarify the only scenes that were ADRed were:

The beginning shot where the mom, Erica, get's a phone call but when Abbey exits shot it's back to live sound.

The last line made by Jarred after talking to the two young ladies, "Don't worry we'll find her."

Erica asking a jogger if he had scene her daughter and the jogger's response.

The confrontation/altercation, all the characters were ADRed up until the shot right before the truck then it goes back to live recording.

We wish we didn't have to do ADR but the traffic noise was just horrible in some of the shots. Most of the other shots the traffic just sounds like a hum. I even wonder if maybe we ADRed the whole movie and took all the traffic sounds out then maybe having a similar sound through out the movie would help.... not sure. If you thought the whole movie was ADRed I wonder if it was the hum that threw you. Maybe if we even just left the traffic sound in all it's glory (we actually tried to take it out by EQing it to hell and back) then maybe it would at least sound more like outdoors, but outdoors in between two freeways. Not sure, any one with sound design back ground maybe they could throw us their two cents.

Well, the thing that made it feel ADRed was that the voices seemed to NOT be integrated with the whole environment of the sound mix to me. So maybe bringing UP the ambience, or building in some more sounds...not sure. I'm going to listen on headphones.

I guess it's just me, but I listened again on really good speakers and the same thing. The voices sound SOOOO studio and so clear, it sounds like ADR to me. Maybe it's the mic? It doesn't sound like they're in a park, and normally I don't care too much about that kind of thing, but it's distracting enough here to give me a really weird tone in the film, like I said, like a tv special from another country or something... I guess I'm just being persnickity, but just trying to explain better what I meant before.

Anyway, take it for what it's worth.

Mark. It kind of bugs me too. We were smack dab in between San Diego's two biggest freeways. I EQed the living God out of everything to get some of the broadband freeway noise to not seem so evident. Before EQing it sounded like our actors standing behind a damn jet engine while they did their lines. I had to drop almost everything from like 600hz to just above 1800hz to get it to sound OK. That range of frequencies is where alot of the human voice resides so they ended up sounding kind of flat. Thanks for the feedback. I think our next short will be shot in a bomb shelter, six feet under, far from any thing with wheels and and an engine.

By the way I really dug Katrina. It was a lot of fun to watch and one of these days I will post yet another glowing review about it.

thanks for taking my weird sound comments in stride.

And thanks about Katrina, though I'll give you $2 if you can find the thread.

Hey guys I checked out Scrub. I don't know what to say really. I think your both sick. Like in a mentally ill way. I loved the blonde scabby guy. I think my favorite part was the "scrub a scrub" line. And it does remind me of some videos I've made with my brothers and friends. Maybe I'll get a chance to show you some of those sometime. I see your in post productin on a few things. Looking forward to them.

Oh by the way, "Wheels" the chair has been looking alot at the picture of Franken-D2.

I haven't reviewed the earlier posts here so undoubtedly whatever I'm going to say has been said before.

First, really great short. Interesting. Despite the fact that this is only the 5th film I've watched and there seems to be a "lost kid - blame the bum/neighbour - get taken out by a vehicle" theme happening in this fest (thank heavens you avoided including a masterbation theme in this story - hats off to you for that!) At the outset, I also wondered if you were going for a comedy piece (the litle girl going up to the bum), but the tone changed appropriately as the story progressed.

Incredible colour. Really nice. I'll search the thread to try and see what it was shot on. Good framing, but on one of the early shots it seemed like the female character lost some headroom, but that's incredibly picky.

Keen to find out how you did the aerial shot after the montage (really liked the montage, by the way). I'll try and go back in the thread and look for an explanation. Too short for my taste, but very nicely done.

Good music. Liked it.

Very good acting. The female lead was really good. Kids are tough and the little girl pulled it off. The male lead (boyfriend) was good as was the male bum character (I would have liked him dirtied up even more). I didn't buy the two girls walking under the pergola. Not sure why - I just thought - "friends of the director". Probably wrong on my part.

The sound (dialogue) was a bit "iffy" for me at times. But overall it was good.

I really enjoyed this and will go back and look at it again. Thanks very much for a very nice piece.

PERGOLA! Ah Ha, I've always wondered what that thing was called.

We shot it with an HVX and used a polo filter for 99% of the movie, which really helped the colors pop (it also "increases" the contrast which is probably helps the colors pop).

The montage was cut a little shorter because of time restraints. You can find out how we did the aerial footage HERE down toward the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm glad you liked our Saturday morning Dutch Special.

Hey Jeremy, I though you had a really good story here! At the end, it makes you go... "Wow..."

Everything had a nice look to it. I'm not a cinematographer, so I can't really give details, but everything looked quite vivid.

I thought the little girl did a great job acting and the bum did as well. Not really crazy about the woman's performance though...

Thanks Tommy, it's funny people have said the exact opposite about the acting. They thought the Bum was okay and loved the woman's. It's interesting to hear everyone's opinions. Thanks for the comments, though. I liked your performance in TTN by the way hopefully we'll get a chance to work together some day.

I just watched this again and yea, I really think the woman did a great job.
Especially that last scene when she's tearing into him while he lies motionless on the ground.

The one thing I also noticed the second or third time viewing is actually the guy driving the truck...I know our focus lies on the woman and the bum...but the truck driver looks awfully calm for having just hit someone :) (I look for these kinds of things and find them even in the biggest blockbusters)

at the park

man, what a big project. by big, I mean 'the great outdoors', a huge park between the freeways, a helicopter . . . etc. you guys really impressed me with attempting and succeeding on such a grand scale. of course most of the credit goes to Franken-D2, but you guys do good work, too!

I was gonna ask about the audio, but I'm not gonna. I read what you went through. I would have probably erased the tapes, thrown in the towel, and then shot a silent film about that bomb shelter!

seriously, this film is great, and it really could happen in a very scary six minutes of a parent's life. it would probably feel like six hours if my kid went missing for that long in a huge public place like that. especially with the creepy bum factor.

well done, BROTHERS TUTTLE.

Yes he does look rather calm doesn't he. That was our Dad. You should have seen the first take. He was laughing hysterically. We were like, "Dad. You just killed a Bum. It's not supposed to be funny." He got serious after that. I love the guy to death and he helped us out a ton but an actor he is not.

:-Laugh(DBG): Ha ha! You caught us. The crazy talented Franken-D2. Our true inspiration.

Thanks Preston. I have been meaning to hit up your thread and put in my two cents. I really dug it. Your gun shots were killer! I never bought the whole suicide thing either. I will stop by soon and throw down a review.
