5D MKIII specs

lol Kholi WHAT UP! Long time my friend..... I just got into biking (trails and such) and my legs have been virtually useless for a week.

Back on topic, I picked up a mk iii a few days ago. Today was my first time really playing with it outside and I was actually impressed. I'm not pixel watcher or anything though as I typically try to view footage as a "movie go'er" and not necessarily as a professional cinematographer. Otherwise, I'll go absolutely insane because I can only afford sub $10K cameras but yet still find things I don't like about sub $50k cameras. The mk iii obviously isn't the best choice for a feature but for what I do, usually music videos targeted for web, the mk iii suits the project just fine. I usually shoot good material only to fu@k it up in post with grunge like effects and weird color palettes anyway lol. With all that said I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Scarlet and if for any reason decide not to buy it then I might consider a low budget feature shot with the mk iii. One things for sure, I'm going to Australia in April with Diddy, Rick Ross, Chris Brown, Naughty by Nature and more celebs to shoot content for a Reality pilot and it'll all be shot on mk iii's

Ommgggggg. Clearly the 5Diii has done the craziest thing of all: make Jay Rod post on user. Very long time indeed. xD That job sounds like it's gonna be crazy. And post some bts of NbN doing inappropriate things if you can.

Shoot it up!

To anyone that wants do download a Prores version of I-frame mk3 v mk2 footage shooting things like a food strainer (moire/alias sharp test) and some shots of crazy rain, with everything shot at 1250 or higher, PM me your private e-mail and I'll link you to a dropbox download. It contains mk3 footage shoot no sharpen, +2 sharpen, and post sharpen. Nothing to scientific.
peace

Edit: I'm outputting then will upload. Will take some time as the file is 10 gigs.

The footage in this video looks awesome but I'll stand up and say that most of the recent cameras that have come out in the past 24 months+ can get pretty much the same image with two key factors in those images, awesome lighting and awesome locations.... Sure they'll be subtle (if any) differences for the VIEWERS naked eye to POSSIBLY pick up but 9.5 times out of 10 people watch things because of the story and not for the opportunity to press pause and scroll through frame by frame to look for aliasing, noise, or any of the digital imperfections that we nit pick over.

EDIT: I was refering to the video that Emanuel posted

LMAO! You got it man

If you're coming to Sydney we should have a beer....or 2.

Try riding after 3 years sitting on your arse writing a screenplay!

I'm considering the MKIII for my feature, maybe not for everything but a substantial amount of it....Kholi thinks I'm crazy, he's right for once.

Hey squig, I think we'll be in Sydney on the 15th and maybe a couple days afterwards. The link to the tour is: http://www.supafest.com.au/
But yeah man, we can link up. I'm not sure of what my schedule will look like while out there but I'll find out a few days prior and hit you up.

Some frames of grain I've been using with my MKII work

I loop a bunch of frames, add a layer in FCP, and mess with the opacity to taste.

Something you may wanna check out and I've cross examined it with several grain packages. Instead, try to get the Sapphire plugins and for this specific one "film damage".
If you do get it, turn off ALL options instead of the grain options. You quite literally have thousands of options from there within this tool. From large grain, to very fine 35mm like grain. Mono color, color, density, dust density (very subtle dust gives a world of personality), the whole nine yards. It also renders VERY quickly with the ability to toggle on and off (CS5.5). I've been using this for years and with the Cinegrain, Gorilla Grain and other options, never looked back.

Instead of buying hundreds of grain overlay packages, just get this one tool. Then you can easily and smoothly emulate nearly any film stock to your heart's desire.
Trust me, it works.

Yeah cool mate. Who you workin with here?

I'm shooting some tests with the MKIII for my feature the week before then...I'm looking for some dope music for the film so maybe you could hook me up. I used to run a label back before Kholi was born.

Being 18 is not a crime!

BY the way, Ant... From the heart: I think you would be crazy to not shoot a project you were passionate about on a camera you were enthusiastic about. I'm being very earnest.

Comfort in the tools you choose to create with is liberating.

I was gung Ho to shoot a 10K feature this April on a pair of Gh2s. That's crazy. But I will probably try to get an epic instead and rough it with canon glass on 10K instead. Gh2 as b-cam and story/world/POV cam.

Just get it done before its too late.

Thanks mate, I'll check it out. To date I've thought every digital grain filter sucked but I haven't tried this.

Funny you should say that considering it's an apocalyptic film.

Yeah comfort is key. I'll take the test stuff to some post guys with talent and we'll suss it on a big screen before I decide whether it's up to the job. The C300 is my fall back plan and I definitely want something with a lot of highlight latitude for the desert shots (only a couple of min) Most of the film is blade runnerish night stuff.

Gotta run...set building
peace out

I think we've gone over this bit already.
It's very obvious that no matter how much sharpening you use, low res is low res.
It's even more apparent with the Bugatti's grill. Sharpening helps some, but it doesn't compare to having an actual base high resolution image.

Sorry for bringing this up once again but if somebody is questioning the capacity of my eyes to judge decent footage I get a bit annoyed. ESPECIALLY THE BUGATTI'S GRILL. How sharps do you want it? With chilly maybe? The 5D MK III is sharp for what I've seen. The question is how to achieve it. It is very well explained that one can recover existing detail by sharpening - if the detail exists. And that seems to be the case with the MK III. If 800+ lines is not a significant improvement over 600+ lines I don't know what the word improvement means. For what I know at this moment the MK III is the most complete video DSLR that exists. There are gives and takes but the MK III seems to have a better looking image than the D4, has no aliasing, which the D800 has, and compared to the GH2, well, it has a headphone jack... :2vrolijk_08:

Well that's the problem. You AREN'T recovering detail, as you can't recover what isn't there. It's a placebo illusion and a pretty cute play on the concept altogether. These aren't RAW files, for the record. So you aren't "recovering" something via metadata. It just simply is not there.
What's happening is that the pixels are becoming sharpened and as someone mentioned in another post, they become chunky and fairly blocky due to the process. It may look decent on a smaller, 720p window frame, but on an actual 1080p screen, it looks pretty horrible.

And the camera doesn't appear to be resolving 800 lines either. That's just outright BS. If it were, it would be IMMEDIATELY recognizable beyond a few "wanting" eyes and wouldn't require sharpening past a ton of mud (it's gotten to the point where people are trying to say it's a 4k image in some posts now even). The image looks pretty similar to the 5DII, if not worse.

The justification has gotten pretty ridiculous up to this point, honestly.
When people are trying to come up w/ these mad scientist post formulas to render a halfway decent resolution on screen, then you KNOW something is wrong.

I wouldn't call Johns observations BS. Nor my judgement of his footage. I would say jury's out until a serious res chart shooting.
