5D MKIII specs

I'm glad to see some charts finally... so the 5D3 is doing close to 900 you think? Hmmm.

You know what, I'm going to add a little grain to some of the downloads we have here and see if that changes the soft feel. It has often helped with the 5D2.

From my informal test, it looks like 800-900. What does it look like to you (must compare with downsampled still: reading the video chart by itself would not be correct since the camera was not cropped to the 16x9 mark on the test chart)? The test really needs to be done properly with an actual full sized test chart ($150+).

Did you try sharpening in post with in-camera sharpen turned off?

Again, no halos with in-camera sharpen turned off. I did this test as soon as the camera arrived- chart was already printed.

To do a proper max-res test, I think you'd need to move the camera on a slider until the sensor optimally lined up with the fine grid. I shot these handheld. This is just a ballpark test. I guessed 800-900 as the diagonal 800 looks very good and I can still see a good black-white alternation up to around 900. If anyone has a GH2 (or 5D2 to with VAF), print the chart and try the test. Crop the camera to 4:3, then show the downsampled still and the video frame.

Given your criteria and rating 700+ for this chart, how do you rate the GH2 from the chart you posted? (same horizontal area)

Dude, you're a MOD here. And very combative. What gives?

I'm not even sure why you found that combative. I replied to Hans, passively agreeing with Hans that the logic behind the claims is off base. I wasn't attacking Hans, that's for sure. And, I definitely haven't even responded to the last few posts you aimed at me.

Just because I've got yellow text under my name doesn't mean I'm A) Not allowed to joke around B) not allowed to challenge posted information with experience C) Not allowed to respectfully engage in discussion or debate on a certain topic.

I haven't called you out of your name or referred to you in any negative fashion, mistreated you or disrespected you. If I have, please PM me and let me know where the post is so that I can apologize and have it deleted.

Well, I just added some noise/grain to vimeo vid 90028476 (nice little rap, nice, well focused wides), and by god if it didn't help a lot. Is this camera just too clean out of the box?

Honestly, the tests I've seen vs the GH2 do really look soft, but maybe that's a contrast/grain thing... Like agent Mulder, I Want To Believe...

The GH2 on that horizontal looks for sure more aliasy and nearly reaches 700 but not quite:

Yet, general footage still looks more detailed? Are we sure the detail above 700 is aliased and fake, or is there some processing magic on the GH2 right making it seem more detailed? Hmm interesting...

Can you send me the video of your 5DMK3 with the same resolution chart (framed to the 16:9> arrows) ifyou have the time please? Cheers

How is sharpening a 5D III image better than sharpening a 5d ii with AA filter image if both only resolve under 800 lines in the raw file? Is the argument that the 5d III resolves 900+ lines, but appears soft due to no aliasing? Because if that were the case, the raw clips would still have more visible detail... and that isn't apparent in the clips being posted. Sharpening exaggerates detail that is already there. I'm not seeing that initial detail.

Well I guess that's the $3500 question, but camera resolution tests are generally done straight out of the camera. Should we perhaps be doing the testing after the post workflow instead or as well?

Lastly, might I point out that all the arguments that are being pitched here against the Mark III due to it's related softness in comparison to the Mark II, are exactly the same arguments that were used against the AF100 vs. the GH1/2. There is an OLPF on the AF100. We know that it was a hardware solution. Guess what? It looks soft compared to an unhacked GH1/2. Well it turns out that today people prefer a slightly more aliased image because of the perception of sharpness. Welcome to the DSLR generation.

I read somewhere that the OLPF on the MKIII isn't as strong as the one on the MKII.

Koholi,
It's just the tone you perceive whether direct or indirect. As I said, you have posted lots of informative "helpful" material on DVXuser. But then you start posting Scary Door videos and I see no call for it. I'd like to think of DVXuser as a community that respects all input and opinion without such banter. Were here to discover and learn. Discuss and critique. I held my voice back last night after your twilight zone scary door posts. Took strength to do that. Then I get here to pick up from last night and you kept it up. You're not the only guy here with a gh2, has worked with epic footage, or has sat in a post house.
Let's keep the thread about getting to the bottom of how this mk3 and work and its advantage and disadvantages. As a guy with yellow under his name, I hope you can do this. You've challenged harshly JCS and he's here to help and discover.

