Still adjusting.

Added contrast, slight tweak to adjust for my custom WB. Need to tweak Color Depth and Custom WB one more time. And then it'll just be contrast/LOG panel.

Actually, I do have a verdict...

I think it's a pretty unique offering from Sony, the large sensor amuses me to no end and I want that. The camera doesn't love lowlight, it needs lowlight in my opinion. Like, it's the exact opposite of how other cameras need light, this thing doesn't want to deal with a lot of it. Strancali sent me some footage from his very first five minutes out that I think, along with Roman's horror short footage, represents where this camera is headed. If I were shooting a horror on a thin budget, I couldn't imagine any other camera that would get the job done so effectively.

There should be a few around town to use when the time comes, I was definitely really ready to get one as well because it looks very promising, I'm going to pass.

It is really great, though, and unique is what we all really need, just choices.

Will be out tomorrow seeing if I can get something more palatable. Shot like TWO things randomly that actually looked right with an adjusted PP, seeing if that'll turn up something good.

There'll be a LLlLllLlot of projects shot with the thing for sure.

I love eating my words, especially when it comes to cameras. It means that things get better...

Posting footage after a screening.

You're about to sell a lot of a7s for sony lol

Lol, I'm just glad to see you digging in, man. Love the color of that top frame grab. I think the level of expectation around this camera created a lot of interest in finding it's faults. Now we gotta see where it delivers. Can't wait to get our and film a featurette on somebody/someplace with this thing. Might hit Grafitti Park here in Austin. Tons of color and the art will look great for a short piece.

Finally got a chance to mess around with the footage that Roman posted and do two quick grades. Roman, thanks for making the footage available for download.

Hate to say it but Roman's first round of footage was really hard to grade for some reason. Not sure it was an ND pushed too hard or what but it there wasn't much data there to move around.

I had a seriously doofy moment with the zebras. It probably says in the manual that you just shouldn't bother with them shooting slog2.

They show up way before the slog actually clips, incidentally forcing greater under exposure than necessary. The waveform is a little lopsided as well but far better. When I finally get my TV logic going ill feel a lot better.

Other thing was getting the canon 70-200 MKii off of the camera for a bit and exploring, that helped me gain a sense of what the glass did versus camera.

Its nowhere near as vampiric as I thought. Lol. You basically just nail exposure with maybe a stop to favor highlights or you let them go. Simple as that.

@strancali - it's solid. Like really solid. I'm impressed as heck right now. Thanks for lettin break yours before you even had a chance to shoot.

Hey man it's not problem at all. You are doing this community a great service for putting your time in and working out the kinks for us :). I'm just glad you had enough time to figure things out and still tweaking it to be even better.

Kholi, are you also bringing back the clipping in premiere or FCPX? XAVC seems to read the same way as AVCHD does, right or is that just a QuickTime thing on the mac?

Looks really good Kholi. Been looking forward to some moving images from you with this camera.

I finally got to play around with mine a bit more this weekend. The camera is special and eats up low light with nice DR. I bought it with a EF to E metabones. But today I really wanted a native lens with the camera so I bought the 24-70 f/4 Zeiss. Totally different camera with this glass. What I really like is while in manual focus if you hit that AF/MF button for one touch focus it's super snappy before recording and if you use it while recording it's super smooooooth and accurate. The lens is really nice looking optically. Then, the build of the lens is just awesome. Super compact and really light! What FF mirror less is suppose to be. Just an all around different camera with a native lens.

Looking forward to some of your findings Kholi. (I too like punchy saturation which is why I'm looking forward to your tests).

I also bought the 500$ metabones ef to nex adapter mark iV, a 500$ but still hasn't tried it yet with a ef lens.
I was wondering if i should get some additional prime EF / or Zeiss EF lens, the 28-70 L 2.8 II or go for some zeiss FE lens.
The 50 1.8 is supposely to be a true Gem, the 35mm really excellent and the zoom quite good but not sure how actually..

How IS and autofocus works on these lens compared to the canon metabones's road?
What do you think about the color, microconstrast, bokeh and 3d organic look of this sony zeiss soom? For a video all around workhorse, do you believe it's the best option and compromise?

Curious to hear all opinions about...

Cheers

Only have had it a few hours but so far I really like the lens. The IS is great and the AF is super responsive in stills. On video the AF works quite well, especially when you use the MF/AF button. It's a Zeiss Tessar T*. What you would expect from aZeiss zoom is in the image. But the reason I bought it was to have one good zoom native mount on the A7s. Lets just say that the A7s with the Zeiss is smaller and lighter than my 24-105L with the metabones attached.

The IS works well on the Canon mounted with Metabones. The AF, even for stills, SUCKS with the EF Metabones mounted.

How is the optical performance of the lens at wider ranges? I really wanted to like the lens but all of the optics performance ratings are very poor for the lens, especially for its cost.

I'll play with it tomorrow and give a better report but my first impressions are that the lens is very good. Let's say I'm not at all regretting buying the lens.

The FE 24-70 is really sharp in the center throughout the range, less so on the edges - though its gets better stopped down, and its a native stabilized lens. It's gets a bad rep from some of the pixel peepers for soft corners and distortion, but if you search Flickr there are a lot of really nice images shot with this lens. There were a few reports of decentered copies early on including photozone - but some of the resolution numbers were eye popping, and because its on the interweb - suddenly everyone is calling the lens crap - even when they haven't shot with it. I'm really torn between the ZA 24-70 + LAEA4 or the FE as my all around standard lens since I already have the 28-70. I'm going to rent them before making a decision.

I own the FE 24-70 and the FE 70-200 f4 and I can tell you that I felt in love with them, especially the the 70-200.
I happily switched from Nikon d800e to sony a7r and bought these 2 lenses with no regrets. Optically they are excellent.
I'm not disappointed about softness as someone mentioned in the 24-70 reviews on bhp, but bear in mind that up to 35mm it has some distortion when compared to my 24-70 f2.8 nikon. Colors reproduction are just zeiss :)
For video, I'd esitate to use it in a gig because it focuses by wire. I never feel confident when rack focusing.
However for occasional shooting or if you need to be discrete it is ok.
Hope this helps,
Diego

Wow Kholi! This is really nice! :)

TRYING to figure it out xP Painting with menu settings, it's a good thing it kinda only needs to be done once, then archived just in case you reset.

Roman also mentioned the 24-105 being a pretty good fit, I can see why. I don't have access to the Zeiss but I imagine it's pretty wicked on the camera.

I'm actually in R11. Just setting project settings to view at data level. XAVC-S all the way. That should show what range is there and useable. I'm not sure if setting to video in the actual clip pool is a good idea, but monitoring at video should be fine.

I don't know how XAVC-S works... I kinda get the impression that it doe all of its best work down bottom, though, as in like blacks to lower mids. During a stage of experimenting with black gamma it appeared that XAVC-S really likes having blacks to record, and you can move them quite a lot for 8-bit. Never had that experience with AVCHD. It also lead me to increasing black levels overall in the PP I have setup.

Here's a shot, using the Canon 24-105mm f/4 with Metabones VIII. Image is slightly underexposed from the start, but hey we're shoot at 32,000 ISO! If it was a test, I would have tried shooting at 64,000 ISO to properly expose, and then bring down the blacks later. But was too afraid of getting to much noise.

Has anyone shot any night exteriors at 64,000 ISO? Acceptable grain? Or not?

(don't mind DVX compression on the photo)
