A7s sample footage

^ cyork, resistance (a7S) is futile. I want one. Waiting to see how the Shogun and UHD 4K ProRes (HQ) plays out with the camera. I really want the Shogun to have a live view 2x anamorphic de-squeeze setting option, just to the monitor. Asked Atomos, not expecting it at time of release, perhaps may never come. Philip Bloom's 7GB original downloadable Vimeo file (edited) was sourced from the BM 4K recorder at ProRes (HQ) spec, and a7S was fine for my intended use. I peep the pixels, however, perhaps not as much as others with more experience and familiar with Sony cams. A lot of ducks lining up. Nice frames above.

Cyork, your Resolve grades come through very nicely as well - good job!

Regarding the live streaming option (or whatever it's called) via the iThing app, if it's "only" for wireless playback, that's still a plus, but live streaming while recording - even with a delay - would be a killer feature.
What makes me lean toward the A7s apart from its obvious image qualities, is the fact that the onboard EVF and screen seem good enough to shoot without any external EVF. This and wireless monitoring would really help keep a shooting setup clean and minimal.

You can set up an ad-hoc wifi network between your phone and the camera and then use an app on the phone (i've been using iPhone) to monitor the live view and start/stop or change exposure compensation. It works both when taking a still and starting/stopping a movie record.

Very cool feature, will be great to rig it in places and be able to start stop wirelessly.

cheers

One detail to add: I could be missing something but from what I can tell, from goofing around with it a bit this morning, the picture profiles are not available when using the wireless remote app. However, you do still have access to the creative looks, like Standard, Neutral, Portrait, etc.

By the way, for me the lag to the phone image is about one second.

You're right, how annoying is that. This is the embedded smart remote? I think there's another downloadable smart app - perhaps there's different functionality in that

Nope - seems that the full smart remote, whilst giving a lot more options, won't do picture profiles.

That's really annoying!

^ mmm... I'm not sure about that one... I would need to see more tests, but with those crop samples I would say that the scaler is doing a pretty bad job and the extra sharpness you get is actually aliasing/moire (i.e. this is false detail).

IMO that's exactly what it is. Scaling is pretty bad.

If I can actually get the HDMI port to put a signal out, I can record 4K to my new tower. Decklink Studio 4K is going into a slot today.

Thanks! Here's a few more plus a couple "round two" grades done in Resolve this time around. View attachment 88744 View attachment 88739View attachment 88740View attachment 88741View attachment 88742View attachment 88743

Here's my hunch:

- SLog2 is completely fine, just don't use S-Gamut. Switch to Cine or Still
- Cine4 + Cine in a custom profile makes a good match
- Better figure out the black gamma + level handshake , massive effect on how this camera puts values down to the card.
- + Saturation, -3ish Detail, Dig into Color Depth menu, White Balance three custom profiles as soon as possible.
- Film Convert or ImpulZ luts will likely rule this thing. It's so freaking sensitive to light that it's picking up reflections of colors I'm not even seeing with my own eyes. Bad, Good? I dunno, but FC does a great job of muting that.

That's like a day 1'n'a'1/2 summary.

Hey Kholi what's your verdict? Made a decision to buy one yet? I'm to-ing and fro-ing. Already have BMCC and 5d, but thinking of adding this to the kit, but also love the DNGs I downloaded from you with the BMPC!

How are you finding rolling shutter/jello? Was any of this handheld?

Oh, it's there but I didn't expect you be shooting any kind of decent handheld with a camera like this. I've never been a fan of dslr handheld stuff unless you put some weight on it, cage and handle. I will say that I shoot with my body and not my wrists so I don't get as much RS and jello in my shots unless I'm just screwing around with it. MMV

From James Miller : "Camera set to Zero sharpness. Not -7 ( think -3 would be better as its a bit sharp)"
Might be the reason for the aliasing... anyway this is pretty exciting to have so many people trying to tweak this camera ;)

From what I saw of the native files that James provided in that test, I'd pass. Aliasing everywhere....step backwards it would seem.

Actually, I do have a verdict...

I think it's a pretty unique offering from Sony, the large sensor amuses me to no end and I want that. The camera doesn't love lowlight, it needs lowlight in my opinion. Like, it's the exact opposite of how other cameras need light, this thing doesn't want to deal with a lot of it. Strancali sent me some footage from his very first five minutes out that I think, along with Roman's horror short footage, represents where this camera is headed. If I were shooting a horror on a thin budget, I couldn't imagine any other camera that would get the job done so effectively.

There should be a few around town to use when the time comes, I was definitely really ready to get one as well because it looks very promising, I'm going to pass.

It is really great, though, and unique is what we all really need, just choices.

Will be out tomorrow seeing if I can get something more palatable. Shot like TWO things randomly that actually looked right with an adjusted PP, seeing if that'll turn up something good.

There'll be a LLlLllLlot of projects shot with the thing for sure.

Well it should be able to handle a nuclear winter ok then :). It's about bloody time you got one! Mine's still at least a week away... grrr. I'm hoping to totally ditch the MK3 raw for this thing but I'll have to be more on the ball with white balance and exposure (just like the good old H.264 days). I've got a colormeter 2, and with the onboard histogram it shouldn't be a big drama. Just need to nail the exposure sweet spot. By the time mine arrives I should be good to go thx to the groundwork done by peeps here. I'm prepping to shoot a crowdfunding trailer for GAMMA in a few weeks, shooting it all in an abandoned rail tunnel.

Luckily I'm a 2 hr train ride from Hong Kong - fully licensed 'AP2' (switchable) for 2.2k USD. C'mon battery charge up already!

SLOG2 with some FC. I think I actually prefer to start with S Gamut. The colors seem more balanced to begin with. (I can't seem to upload anything here that doesn't get compressed to hell and back) outdoor slog2 graded 2 copy.jpgoutdoor slog2 graded 4 copy.jpgtoons slog2 graded 3 copy.jpg
