A7s sample footage

Playing with some LUTs, adding a camera profile of a completely different camera as a pre-LUT and attempting to bend the image post all LUTs with Colorista II to reflect a somewhat neutral skin tone on my uncalibrated monitor, which completely makes no sense.

I would really like to see a grading example so we can judge S Log 2 skin tone with either an indoor shot or an outdoor shot with IR filter.

There is something I have seen for a long time, since the Technicolor Cinestyle Canon DSLR footage on Vimeo, and now this same thing shows up in Sony S-Log2 footage.

When people do the grading in computer, most of times the highlights are not preserved, also the shadows goes too much deep... It seems to be very difficult to grade the flat image, to recover the correct gamma and contrast, and keep the shadows and highlights without crush/clip.

If you take a look at these links and compare before/after grading you will perceive that the highlights could be more preserved in the graded images. So, why shoot Cinestyle in Canon or S-Log in Sony if you cannot do a perfect grading in post to preserve all dynamic range? Is this a matter of grading skill? Or it is just impossible to preserve all the dynamic range in highlights and shadows after grading? See:

Lulz. You're not grading with a glossy Apple screen are you? I tried that on a short when I was at film school and my film ended up looking like ungraded cinestyle. I'd be lying if I said I was drunk at the time.

Nah, just glossy eyes. I think I figured out Resolve and whatever the hell I thought I was doing last night.

Awesome. This is what I was hoping. I just wasn't sure if it only achieved this when outputting 4K. I thought the 1080p might have some line skipping etc as something must be getting dumped compared to the 4k full read out. But as I said, I have very limited knowledge on this.

It does appear to be lineskipping/binning @ 60p and it certainly is in APS-C mode.

accdg to wingrove on twitter:
"A7s crops 100/120fps to APSC in all modes. Undisclosed / undocumented gotcha @sony"

I don't think it's lineskipping the 120p though. I wish they had of done the same with the 60p and avoided lineskipping, 60p 720p is fine with me cause I can shoot 1.5x anamorphic to get 1080p slo mo. Looks like I'll be keeping the 5D to shoot clean 60p. I'm starting to think about whether I should be getting an A7s at all.

It's a complete lack of a critical visual eye for such details. People just go overboard. Kind of like a kid making a meal. Just throwing things in willie nilly. A LUT here, a film convert preset there, twiddle the settings randomly to see what happens. And you end up with a raw chicken and sour milk hard rice pudding with frozen sprout mud pie. Or even worse: Teal and Orange.

Your first link with the street scene is a good example. The original slog2 looks better than any of the grades. It maybe just needs the shadows lowering just a tad for more contrast. Anything more is pretty pointless

Right but he mentioned he shot in crop mode as well during that shoot.

Ahh man, I hope it was the crop.

Can somebody shoot some full frame 60p and let us know if there's any aliasing, it's a real deal breaker for me if there is.

I'll ditch the LUTs which I was finding somewhat destructive to the image, and with just a few clicks with my favourite CC plugin, I'll go with cyork's fine sample as a reference point, my sample version below.

I Can't wait to see how these colours look once I am better calibrated. Thanks to everyone sharing some samples with me on the previous pages.
