Aputure Light Storm LS 1s Review

Thanks, for the advice. I was planning on using the 528 as fill and the 672 as a key. Do you have any preference for the spot or wide?.. That's an awesome price for the 672!

I just got the wide and works good as a key with an umbrella. Dont know how the spot is yet ill be getting that one next. I would assume the spot will be brighter if you want just the talent lit bright but if you want the background illuminated as well a little bit the flood/wide will be better. Hopefully I can compare them within a month and then eventually get a light storm as my main light and use the 2 672s as fill/head light

Thanks, most of my corporate stuff is a 4 light set-up (key, fill, back and a large source to bring up the overall) so I was thinking two 672 (one spot and one flood) and two 528 units (one spot and one flood)...

Sounds like this will do the trick. Not sure how hard the spot light will be but i do a similar 3 point light kit to this and then add a tungsten with a blue gel to get patterns on the wall behind the person whether its a thin line or fake blinds. Quick example with the panasonic gh3 and my 3 lights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHkaatzZeBU

Yup, your example is basically what I do for my corporate clients (I'm sure it's similar to what we all do) Was this done with the Aputure lights?

Ordered the Aputure LS1 which should arrive end of week. Can't wait to run this thing through its paces. I was originally looking at the Astra so it will be interesting to see how the LS1 would compare. I really love the form factor of the LS1 over the Astra but I'm sure the Astra will be brighter but also twice the price. If I get a chance to use it on some shoots next week I'll give some feedback.

Thanks, Erik. What is the incandescent equivalent (Watts) of the 1/2 light?

I dont have that one to test.

I'm writing my review now and I can share that at 100% output setting from 6 feet away I get a 440/480 FC reading.

An ARRI 650 at medium spot/flood gets about 290 FC at 6.1 feet. This comes from ARRI since I dont have the light here to test but it's great tool to use.

Not bad at all as far as output. More on battery life in the review. I like shooting it through the Matthews Road Rags. Note that the iphone is at 2 min not 2 hrs.

The 95Wh battery lasts for about an hour at 100%

I'll hopefully get my LS1 in a day or two. I'm hoping to use it through diffusion or bounced. Can't wait to read your findings on colour as I do my own testing before hitting the field.

The color is really spot on for the daylight version. Set the camera to 5500K and you are solid. I dont need any correction gels with the LS. Like that!

I know this is the LS thread, but seems like many here have the 672.

Wondering how do you join two 672s together (as they say you can) onto one stand? Is the hardware included?

As for the LS, I imagine most have found that the smaller LS is rated 500w tungsten equivalent.

My 672 Kit was just delivered - no hardware to join units together is included, and the manual doesn't cover how to do it. There are 1/4 threads on each side, so that's a possibility, although could be a bit awkward to implement and unstable unless one was mounted above the other. Would need to play around with that. Seem to remember reading somewhere that there are clips to join them, but that may have been for the smaller lights.

I shot with the Aputure LS1 yesterday as a key through diffusion and I was very impressed. Build quality is great and this is probably one of the best LED panels I have used. Colour looked great mixed with daylight. I now want to get another LS1 (bi colour) and a LS 1/2 to make a very compact durable light kit.

The remote control is one feature I think will be really handy if I get a few of these. It is handy to be able to pop it on/off and adjust ratios while looking at the monitor. Especially the one man band jobs. I won't miss running over to bring the light down to adjust.

Thanks tflak, mine just arrived, too. I know I read somewhere that two 672s could be combined, just don't know how (it's not obvious, eh?).
By combining them on one stand, I want to have my cake and eat it, too (ala your fiancée and her cake- congrats if you're engaged, if it's just a story/metaphor, well done!). :)

In the interest of not hijacking a thread about the LS 1s light — I was originally more interested in that light than in the 672. The LS higher output and better build quality really appealed to me. However, in my final decision making, had to factor in that (although normally having a strong preference for quality gear) I actually seldom use lights — preferring available light whenever possible, and shooting mainly wildlife — with only the occasional interview. So getting three 672 lights for basically the price of one LS was pretty tempting. Especially after seeing many reviews claiming these lights are adequate for interview lighting. Plus they have most of the features I liked about the LS series: primarily the remote control, dimmable with high CRI rating, and non-flickering.

So far, am pretty satisfied with the potential of the 672 kit. I got the 2 S and 1 W kit. Was pleasantly surprised at how bright they are. But haven't had a chance to use them with umbrellas or soft boxes yet. The remote control features are well-implemented and work smoothly. Build quality seems adequate for something that won't get a lot of hard use. Same goes for the included case. Time will tell.

And no, I'm not engaged... just a story/metaphor... glad you liked it!

My LS1/2 arrived today, it is a bright little bugger with wide scatter. It's definitely better quality than most led panels I have met with so far. One small, tiny issue I have is that the machining on the cross hole for the mounting pin seems a bit off, so If I want to mount the light with the bracket horizontally, it actually isn't straight, the led panel ends up being tilted sideways about 5 degrees. Will check on another stand though, this stand isn't the best.

I am beginning to think the throw might be too wide for some purposes, maybe its time to make a homemade eggcrate for it.
