A7s sample footage

The more I look, the more I'm leaning on the 'buy it now' button.
I was an FS100 owner and loved using it- but traded up for a C100 when that became available. I also used an FS700 for some slo-mo stuff on a documentary I shot in the Bahamas.
I never got used to the color out of the Sony cameras. Hopefully (and from what I've seen), Sony have "fixed the red velvety reds, and blown out yellowed highlights I'd come across from time to time.
Bot those cameras are gone now and I've been shooting 5DIII RAW mlv's. I was thinking of using it next month for a spot I'm planing, but may just get an a7S and save myself the headache of the dreaded RAW workflow!
Anyone interested in a Canon 5DIII? =]

I wonder if they will offer a simple kit with a kit lens; often Sony will discount a kit lens by about $300 when bought with a body - it would be nice to have even the sucky 28-70 emount so as to have something with autofocus that's snappy a)for walking around/pics of my kids b) to use on a gimbal/steadicam for now. I guess there's tons of aps-c e mounts out there for sale for cheap but it'd be nice to have a fullframe.

I really think the A7s is going to be a better B Camera to the Canon C100 and C300 due to DR and similar ISO sensitivity. Thats what I'm hoping for at least. I will know in a couple of days.

Yeah, looking at the footage I feel the overall look of the A7S is going to complement my C300 footage more easily than my GH4 does...

Although I really don't like the fringing I've seen around high-contrast specular highlights... :-( But based on the fact it hasn't shown up in all of the footage I've seen, I'm really hoping that perhaps that "issue" is only really objectionable in APS-C mode.

I'm starting to get excited about this camera again, is that bad?

I think I will wait until the Fall, when the Shogun is released and I can pickup a used Sony a7S for around $2k on eBay.

We have a Sony Z100 as our "workhorse" camera, you know, for the crap work.

It would be great to have a beautiful 4k full-frame camera for the artsy/pretty stuff.

We also have a Sony FS700 (it's for sale! it has the 4K upgrade! please buy it! :( that I spent $7,200, but it's just not a good fit for a company with a limited budget. I'm breaking the bank to outfit it. Then I have a very expensive, awkward camera for a single shooter/operator.

So the a7S looks like a great way to get beautiful full-frame 4K at a low price.

even at f2.8 it look sharp, so i think some of the test is soft is really user focusing and setting problem.
Beside that really found that if there is lighting exist, iso can bring up to very high still give less noise compare to totally zero lighting. Same to the concept of at least using some lights at photo, i found that it is much more easier to recovery from very dark image to normal exposure without losing many details and giving many noise compare to no light had been use at all. Lighting still very important to a video/photo, but with a7s it is much more easier to deal with only some light.

Here is a dropbox link to various a7S files including 24p AVCHD, 720 XAVCs, and 96fps footage.
Enjoy!

Here's the direct quote form " https://vimeo.com/98137975 " Vimeo link:

here you can find some of the original files; some of them in 60p, others in 23.97p and the slow motion is in 120p and you must to slow it donw in post;
all of them handhel and with a no stabilizated lens, very fast, very ruff; but we want to try the worse scenarios:

Just downloaded and played the files back in Premier Pro. It is strange the 120fps clips dont playback slow in a 23.976 timeline. I had to slow it down to 20% and it looks pretty good. At 15% it's a little choppy. Upscaling works well too. Pretty nice.

Lady in the shade, under umbrella, well exposed. Clouds in background, directly hit by sun, not blown by a wide margin. Nice.

Doesn't look like there is much sun if any in this shot. On the other hand, the last shot with the girl seems to have the highlights blown (both ground and sky).
Not sure if this is graded but there is a noticeable magenta cast in skin (and neutrals).

Do you think its better than 96fps of GH4?

I put some GH4 96fps shots side by side with the A7s and It's really hard to pick a winner. The shots are just so different. One is soda pouring in a glass indoors and the other is kites flying outside.

Also I upscaled the A7s to 150% to 1080 and it holds up well.

Could you please share because the original dropbox is already freaking out about bandwidth, EDIT never mind I found the google mirror on the vimeo link.

Matt Allard at Newsshooter.com has dug a little deeper into the whole world cam issue. He has found out that there are three different Sony A7s models, one ntsc locked, one pal locked, and only one that is switchable.

The A7S UK site http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-7s/specifications seems to have removed most of the references to non 50Hz frame rates. I guess we're not one of the "switchable PAL" countries...

Boooo!

The code for the switchable one, according to the article, is "AP2"... which I'm guessing is "Asia Pacific"... so I wonder if the Australian one is switchable, but the European one isn't...

Also Mathew states that the USA version has record limit of 29 minutes and 50 seconds. That's lame! I hope that can be fixed in firmware. Just not necessary.
