I think about the humongatron (URSA) from time to time.... But thats a completely n't different beast....
Wouldn't it be perfect to continue the 1DC platform, but this may be a one of a kind...

Yes, the URSA that NorBro mentions is better, actually - because it has RAW. I should have said "it's easily the best small 4K camera out there in the medium to low price-range!" There are a bunch of DSLR-sized 4K cameras that have come out since the 1DC appeared and none of them come close to its 4K. For me, it's the best choice because it's so inconspicuous.

Hey can I add my voice to this thread? Just jumped on the 1DC train a few years late but wow, I'm in love. One thing that I've found confusing is that there doesn't seem to be an official Canon LUT for the 1DC C-Log. Has anyone found a LUT that works for them and produces a neutral and natural image? I've created my own based on a C300 LUT but I'm curious to know how much better a specialised 1DC LUT would be..?

Clog on C series is exactly the same.

BM is hell for high ISO

I am waiting to see if the 4.6K sensor with 15 stops do any better. ( hope the 15stop will be usable at ISO1600)

I would have loved to see some shots taken in early morning and/or late evening soft light. Also, a polariser would have helped in some of the shots where the light was close to 90 degrees from the sides.

This is evening

Really? That's a pity. I must say, the 1DC is strong in low light. It's just a pity that it's MJPEG and not RAW - but then again, I don't mind that too much, as it's intra-frame as opposed to the crazy inter-frame, which I cannot tolerate.

The 1DC in above 800 ISO is a whole different league of quality vs the Ursa 4.6K.

The ursa 4.6K senaor shares similar lowlight performance to the original 2.5K Blackmagic.

These are two very different cameras, one is a small, stills, weather/war resistent SLR that records 4K to CF cards at 12800 with a small battery in the grip, the other is a shoulder camera, no stills, V-Lock battery and rails, needs studio lighting, shooting enormous raw files to expensive CFast 2.0 media.

Both great cameras for their field but I don't see them in rivalry at all. A completely different camera type and shooting environment.

The closest and only rival to the 1Dc is the Sony A7s when coupled with the Atonos shogun, as both are quite small lowlight beasts, 4K and stills and work with small-ish codecs and cheap media, and cost similarly, these find a similar environement.

1DC image still kicks its behind in image though from every single test I've seen. No competetion in colours or organic/filmic look to the detail. But the A7s 4K is no a
slouch either with a bit of careful grading,

I don't think there are other rivals. Canon are not pressed to get a successor soon. I think it's going to stay for a very long time, well into the last age of the 1DX MKII era. Probably a one of a kind concept even with no successors as they shift 4K/Clog to their DSLR lines and to the Cinema line. Makes sense.

C-Log on the 1Dc is in fact a bit flatter compared to C300 log and it's unfortunate that Canon have not released a LUT specifically for the 1Dc.
There's an effective LUT for viewing 1Dc log footage included in EOS Movie Utility 1.3 but it can't be accessed for use with NLEs.

I mostly grade under a Wide DR LUT that I downloaded from AbelCine website. It seems a lot better than using C-Log to Rec 709 LUT. There are a number of versions for different NLEs.

I've owned a 1Dc for a couple of years and love the image but still find nailing exposure with log challenging in some situations. Like a few other 1Dc owners, I've tried contacting Canon to request a
waveform feature or at least a histogram that stays on for recording to be included in a future firmware update but have no idea if the message gets through to anyone at Canon who might have influence with this.

it's not flatter, it's due to the use of 0-255 full range value.

The only actual difference is when shooting 4K, colour matrix is BT.601 intead of BT.709, there is a very slight colour bias in green.

The URSA doesn't need to be a shoulder camera or have rails or require studio lighting, and ProRes is absolutely amazing for relatively inexpensive/dropping-in-price CFAST 2.0 cards. But I do agree they aren't competitors.

Yes forgot to mention log only appears slightly flatter than c300 log in 4K mode. I've noticed 1080 footage recorded via HDMI (from 4K log) has more contrast which makes me wonder if using waveform via HDMI would be accurate.

Yeah, I think the 1DC is peerless really, isn't it? The only way to equal or beat its image, is with larger cameras that often mean a crew and permits and lights. I love its size and the lack of moving parts, lack of fans. But, paradoxically, also its ruggedness and weight and weather-sealing! It's as if the research and experience that went into the 1DX and made it one of the best still cameras in the world has really benefitted the 1DC (I know it's the same camera in many respects) in ways the C100-500 and many other cameras lack. It's the only small 4K camera that delivers real 4K, at the end of the day and all the other 4K tests I've seen are very 'old video' looking, flat and a lot like cheap early HD - which seemed like lower resoiution blown up.

Well, no, you don't have to place it on your shoulder - you can hold it some other way or not hold it at all - but the size and shape is such that if you are holding the camera, the shoulder becomes a likely and constant ally!

The larger 4K cameras are great, but you can't run into a war with them as easily and the smaller cameras which can be dragged into a war will either perish or merely yield an inferior, DSLR-image!

The 1DC balances the strength of both markets.

So I've always wanted a 1DC. Right now I have a C100M2 and a 5DM3 as a backup. Is the 1DC still a viable camera since it's 3 year old tech? Also, anyone know how it matches with the C100(M2)? I'm assuming CLOG to CLOG should be pretty perfect.

Thanks.

Yes I'm amazed Canon don't seem to have ever released a proper LUT for the 1DC as it's C-Log is certainly different from the C300 to my eyes. Incredible given the price of the camera.

Well as I say I think the C-Log on the 1DC is pretty unique in that it doesn't look quite like any of the other cameras. I picked one up second hand recently and I can tell you that the technology does feel dated in terms of features and codec, but the picture is absolutely stunning. You make a trade off for convenience versus picture quality with this camera.

In my view it's been worth it coming from Sony cameras which are feature packed but can lack a bit of magic in the colour science sometimes. I still miss features like peaking and zebras and EVFs though. Adding an external monitor to the 1DC for run and gun scenarios is a real pain.

The 1DC still works. In India, most of the lower budget feature films and advt films are shot using the 1DC. That 4K files still look great and the S35 HD files are great.

If your clients can afford the latest and greatest than you can always remain in the tech rat race. Else, you can always pick a 1DC and do good work.
