550D/GH13 comparision shot

...what if folks made it worth his while? :D

I mentioned that people would pay a premium for a hack like that, but that didn't sway him. He is pushing 50 and seen it and done it, so you probably would have to find a 20 year hacker who is young and ready to change the world.

Grunf. Are you shooting with the same identical LENS? Those are huge variables. On top it all, the 550D image looked very overexposed. The image needs to be properly exposed to do a adequate comparison.

With that said, the detail on the GH1 is really good. I'm sure it's better than the Canons, but the Canon image the exposure is off for sure.

Also, not every lens exposes identical. On my Tamron 17-50 (at 50mm) at f2.8 looks about and half stop darker than the Canon 50mm f1.4 when shot at f2.8.

Like I said, I don't doubt the detail of the GH1, but the Canon is being misrepresented by a poorly exposed shot. Use the same lens, expose both camera's properly, then we have a test.

GH1 looks good, but it's really only useful to compare if you try and match settings between both cameras. The 550D shot is really washed out. You need to either lower the contrast on the GH13, or up the contrast on the 550D. Because low contrast tends to hide detail while crushed blacks gives the appearance of sharpness.

Grunf, what were the settings you were shooting at for both cameras?

Canon: Normal picture style, AWB, ISO 100, 1080p25.

Panny: don't know, I had camera for just couple of hours, haven't learn how to change picture styles at that point in time. Sharpening was set to "0" and ISO was 200, I believe.

Same place, both shot with tripod. No post-grading, just frame-grab.

Embedded here.

Even if the Gh1 shot is more crushed the dynamic range is still better....look at the clouds! Wowz!

I don't know that's a fair conclusion to draw... the Canon just looks overexposed, and that would cause the sky to overexpose, blowing out the clouds... if the canon was stopped down darker to match the GH1, I'm sure it could have held the clouds better than this pic shows, probably at least as well as the GH1 does... all my testing has shown them to be pretty comparable in dynamic range.

Holy cow ... whoever shot that 550D shot needs to spend a few hours reading the exposure for dummies book. The GH13 shot sure looks nice though:thumbsup:

The GH1 does look good, but it also looks baked in. And this is not a good example for drawing definitive conclusions because of overexposure and contrast settings on the T2i.

Yeah the T2i shot does look a little overexposed. Still, I feel like there is some detail in there that won't be there even with similar contrast adjustments, etc. But I think we're in agreement on that. Also I notice some light color contamination/moiré "fringing" (probably not best word as it usually applies to CA but that's the best way I can think to describe it) on the T2i shot on the rocks in the lower left.

Lightly tweaked the T2i shot to maybe be a little more contrasty and see if it looks sharper....won't help on the totally blown out areas, edges of trees (with sky), etc.

I don't doubt that the GH1 has the better resolution, but what some of you are forgetting is that aesthetics are an equally important part of the equation, and you have to choose what fits your aesthetics. Sorry to sound like a Philip Bloom whore, since I already quote him once in this thread, but he makes a good point. When asked if he's switching to the GH1, he said: "not for me as it doesn’t have the aesthetic or the low light of the Canons….especially the 5Dmkii but it’s still making me use my GH1 again"

And I think that is a good point. I think the reason why many people (including myself) choose the Canon's over the GH1 in the first place was the aesthetics. The Canon's renders light and colors in a very, very pleasing way. Perhaps it's because of the low light capabilities of the Canon, but the colors and the image from the Canons just feel deeper and richer than the GH1 (even the hacked version). For my tastes, even the RED with all it's bone crushing pixel abilities, just does not render colors in as eye pleasing or vivid a manner as the Canons do. From what I've seen the GH1 tends to have a cooler palette, while the Canon's tend to have the warmer palette. My personal choice is warmer colors, but others might like the GH1 aesthetic better.

When you first look at an image, you don't initially pay attention to the pixel detail as you do to the colors and the intangibles. The aesthetics of the Canons are just really nice, and that's why so many of my work colleagues were just floored by the image when they first saw it. It was probably because of this initial reaction that cause people to say that the 7D is better than the RED (which it's not), but it is aesthetically different. I think the GH1 and RED's image is technically more sound, I don't think colors are their strongest point, at least for my needs..

This has little to do with the cameras and more about people who use them. Canons render color HORRIBLY in comparison to Nikon and Panasonic. You'd be the first person I've read that thinks that orange skin coming out of Canon cams is beautiful. Hehehe. I'm teasing ya.

But as far as cool and warm looks, that's glass and user defined. Especially when you bring RED into the equation: it doesn't even have a "look" until you designate it as so in post.

No comment on which camera is better. >:] Hahahah just messin'.

Gosh guys, you are hard. I had to go out and take both cameras in tow again :). This time I used f2.8 24-70 lens for Canon (for those who still believe that 550D kit lens is somehow affecting the detail). Panny is using kit 14-140 lens with aspherical glass.

I dialed down sharpness and NR to minimum on Panny in order to get rid of eventual sharpening. Both cameras were using ISO 100. Aperture was 11 on both. Canon used "Standard" style, so did Panny. Panny average bitrate was less than half of Canon. I used "C" setting for AVCHD bitrate on GH1.

GH13 (1080p25 18Mbit average bitrate):

550D (1080p25 44Mbit average bitrate):

P.S. I noticed that frame-grabber rescaled Canon image from 1080 to 1094 on first example which may have affected the detail. That is now resolved (I used another grabber). Images above are both 1920x1080, ungraded frame grabs.

Good thing there's a swear filter on DVXUser. That 28-70/2.8 is pretty much a go-to Zoom as well.

That's what I was saying this ENTIRE time. The GH13 is PLENTY capable of an incredibly detailed and sharp image without artificial sharpening. That still is PROOF.

Thanks for doing this. Good grief, GH13 is KILLING it.

That looks much better, especially with sharpness and NR dialed down on GH13. It looks pretty fantastic and is much more detailed then the T2i.

Agreed. Well...not that anyone has any choice, the footage speaks for itself, and Malcolm Reynolds is sitting there with his gun drawn just daring me to disagree. Best mod avatar ever.

wow- someone must do a synopsis ´cause if there´s that much detail difference then alot of people will be buying hacked gh1´s - it´s hard to believe

any chance panasonic will officialize the firmware ? I bet they´re doing their own resolution tests !
