C500: 1D-C Users

That is the C300. I am talking about C-Log on the 1D-C only. And only how it compares to the raw sensor data at the same exposure value settings. (EDIT: sorry, I probably shouldn't talking about 'exposure', since I am more so talking about shadows and highlights clipping. The only reason I am referring to it as exposure, is because it is the same camera, and I am getting a similar range in raw, picture styles, and c-log, just very different clipping points on C-log. So, maybe middle grey ends up being about the same, but shadows and highlights clipping are different by at least a stop.)

(I took this shot vertically, so the video image looks rotated, while the raw remains vertical)

I am not really talking about middle grey anyways, I am talking more about highlight vs shadow retention and where the camera clips in different settings....

1.)
C-log clips/crushes the shadows earlier at the same exposure settings, than any other picture style, by at least a stop.

2.)
C-log in turn, despite losing some shadow detail, retains highlight information that does not exist in the raw file, or any other picture style, at the same exposure settings.

So, if these were two different cameras, I wouldn't really have started saying 'underexposure', but since this is the same camera, at least within itself, it is doing some underexposure to get the end results. (but if these were film stocks, I would still rate them at different asa, since C-Log is at least a stop slower than the raw still, I just want to get away from the LUT explanation, which does not address the very real need for additional light in C-Log.) (Also, I am not trying to paint it as a 'defect', but as a way the camera behaves. Ignoring the fact that C-Log clips the shadows earlier, is not prudent.)

C-Log is giving more apparent DR than Neutral 0,-2,-2,0, as would be assumed.

Neutral is about a stop better in actual shadow detail, and C-log is about 2stops better in the highlights. (rough estimates) I found if I am exposing for the shadows, C-Log needs to open up a stop to get the same detail. While going the other way around, Neutral needs to stop down at least a stop to get similar highlights to C-Log.

So, that makes me want to use C-log, however, there are times I don't want to, and don't need to, but would love it to have the same color palette as C-Log, so that they can play nicer in post. Anybody know best way to get Canon's ear on this?

I emailed Canon about making a picture style with the same base color palette as clog, but that can be edited in the picture style editor. As always, these things are driven by demand. I love clog, but not always loving the banding. If you love you 1dc can you consider sending and email to them asking for updates like this?

Can I suggest we amend the title of this thread to "Only Three 1D-C Users?" :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
You get your fourth user here:laugh: I do not understand how I can miss this thread
Happy to meet you James, Marvin, Andree

We seems to be the only few self-employed guys around the world using the 1DC. Canon just do not provide enough support(LUT in the right format, plugins) or information to let users have a good start.

Hi! Welcome!

Hey guys! user #5 here :). I really wish we could get a 1DC sub category.

I have been exposing about 1/2 stop to 1 stop over for most things I shoot in CLOG.
James...I met with the 1DC engineering team at NAB. I will forward your suggestions from your posts to them. Who knows...maybe they will listen :)

I am going to edit The first post to include a firmware update wish list. My list isn't long.

-Waveform during record
-Picture style with C-Log color palette, that can be edited in the Canon Picture Style Editor
-More features added to button customization (ie C user settings toggle assignable to any user button)

That's it. And while I could wish for raw, and other things, we will see.

Welcome!

Yeah, having its own sub-category is important. The 1dc should be viewed as a cinema camera.

I love the idea of a small light weight silent cinema camera with good battery life. So, hopefully Canon is up to the challenge of following through with the marketing and branding language of the Cinema badge. Because as of now, it is a 1dx-4k. Needs better exposure tools to be on par with other pro video cameras. I know programing a waveform may mot be their top priority, but would actually make the 1dc a real video camera at least.

I'll keep fingers crossed for practical updates. Thanks for forwarding on thhe suggestions! They say it is based on demand, so the more sources they hear from, the better! =)

I want
-Zebra and peek for focus!!!!!
-start/stop of video recording on the WFT or give me a app like the 6D to do that.

Yes I live in HK

Just wonder if you guys have send in the 1DC for the repair.

If you do take high fps stills you better go quickly, seems to solve the dirty sensor(grease splatting on the sensor) problem too. I heard discussions from other forum, Canon seems to change the lubricant when you take them in and new grease do not splat as much.

My 1DC started having focus problem after 50K px mirror sent it in May before the recall.

Actually you CAN trigger video recording by using the WFT-E6 unit, as well as adjusting exposure settings and live preview (2-3fps), the same as 1D X.

I will add those. Thanks! (i'll also list work arounds and solutions/compromises below the list, in case there are clever things that get missed)

My main requests that I already passed along were:

1. Playback over HDMI when in mirroring. (having to disable mirroring to give your director playback on monitor is the absolute biggest pain in the butt with this camera!!)
2. Overlays available over hdmi when in mirroring
3. Peaking
4. Waveform
5. 4K 30p (or 60p if possible...but at least 30p would give us a tad slomo at full rez)
6. Better implementation of the WFT-E6...more like C300. I rented one for a pilot I shot with the camera and gave up on it during day 1...too finicky for my taste..maybe better with new firmware?? this was just before NAB

Updated. After a week or so, I will probably start a poll and see what features are most desired. (I also wish overlays were available when mirroring!)

Whenever you are writing to Canon regarding the 1D-C, copy paste the firmware wish list to the email, if you can. While we know they read forums, a forum post is not exactly "asking".
