A7s sample footage

@evanburke The HDMI out is uncompressed 8bit 422.

@payal_choksi Hard to tell at this point which is why I'm getting one to do some tests. If it doesn't outclass the MK3 raw I might still keep it for night scenes where I won't have to use a generator.

@squig thanks! Sorry for being dumb.

Uncompressed makes me happier, as much as 8bit still has to walk a fine line when grading S-Log2.

He mentioned that it was shot with a NTSC-Model - so it is not a world camera? The 120fps slomo shot at 13:13 looks really bad to my eyes and the slog2/iso3200 thing is pretty weird...

The a7 and a7r manuals say that the PAL version is a world camera but the NTSC version is not. We had some talk here wondering if something that silly could actually be true.

edit:
Just finished watching the Matthew Allard review. Apart from seeing the menus and some new footage, and the ISO 3200 thing for slog2, not really not *that* useful. He is so in love with the camera that he can spin the super-stupid Sony image review system (where you have to go deep in the menu to review a still image if the last thing you shot was video) as a good thing. You can take that level of positiveness as a good sign that the camera is really good, but I take it as a bad thing because I can't trust other stuff he says about whatever I don't already know about.

I want to see a proper DR test (something like this) comparing the a7s with a 5D3 or an FS700 or some other well-known point of reference.

Yea, I think the 3200 in Slog issue may, for me, be the end of the line for this little cam. I predict I would choose to shoot Slog 99% of the time....and that odd handicap is going to become a major pain....every shoot on some level. The battery life is also gonna make this a " not fun" camera to use.

Is is it a 5d3 replacer? Maybe. So I might still get it. I can't stand the look of 5d video anymore.

A little torn.

What's the surprise here? Doesn't most, if not all, Sony cameras that shoot S-Log2 have a rather high ISO for that? FS700 is 2000, F55 1250? Should be no surprise then that the A7S, which is more light sensitive have an even higher ISO...
With FS700 though, you have built in ND filters... But if you shoot much in daylight maybe another camera is better for you to begin with? I shoot mostly in dark places and am yet to use the ND filter on my FS700 ;)

I personally have never owned a Sony cam. We shoot mostly Red and Canon cinema. So it's slightly unusual coming from other camera's specs.

3200 is just higher than what has previously been stated.... Then changed for the production cam...

that..... Is the surprise.

Apparently the 3200 thing is nonsense.. more like 1600 for slog2, who really knows.
I think the a7s is due for release today-ish but we just don't seem to get proper test samples or solid info.
Someone did test the crop mode recently in avchd but who is ever gonna use that?
Keep hearing of high ISO shooting with monster DR but in reality after the marketing hype machine is done I think well have something just a little more light sensitive and a little more dynamic than what we used to seeing from DSLRs :)
personally I'm not spending a panny until I see some solid proof of what's really going on here. Most of the time I only find out a cameras real performance once it's in my hands and tested thoroughly.

hi, I'm the guy who did the stress test with a7S, APS-C mode, AVCHD, moire, highlight aliasing, and comparison between FS700...
today i've checked a7S at the store (already available and cost around under $2K for body) and confirmed that base ISO is now set twice high, 3200. not like the one I've tested the other day. it was set 1600, same as Den lennie and the other people did test with.

i've personally wanted base ISO even lower than 1600 for S-Log2, a7S has enough good sensor could go like 1250...that was my first impression so this is kinda sad decision they made :(

however it should have some nice reason Sony did change so I will ask them at next meeting.

Sony seems to always delibrately cripple low end cameras in some way. With the great reviews of Slog2 they had to make it harder to use to protect the pro line.

Please do...for some of us... that may be a deciding factor. If I have to put on an ND during a rock concert, I'm gonna shoot myself in the face.

better yet.... I'll just use another camera.

If Sony want to sell the A7s to filmmakers they better switch S-log back to 1600 ISO. 800 would be better. 3200 is just stupid and I'm hearing a lot of people who were excited now having second thoughts including me. If Sony are deliberately trying to cripple the A7s they can forget it I'm not buying it. They better have a good explanation for the firmware change.

If DR is good enough nothing should stop you from exposing s-log at 1600 even though it is nominally 3200.
You will probably want to do this for clean blacks anyway, and this is something people do with s-log on other cameras all the time.

It's possible that's just the gain setting with the lowest read noise and best DR and everything else is inferior. Wouldn't be that surprising since slog2 spec has about 7stops of DR over it's middle grey value as well, so rated ISO has to be high.

I'm that someone who did that APS-C mode test on vimeo, and I think many professional people wanna try this camera with super 35mm cine lens, you know. crop mode is one major feature for variety of professional work and we just can't ignore that.

metabones smart vet.3 or newer should be good for canon/EF mount full size lens for full size mode, that's one good part of it.

XAVC-S must have some improvement for image quality but it's just big 8Bit420 data, I really wanted XAVC, not XAVC-S.

and one more thing, it clearly does exist that rolling shutter issue in full size mode. for avoiding that problem, APS-C crop mode will be very helpful.

that's why I did that crappy test.

Pretty crazy, ask me yesterday...I'd be all in.

now looking at the cons: rolling shutter, mandatory NDs often, extra crappy battery life ( with the use of Metabones), required accessories for normal shoot (battery grip, Metabones, extra chargers, extra batteries), extra $2k for a 4k recorder, missing the marks on DR....

I may not purchase at all. Besides shooting Red, my c100 has the big battery and my ninja a 480ssd...built in NDs.... I don't have to do a damn thing all day and can shoot in any environment...and it's sharp as a tack.

I guess I would be replacing the 5d3, and there is an argument for that, as I think the 5d has a pretty terrible video mode.

So I'm on the fence. If they changed the 3200 ISO thing to help eliminate NDs in some situations, it would be one less evil to possibly push me over the edge into purchasing.

Might just be a better idea to wait 6-12 months to see the other companies appropriately respond with new products. It's just a matter of time.

@ReelWorksMedia

That's why I was (still am) considering the Sony a7S, as a replacement for my Canon 5Dmk3.

Not to sidetrack the conversation too much, but the C100 is a really nice camera, I've always been super impressed with the video it captures.

Real question: Would you rather shoot with the C100, or the 5Dmk3 in RAW?
