a6300 news

That is the first lowlight/high iso footage I see from the camera...and I think its really good even at 12800...

In my opinion this is the first camera that combines EVERYTHING....a video shooter would wish for:
4k without overheating
high fps in 1080p
good DR with S-LOG
very good AF
clean high ISO
Well...at a price around 1000$ I think that little baby will sell like crazy...

Wow, Sony is kicking some butt lately. This camera is quite nice. I have an RX10 II and am thinking of getting this as well. The two would be a great compliment to each other for interview shoots as well as a great slo-motion tag team! Outside of FF, is there that much of a reason to get an A7R II compared to this camera?

Begs the question/comparison - a6300 vs A7r II vs Fs5 How much would image quality vary on most shoots? I am talking end result, delivered product not ergonomics etc... I am guess not very much.

Just add IBIS and 10-bit internal and the two I buy will be the last cameras I buy for awhile.

I know 10-bit is always a stretch, someone will do it eventually. I think it'll be Panasonic with the GH4's successor.

Like others have said, Nikon, Olympus and Fuji have nothing to lose by going all out with video capabilities since there's nothing above to cannibalize.

Maybe one day soon...

Good to know, Chris. Perhaps it's something with how YouTube 4k looks on my 1080p monitor.

That's exactly what it is, to get a sense of what 4k looks like, you need to be watching it at full size, otherwise when its being squeezed it looks bad. I tried uploading screen caps but it looks like they got super compressed when I uploaded them. I'll try another host.

I'll be shocked if the GH5 has 10 bit internal.

Is this amount of luma and chroma noise (see water) to be expected froma a slightly underexposed slog3 shot? This is a 100% crop of a 4k clip at iso 800 with a simple slog3 to rec709 lut applied.

No, I stand by what I said.
BMD URSA Mini has a 10-bit out via 12G SDI already and it's a $3,000 camera. Now, the image may not be Oscar worthy but it is 10-bit and it's already shipping. Or was shipping. And may resume shipping. At some point.

And so, it can be done and it is done. BMD has, obviously, been trying to up its competition on specs but the camera was announced a year ago and, by this NAB, its specs ought not be anything out of the extraordinary. The 4K 10-bit connection can also be done via HDMI 2.0a, which is more likely to be the case with the newer line of cameras (and compatible external recorders) in the sub-$10,000 category.

The pocket records 10-bit 422 prores HQ internally. But I agree that Sony probably won't give us internal 10-bit on "photography" bodies in a few years.

ISO 12800 looks reasonably clean indeed. And being able to go from 800 to 6400 without a big increase in noise is pretty nice (being able to go from 3200 to 12800 on the a7S made me save a lot of $$$ and ND filter changes by buying 3-stop 6-stop and 9-stop filters only).

@JoeThePro: try a curve instead of a LUT, I've seen LUTs introduce all kinds of image issues. Also, we still don't know if slog3 offers any advantages over slog2 on the a6300, but since there are none on the a7S II my guess is that DR won't be improved here either and then slog2 would be my preferred option.

Reasons for going for an a7R II instead: high-mpix stills with -probably- more DR (I'm talking RAW stills here), IBIS, shallower DoF if you stick to FF mode (which you can also get on the a6300 with a speedbooster but then your corners will be slightly softer). None of those would convince me to spend the extra $1500-$2200, but there they are.
Reasons for going for an a7S II instead: IBIS, extreme low light, shallower DoF (same speedbooster-on-a6300 comment). Again, far from enough for the $$$$ if you ask me, but YMMV.

IBIS in the next model, maybe.

I don't think we'll ever see IBIS in those low/mid-end APSC bodies. It's basically the one feature that separates them from two-three times more expensive FF models. All this talk about trying to keep the body size as small as possible is BS - if they wanted they would've included it but they know it would hurt A7x sales a lot.

Face recognition (aka registration) on A6300. Pretty nifty, I say.

I wonder if there is a way to rack focus between faces during a shot. A user assignable easy to press button that would toggle focus between face 1 and face 2 during video recording would be an AWESOME feature.

Apples and oranges. One is a video camera and the other is and mirrorless digital still camera that happens to also record video.

I did try LGG and contrast adjustments as well, same result, maybe a bit less chroma noise. Slog3 just wont yield super clean results even with the improved sensor tech. Looks like slog2 is probably the better way to go.
