Cast

Finally got a name a poster and a finished product...

We are going with "A Shot of Faith" and the poster is pretty wicked. I think when this is all done I am going to have some full page posters printed for my cast and crew and get everyone to sign them.... Small community so everyone should love that.

I forgot how much fun these festivals are... I am psyched to get onto the next one.

Wow! I'm super excited to see this film. It's rare to see people post so late in the competition! WOOHOO I'm the first to reply! Anyway. . . Good luck!

I actually got involved in this a while back...just didn't have a name for my project... Was out celebrating the finished product with a few drinks when my girlfriend said.... what about "A Shot of Faith".... so.... that was that....

you planning on posting the poster or any grabs, bts etc? I know I'd be interested in getting a sneak peak of what's to come......

Yep... Just posted a few of them... Wish I had more of the continuity photos this way I can show what it looked like before and after we did the set dressing... Plus all the neat little things we threw in to make it look cool we don't have photos of and its hard to see in the film since I had to cut a lot to meet the 6 min requirement.

Oh well...

Congrats! I'm looking forward to seeing what you've come up with here.

edit:
Oh... there's the poster....NICE!

There were technical issues, the technical people will address. The only one that kept bugging me is that the sound seemed off in the beginning. That bad guy sure did talk a lot. The victim did a real great job. Nice job overall.

I think this was an excellent attempt here. I like the simplicity of the story and the style here. I liked the look of the characters and the female actress did an excellent job. I would say the rest of the acting was passable, but one thing that hurt the production a little bit was the sound. The music seemed a little too loud in spots and the actors voices didn't pop out from the background enough. Did you use a boom?

Some of the effects were good and some could use a little more tweaking. The smoking gun at the end for instance. If that was much more subtle it would have been more believable, I think. The deaths (the way the actors died) were very good. I'll mention one thing too that I know you can't do anything about in this production, but may be something to look out for the in the next. The main guy and that toothpick was very annoying (to me). It was too much and took away a bit from him and what he was doing. The toothpick seemed to become its own character. Your actor just kept moving it around from here to there like it was an attempt to be cool or tough I guess, but I just thought it was a bit too much. This is only my opinion and nobody else may have that issue at all, so take it for what it's worth (about a penny :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)).

One more note, the music, especially at the beginning didn't seem to fit the mood of the film. It initially made me think the film was a comedy, simply because of the music. I think it was just at the beginning though.

Anyway, I like what you did here and your vision. I can see your films getting better and better as you go. Can't wait to see what you come up with next. Good luck!

A Shot of Faith

Nice Production Value. Good Set. Great Costumes. Some of the acting was shaky. The sound needed some work. The story was very cliche' but the ending was good. Good effort.

Your cast looks fun, your movie looks fun. What's the location?
We shot in a small bar in Reno NV... The original script called for an authentic saloon which we had scouted but the owners got very skittish about letting us shoot there about a week out of production so we found this place which was amazing... it just forced us to do a little modifying of the script.

The sound was a little off and that has since been fixed. The actual film ended up being a little over 12 min and I had to decide what to cut and what to keep in order to keep the story moving and not make it to jumpy. There is quite a bit of characterization that is missed due to the cuts that I made.

Did you use a boom?
We did use a boom. Unfortunately we do not have access to any decent lav's yet and the Reno area is very sparse when it comes to film makers with equipment. The booms that we used were Super Cardioid Condensed Mics <- I think thats what the sound guy said but I don't know much about sound to know if this is what we should have been using... If you have any suggestions I would be very open to them.

The smoking gun at the end for instance. If that was much more subtle it would have been more believable,
I will do that. I should probably do that to the smoke on the boot when the Stranger enters the bar as well... Thanks.

Thanks, I can't wait until the next fest but I have a bunch of things going on out here between now and the next fest. I will be posting them on my website www.archonfilms.com (which will be put up with in the week) and you might see some posts here asking for some advice on some parts of the production.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi Gaer

Great job on getting this into the fest. I wasn't sure what direction you were going with this at first - I too felt like it was going to be a comedy, and there were some really funny moments. I really liked the lead in this. Great voice, he brought a lot of charisma to the part. My main issue with the piece was the bartender - he seemed eminently useless through the whole thing. I'm not sure if that's what you were going for, or if he just got lost in all the cutting you made to meet the time limit.

"You are one frustrating f***, you know that!" - best line of the fest!

Yea.. the bartender has quite a bit more to say in the longer version. He actually stands up to Blake a little before he is forced down by the reveal of the gun. I was trying to make the characters representative of the culture of that time. The bartender was supposed to be the everyman who will stand up for what is right until he is threatened and then back down regardless of the possible consequences such as the rape and murder of this girl.

I really liked the cinematography for your opening shots and the compostion with the statue. The story was a classic western confrontation which of course works well for the fest. I liked the hero and the location worked well.

My issues were that I missed the dialogue in some spots because of the sound. I have to agree with Marlon about the main villain and the thoothpick. I see what you were going for but he probably should have lost it before his dialogue to the hero.

Overall a good effort and fun to watch!

I have a feeling the soundguy's weren't experienced ?

Dialogues sound from "far"... little bit to roomy.

Don't be afraid to come closer with the mice... 0,0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 inch out of frame = out of frame.

The story, was little bit less for me... But that's also because of the "not 100% perfect sound captured" dialogues I think

I do miss a few sounds in the salloon. Like laying down the wapon etc... (which also has to do with the "less story")

For the costumes, location that looked very well done.
