...what if folks made it worth his while?![]()
Grunf, what were the settings you were shooting at for both cameras?

Same place, both shot with tripod. No post-grading, just frame-grab.
GH1 looks good, but it's really only useful to compare if you try and match settings between both cameras. The 550D shot is really washed out. You need to either lower the contrast on the GH13, or up the contrast on the 550D. Because low contrast tends to hide detail while crushed blacks gives the appearance of sharpness.
Even if the Gh1 shot is more crushed the dynamic range is still better....look at the clouds! Wowz!
I don't doubt that the GH1 has the better resolution, but what some of you are forgetting is that aesthetics are an equally important part of the equation, and you have to choose what fits your aesthetics. Sorry to sound like a Philip Bloom whore, since I already quote him once in this thread, but he makes a good point. When asked if he's switching to the GH1, he said: "not for me as it doesn’t have the aesthetic or the low light of the Canons….especially the 5Dmkii but it’s still making me use my GH1 again"
And I think that is a good point. I think the reason why many people (including myself) choose the Canon's over the GH1 in the first place was the aesthetics. The Canon's renders light and colors in a very, very pleasing way. Perhaps it's because of the low light capabilities of the Canon, but the colors and the image from the Canons just feel deeper and richer than the GH1 (even the hacked version). For my tastes, even the RED with all it's bone crushing pixel abilities, just does not render colors in as eye pleasing or vivid a manner as the Canons do. From what I've seen the GH1 tends to have a cooler palette, while the Canon's tend to have the warmer palette. My personal choice is warmer colors, but others might like the GH1 aesthetic better.
When you first look at an image, you don't initially pay attention to the pixel detail as you do to the colors and the intangibles. The aesthetics of the Canons are just really nice, and that's why so many of my work colleagues were just floored by the image when they first saw it. It was probably because of this initial reaction that cause people to say that the 7D is better than the RED (which it's not), but it is aesthetically different. I think the GH1 and RED's image is technically more sound, I don't think colors are their strongest point, at least for my needs..
Gosh guys, you are hard. I had to go out and take both cameras in tow again. This time I used f2.8 24-70 lens for Canon (for those who still believe that 550D kit lens is somehow affecting the detail). Panny is using kit 14-140 lens with aspherical glass.
I dialed down sharpness and NR to minimum on Panny in order to get rid of eventual sharpening. Both cameras were using ISO 100. Aperture was 11 on both. Canon used "Standard" style, so did Panny. Panny average bitrate was less than half of Canon. I used "C" setting for AVCHD bitrate on GH1.
GH13 (1080p25 18Mbit average bitrate):

550D (1080p25 44Mbit average bitrate):

P.S. I noticed that frame-grabber rescaled Canon image from 1080 to 1094 on first example which may have affected the detail. That is now resolved (I used another grabber). Images above are both 1920x1080, ungraded frame grabs.

That looks much better, especially with sharpness and NR dialed down on GH13. It looks pretty fantastic and is much more detailed then the T2i.
