2:35 Aspect Ratio?

This may have been asked and answered already, I couldn't find the answer.
Will Red be able to record a 2:35 or 2:37 aspect ratio like the Viper?

or 1 : 2.39 as it seems to be..

2.35 was used until to 70's though the wider format is known or as 2.35 or as 2.40..

i also didn't know but the experts had spoken..

Reportedly it will have customizable frame lines. Set your frame lines where you want them and go for it. Will it letterbox for you? Who knows - worst case scenario just shoot a framing chart.

one note: if you are interested in shooting 2:40 anamorphic, the Red's sensor height (not width) presents a problem. You need full academy app height to capture the complete anamoric squished image.

If you only want to crop down s35 1:77 to yeild 2:40, then you're fine...albiet using a smaller portion of the available image. But it won't look like StarWars, Raiders, Alien, BladeRunner (etc.) or any of the the other epics that were shot in anamorphic widescreen....which has a very particular look.

Anamorphic isn't an option with Red. Just frame for 2.35 and crop in post. There is more than enough resolution that you aren't disadvantaging yourself by losing some screen real estate. They have also made mention of the fact that the viewfinder will have 2.35 markings available, with the possibility of being able to import an overlay of whatever aspect ratio you personally desire. Things are good.

To address the original question:
The Viper uses vertical pixel binning to get a true anamorphic 1080p image off the CCD's.
This is not possible with a bayer type sensor, but when shooting scaled 1080p RGB with the RED it should be pretty easy to implement a different scaling to the x and y axis to get an anamorphic 1080p image directly from the HD-SDI on the camera.
When you shoot in 4k RAW it will just be a matter of cropping, and you then have the added benefit to be able to adjust the framing vertically in post.

just shoot anamorphic lenses

just shoot anamorphic lenses

in 35mm, scope is anamorphically squeezed onto a regular 35mm neg...just shoot anamorphic 35mm lenses and have the monitor/software show you correct aspect ratio. or is that too simple a solution?

Heres a question, Will shooting with an anamorphic lens, using up the entire sensors realestate for data, give you a better picture even though the image is squashed back down anyway? I would assume so considering its using more pixels hence finer pixel density and detail.

The anamorphic camera negative is something like 21.96 x 18.9.
The mysterium sensor is 24.4 x 13.7.
So shooting using the full sensor would probably vignette in the sides and boast a very wide format.
If you would like to retain the 1:2.39 format you would have to crop the sides so you are down to to 16.17x13.7.

PS. just crop to whatever and be happy that Lucas has nothing on you ! well except lots of money and maybe more talent.

ey, what's stopping you from shooting with a anamorphic lens and then unsqueeze it, and crop it to your preffered AR?

or maybe an anamorphic preset (made for the anamorphic lens I mean, not substituting it) that will do that for you, giving you a unsqueezed image in the viewfinder with the necessary guidelines?

that would give you those lovely anamorphic lenseflares that we all love and all that, or am I wrong?

We all love anamorphic lens flares! Especially the nice blue streaks you get in night shots from flying overhead helicopter search lights!

Actually, I vastly prefer the look of traditional lenses.

Normal Lenses make Baby MichealBay cry.

LOL!

Although the only movies he actually shot with Anamorphic lenses are Armageddon and The island.

Cool. Is this something the Red team has commented on? Or is it just speculations amongst us forum-gentlemen? How does it work exactly. You can just make some kinda alpha layer image in photoshop or something?
