a6300 news

I had thought that we were going to hear news of the a6100/a7000 release earlier this month at the show, but that came and went. Any ideas on when the announcement might come?

A6000/6100 was first reported as a "ready for release" rumor a year ago Then there were quotes that the A7S/RII/SII series proved so popular, the assembly plants were prioritizing them and A6000/6100 went on a back burner. Then R100IV and RX10II came out, and Sony didn't want to compete with itself on that front. Then - and I am speculating here - it occurred to Sony managers that a 2016 model should have better specs than a 2015 model, especially when competing against G7 in the sub-$700 market. So, they revised the plans again and bumped the specs up to be sort of the APS-C version of RX10II.

In any case, there seem to be a bunch of new products coming out at CP+ - Fuji, Olympus, Sony, Canon - so their PR announcements are likely to be staggered and prearranged. One week, X; the next week, Y. And, given that there are only four weeks left ...

Makes sense. Im definitely eager to hear what the specs and price are. Im really hoping for a sensor no greater than 24MP with NX1 or better noise performance, 4k video, a mic input, and fixes to the complaints people had about the a6000 like the face detection smoothing. Sensor stabilization would be awesome, but Im sure that would hike hte price up quite a bit.

IBIS shouldn't be much of a problem: what we are asking for is an APS-C version of the a7 II. That one sells for $1700 body-only, so the APS-C sibling could easily be $1300 at launch (the NEX-7 was $1200). Give it internal 4K with no artifacts and slog2+sgamut3.cine, and it's the perfect companion for the twice-as-expensive a7S II.

If they put slog2/3 in there I would **** my pants.

IBIS and good 4k internal would be awesome, not holding my breath, but with Sony you never know. I would prefer a crop body because of lens size, costs are dramatically lower, and the fact that the E mount crop lineup covers a broader range despite what Sony claims is coming on the FE side. Plus a speedbooster brings the DOF back to FF territory and the new AF gives you good performance with Canon lenses.

Build it an Ill buy two.

Have there been any specifcs about that, or is it more just "we're going to improve the line-up"?

After the A7rII dropped there were interviews and presentations stating a total of 20 FE lenses to be announced by the end of 2015, the assumption is that meant another 7 are in the pipeline. But we obviously haven't seen anything yet, just lots of rumors. The roadmap only shows a large aperture prime that many are speculating 85/1.4. The link below shows the unfinished part of the roadmap under the label ~2015.

I opened a new thread on the G-Master lenses. 24-70mm F2.8 has been out in testers' hands (allegedly) but there's no news on whether it'll be stills oriented or have some video friendly features.

In any case, for them to do a 24-70 2.8 and a 16-35 2.8 in E would be a major boon to Sony owners.

PS. Rumors of A9/99II have also been around forever. Once again, Sony hit a sweet spot with A7S/SII/RII and they're going to squeeze as much profit out of that line for as long as they can.

Even my RX100 IV has slog2, with very similar DR to that of my old a7S. I won't consider a camera with less than that anymore.

Yes I was very surprised to see slog2 in that camera. Hopefully its a trend now. Funny that Panasonic crippled their vlog profile for the GH4, yet Sony is like HERE YOU GO! SLOG FOR ALL!!

Looking at this camera with interest. Imagine the potential for DR, high frame rates and low light if Sony made an APS-C camera with a BSI sensor and kept the pixel count down. Alas, that's probably not in the cards as they have opted to use the BSI tech to minimally bump up ISO but pack in more resolution for stills. I'm with Samuel on the IBIS though; seems like a doable feature.

If we do get a stabilized body, I'm curious about good standard zoom options. Does a lens like the A-mount DT 16-50mm f/2.8 now become a good choice for video? What are you guys using in terms of fast, standard zooms?

Mostly adapted lenses from Canon/Nikon. A-mounts are great with the right adapter, heck they can even autofocus, but they are stuck at f/3.5 if doing AF in video mode, and still required a mirrored adapter to get any kind of decent AF speed... unless they start including the A7rii's special sauce for focus. They really upped the game on the hybrid PDAF on that beast to the point that it claims to focus DSLR-style lenses with near native speeds without a glass PDAF adapter. I'd love it if they did that!

...heck, I'd just be happy if they finally address the waxy skin bug. :/

Step one is to give us an APS-C camera that doesn't overheat in video mode! That would be a first.

Step 2, one that doesn't overheat in 4K. I've been shooting Sony as a supplement to my Nikon and Canon cameras for stills for 7+ years. But I had to go with Panasonic to get a reasonable time limit for 4k.

I would love to be able to go back to Sony APS-C, and to use my Canon lenses on the camera with decent autofocus. Like I already can on M 4/3 ....

The original delays last summer were supposedly because of overheating. I hope Sony has either solved the overheating, or they will give us a second body that is a little bigger than the stills-centric camera. They really need to deliver on video!

The rumors have said that the A6100 will have a 36 MP sensor. Does that open up a niche for a lower MP video version, like the A7s?

The latest rumor says it's essentially the same body as the a6000. It's SR5, so, almost certainly the case. This raises the chances that overheating will still be an issue, and that it won't have IBIS.

I don't mind about the overheating, but IBIS would have been really nice.