I responded to what Pappas posted, a friend. How is that inappropriate??????

I'd like to think of DVXuser as a community that respects all input and opinion without such banter.

We should all make an effort to make sure everyone is welcome here. That means all of us, which also means referring to a group of people who actually dislike the MKiII footage as "doubters" probably doesn't help, right? Or, constantly lecturing people on how filmmaking works, cameras being still cameras, so on and so forth.

Were here to discover and learn. Discuss and critique. I held my voice back last night after your twilight zone scary door posts. Took strength to do that.

Like I said, I responded to Pappas, who responded to me. I'm pretty sure if I were "pro" MKIII that post wouldnt' have offended you, as apparently nothing Squig is saying (which is OBVIOUSLY in good jest--example:
It's the testosterone....you get used to him after a while.
) is offending you.

Then I get here to pick up from last night and you kept it up. You're not the only guy here with a gh2, has worked with epic footage, or has sat in a post house.

Let's be clear: I'm not the one comparing MKIII to GH2 stuff, Epic, or anything like that. I responded to people who asked me questions, or made strange statements. I only see a handful of people constantly going back to GH2 comparisons... oddly enougH? Most of them aren't people who are saying GH2's the better camera.

It surely wasn't me that brought up GH2 versus MKIII.

Let's keep the thread about getting to the bottom of how this mk3 and work and its advantage and disadvantages. As a guy with yellow under his name, I hope you can do this. You've challenged harshly JCS and he's here to help and discover.

Uhm, I've not even responded to JCS in this thread, ONCE. What are you talking about? Are you getting me confused with KahL or something????

Lastly, don't question my mod status. If you have an issue, email/PM Jason or someone. Let them handle it. And trust me, they will handle it. Whether or not I lose mod status (or offer it up to be taken away), it wont' change my participation level here. I was a member before I was a mod, and I'll be a pretty vocal one after as well.

I'm still trying to make sense of the "filmic" look justification for soft images coming from cameras being thrown out there more now.

Perhaps we're losing something in translation. Sharpness can mean a more harsh video look. Soft can mean a more organic film look. Yeah film is far more resolute and has more latitude in the highlights than any digital camera. Digital imagery is a bastard clone of film and we're not yet quite at the point we're at with digital audio and even the best 24bit A/D converters don't sound exactly like vinyl (well maybe they do now but I'm not a sinewave peeper anymore) mjpeg looks more "organic" than H.264 because it's softer and not macro blocky. The filmic look to me is based on a number of factors including DOF, resolution, grading, aliasing, lighting, framing, grain, and a bunch of other stuff that escapes me right at this moment.

Naaaw everyone Kholi is cool man. I only have beefs with him when he starts dissin on my fav films ;)

I am still most interested in the 5D3. Initially I wrote it off because all the footage I had seen at Launch was over-sharpened and kind of mushy, but now I'm warming up and waiting to see better crisper footage...

But sometimes you just wish he knew when to shutup....I wish I did when I was his age :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

xD The Squig is my [least] favorite old guy on the planet.

(By the way, we're clearly messing with each other in case that's not obvious.)

The point is: there are here friends trading posts. And other ones reading them as aggressive. Others taking them as example to address similar familiar tone to whom can't personally place here as family, yet.

On reduser they talk about sharpening all the time. Its no big deal only in how its applied. Theres no stigma to post sharpening. And didn't Jannard himself during the red one days say to add post sharpening to taste? A highly aggressive OLPF will put you in this corner. At the same time I understand where Kohli is coming from and he has been fair and clear about his thoughts and I have not seen any disrespect from him. I can't say that for some other people who just want a fight. Here are some reduser posts:

Wrong place to ask, but it's an active thread and someone might know. What size does the D4 sensor become in crop mode (2.7x)? Wouldn't that put it around super 16 size?

The cropped images from that cam have surprised me.
