Yes, a little talked about, but great feature.

Since I've come from 5Dmk3 FF I always felt a bit cramped at S35. I know that doesn't make sense since it has been the golden standard for so long. But that doesn't change the fact... Also happy with the 4k coverage.

That's also one of the benefits of going 4k-->external HD to Atomos. I don't do that personally, but it would be on the benefits list.

So yesterday, after posting, I to do some random shooting while spending time with the relatives. I really enjoy being able to shoot family in 4K.

(^image above is ff35 1920X1080 IPB)

^iso3200 4k (the kind of exposure C-log seems to like, soft and high contrast.)

^iso3200 4K (slightly underexposed, so shadows suffer a bit, and blocky/noisy in the dark areas.)

(^image above is ff35 1920X1080 IPB, iso800)

iso1600 4K as long as you don't clip, c-log can handle the brightness very well.

most of these were edited in the same way video is, but is nice to be able to pull a still and edit it like a photo when needed.

What lens are you using? 35L ?

ff35 HD IPB

gradient - c-log w/ grade
Banding on gradient patterns show up more when the curve adjust is not a natural balanced "S" curve. In this shot above, I kept the curve more natural, not fighting the natural curve of c-log. So, the any banding effect is less apparent. It also helps that the gradient on the ceiling has greater degrees of light and dark. I've started playing around with filmconvert, but trying to find a good balance of noise. I prefer clean images for the most part. Banding seems to occur more easily in low contrast shadows, when contrast is added - I assume this is in part due to compression, since the shadows tend to be more blocky anyway. A good trade off perhaps, since the mids and highlights are more important. C-log already has a nice curve, so I do not make changes to it the way I do to other default picture styles.

Ok, so I never ended up buying filmconvert. seems to do great things for the film look, but I have generally disliked the look of grain on digital footage. Just look at any 5d footage with grain added arbitrarily: odd... clippy burned highlights with grainy shadows. Whenever I think I can go back to a 5d or 60D, I can't . And then I come out with a new appreciation for the 1D-C.

4K C-log, filmvconvert to proress444, CC to add slight contrast.

4K - Zeiss Z35mm f2 - C-Log and alternate grades - low contrast scene

Here are some screen shots from the camera info.

I was setting up a photo and went to live view for additional accuracy focussing, and figured I'd grab a couple seconds of video.

^4K video clip, C-LOG is underexposed

Here is a still from the photo directly after leaving live view, no settings changed:

^raw/jpeg still, neutral picture style, no settings changed from 4K C-Log above, result is even ever so slightly over exposed.

And below is 4k exposed for C-Log:

^Exposed for C-Log @F2.0 (wide open)
Time stamps show these were all pretty close in time, in particular the top two, which are less than 10 seconds apart.

Camera settings were the same for these shots, just changed the lens aperture.

ISO1600 is insanely clean.

nice shot and cute boy!

You can overexpose C-log a little bit in this type of scene because it's foggy which makes light ratio is relatively small.

Thanks!

Yeah, this one was a quick 4K clip shot right before taking a picture, and so was exposed differently. (I went ahead and posted the on-camera histogram shots above^) Just so turned out to be one of the better shots, and I was pleasantly surprised it could handle such an extreme grade.

I can't imagine the rotoscoping to get this look in video, the eyes would be a pain to track. But I did a grade semi inspired by Bruno Delbonnel's latest film, and something from LOTR.

^4K 1DC

Great images James lovely stuff.

One of my favourite features of the camera (besides 4k and c-log obviously) has been been able to change the sensor size in HD. I mainly stick to the s35 for extra sharpness but on a project last week in a cramp sound recording studio i just kept jumping from s35 to FF when I needed to go wider rather than changing lenses (24-70mm 2.8 L), plus also been able to get some slow mo at the same time. Also FF has become my ClassicSoft filter on some shoots as it has a very pleasant beauty feel to the skin particularly for CU women while still been sharp. Plus changing between the two to enhance the depth of field for different shots has been great.

I have found that recording externally in 4k really takes care of the compression artefact and banding that is found in the MJPG but I only use it on shoots that don't require 4k and were I find the need to carry the added gear/weight.

Has anyone noticed the over-heating warning sign coming on while shooting? It came on once for me when recording simultaneously externally/internally mirroring the lcd, it wasn't a hot set or day but after about 2-3 hrs started getting the warning sign so turned it off to cool down. It came on once again soon after so I let the camera rest a bit longer and didn't get the warning again after that.

Cheers guys keep up the great posts!

BTW if anyone is interested I am putting up my Letus Cinema Master Series rig for the 1DC on ebay.

Yeah, the ff35 is a bit like a built in beauty filter, haha. Never thought of it that way, but so true, because it looks great in that way. There are pros to everything.

I've never experienced over heating, but my shooting style is in bursts. And not usually leaving live view up for other onset when not shooting. Though I have been in some conditions were other cameras would have.

Curious what rig you're switching/goingback to? I've been using a custom one, just because no one makes them the way I like to shoot.

James have you done any tests with C-Log saturation all the way down? i see you were using -2, but I had a feeling that -4 might be better for avoiding banding issues and more compression friendly.
