F35: As good as the original Sony F35 but this cam shoots in 4K

Here's a before/after comparison:

Of course Youtube's compression softens the image a bit, that's why stills gave a good idea of the improvement in detail.

Of course this plugin works with any camera at any resolution. What makes it ideal with the F35 is that as we know the F35 is on the top of the list of sharpest 1080p cameras ever made and a camera that does not introduce any sharpening artifacts or halos. Combined with true 444 this is an ideal scenario for such temporal resolution enhancer to work well.
The Super resolution plugin does not seem to introduce much sharpening, which I like.

This is quite amazing to be honest. Apply a small NR before and the results would be very interesting.

We have been chatting with the developer asking to implement 10-bit and higher processing depths.

So what bit-depth is it currently working at then - 8-bit? Does that mean you can capture in 10-bit and run the plugin, but output is going to be limited to 8-bit only?

hmmmm... interesting interesting...

Hunter and Mac, what is your intended use of this?

On more personal/art projects, I'd never want or need 4k. I just don't want to see that much detail and actually get distracted by it. Are you guys the same?

So I guess the only argument for exploring 4k on the F35, for me, would be to sell it in a commercial sense. IE when a producer/director wants to shoot 4k on commercial projects because they want to have more options in the edit... cropping, zooming, re-fraiming etc

What can we claim this as professionally in a client situation when we're delivering the raw rushes? Would you feel comfortable telling a producer the F35 is now a 4k camera? Is a 5k RED now a 10K camera?

All very interesting :)

Yep, pretty much. Just go to their site and download the demo versions. There's a standalone that works with AVI and an After effects plugin that works well too but you get the 8bit warning when setting up the project to 16bit.

Well for example I'm working on my mauritania docummentary and I think I will run this plugin on the final online file prior to grading or stabilizing. And then I'll get a 4K output. Is it as sharp as modern 4K cameras? Nope. But it'll be better than 1080p and a good final master file.
I would also do it in a short or a feature.

I upscaled my F3 in the past.. IMO it looks fine.

Maybe the question/observation is that our eyes typically don't really need 4k, I don't remember Skyfall looking soft.

We are however clearly able to not enjoy compression artefacts and sub 1080 resolution. I do remember my 5d2 looking soft.

I just watched the screening of a documentary that I shot on a C300 as a 4k projection on a theater screen and wished I had done the upscaling myself and given them a 4k dcp instead.

If you're caching the video stream then quite surely you can still do temporal analysis - albeit you need some serious processing. Maybe cost prohibitive to a point.

As for Convergent Design, Mitch's post about upscaling was pretty clear. I never read what seemed like so much hatred towards even the notion of upscaling with their devices along with expressions about reputations being damaged, etc.. I don't think CD will ever do this. SJX gives good reasons as for why as well...

We don't hate upscaling; it is simply inappropriate for our product.

We we are not worried how the Sonys and Canons of the world would feel about an Odyssey upscaling, although I'm sure they'd look at us askance. We have clients who work with Discovery, Amazon, Netflix and many others. These companies need to be able to trust what comes out of our product. If they spec 4K/UHD origination for their product, then we don't ever want them to question the use of an Odyssey. The last thing we need is to get banned from use from a network or distributor. That would really hurt the guys who use the Odyssey with a camera that is outputting a 4K/UHD signal.

Y'all can uprez in post to your heart's content. I'm sure that you can find other paths to do so. But it is not going to happen internally on an Odyssey7Q+. It is not in our better interest to do so.

Hi Mitch!
Now that you're around here... the CD website seems down and I cannot submit a ticket.
I got a few shots like this when recording 4K from an a7rII. Do you think they can be fixed?

Nothing is ever going to be as exciting as the original "guess the camera thread". I think we all wanted that feeling again.

Youtube 1080p looks worse than original f35 1080p, being able to upscale to 4k for web content alone is a good reason because it can get closer to what we see from camera.

Yup.

This software does what it claims - no doubt about that.

Big sales ahead of them when they increase the bit-depth.

I sense a group buy. Maybe that will entice them to develop 10 and 12 bit versions.

MacGregor/Hunter - any word if they will do OSX version? I'd really like to keep it in ProRes land (main reason I am using MAC in addition to PC these days)

Put my name down for a copy it they can do 10/12 bit and OSX.

Ive asked him for 10-bit and higher processing and pro codec support first and mentioned OpenFX support. OSX would be great too- ill ask- but Mac and I are PC snobs ; )

"Current version of Infognition SuperResolution plugin was tested in After Effects CS5 and CC2015 as well as Premier Pro CC2015, and should work in other Win64 versions of After Effects and Premiere Pro."

OFX into Resolve would probably make this guy a fortune. That's the first thing I thought, and would buy in a heartbeat. Please push for OFX/Resolve support and OSX.

Great sleuthing you two gents, donuts on me! Or, Chicken Wings.

I think DaVinci Resolve (OFX) would be too slow because of insane 64-bit floating point math behind the scenes - not to mention crashy. (Unless you guys are talking about OFX for Sony Vegas?!)

Yeah I'm PC snob too first and foremost, but mac is good for making ProRes files and a few other things

What can I say I go both ways man.

Here's what I recommend as far as plugins and OS / program combinations:

After Effects/Premiere Pro | Windows/MAC
DaVinci Resolve (OFX) | Windows/MAC
Sony Vegas | Windows
FCP | MAC

This upscale is also interesting from the point of view of post stabilization.
I'd rather eat into a 4k frame than a 1080 one.
I am very curious how motion renders with it though. One of the chief issues in the past.

I lost no time to installing the trial version of SuperResolution to see how well it is but I can't find the effect option on Win64 AE CS6 or PP CS6.

Will you tell me how to use?
