Aputure Light Storm LS 1s Review

" ...for $600 this might be the best quality light so far."

Curious if anyone knows where this light is selling for $600?

I really like the review Erik, thank you. One question while the tight interview shot of you looks very
nicely lit, why not show a behind the scene's viewpoint to see how close the light needed to be or a view combing daylight to see how well the two pared?

thanks, craig

Check out the blog post. That should help. I don't have BTS because it's just me shooting me at my home. Need a little privacy :-D

Largely on the strength of Erik's review, I ordered and just received an LS-1S daylight spot. First impressions are excellent -- it was very well packaged, the materials choice seems good and strong, the heft of it inspires confidence, it has solid professional cables and connectors, and did I say, OMG, does it throw out a lot of light! So far, I've only used it to embarrass myself by shining a light on all the dust bunnies in the far corners of my bedroom/office -- no photos with it yet, in other words -- but it is running cool and looks great. I also have two of the Amaran 672's -- one spot, one flood -- which can all be controlled from the same remote and together should make a nice little interview kit.

I'm looking for a case that will hold all three of them, also.

More as I get some real experience with it.

Curiosity - How feasible would it be to use the light storm for a "book light'' technique - where you would shoot the LED in a bounce which would then go through a diffuser - Can the LED be controlled enough for that or its too uncontrollable to bounce?

The spot version produces a reasonably well controlled beam that would keep the reflector modest in size for the book light technique. But the total light output would probably only allow you to do a rather small setup, maybe one person in closeup, or some tabletop product shots.

Check out the Airbox. Inexpensive and effective accessory.

I currently have an airbox with a dracast 500 panel - i have so-so impressed with the result - it does help but considering diffusion is size of the light source vs the subject, a softbox hardly expands the size of the source - it mainly dims it. I have yet to see a really solid way to diffuse LED to create a glamour look - it is mainly useful when you want a harsher, contrasty look. Maybe its the nature of LED i guess.

Maybe you aren't really well versed on diffusing light sources?

Here's your cheapest solution a 5 in 1 reflector and a c-clamp with a spring clip on a light stand.

Instantly beautifully diffused light.

This works PERFECTLY.

I have a few of these 5-in-1s and they really are pretty decent tools.
When you take all the zip-on reflector fabric off you are left with a very nice sized diffusor.
Use a clip or two like this to secure it on a light stand and shoot ANY light through it.

Seriously. Get this. Shine your LED panel through it. Be happy.

Thanks a lot for the info - will give it a shot.
