350 + NanoFlash almost = 700

Hey Ned,

A review on Alister Chapman's blog stated that the new PMW-350 actually looked better than his PDW-700 with the Nano Flash.

I thought I was finished buying things for a while and now this comes out!

My HPX-500 might see the marketplace if the audio is as strong.

Although going to an all-CMOS lineup is sort of a brave new world.

Just read about a price of about US$20K for the new 350. I think this is a bit high given it is crippled internally to 35Mbps (as a 2/3" unit it should at least have 50Mbps 4:2:2 like the other 2/3" 700/800). It should be about US$15. It might get around $19K street price but I think too many are going to find this one just a bit to much. $6K EX1 to $20K 350 is a big financial leap for many.

They could well be leaving space for a EX5 to fit in that US$12K price range which would basically be the 1/2" version of this 350.

Is that $20k price with or without lens?

But does a PDW800 cost about the same as a DSR500 did? They are similar level cameras of their times.

ignoring the fact that 1/2" type chips are closer to 1/3" physically because its all relative in the end the proof is more about maths, but there is a 1/2-1/3 = 1/6" difference between a 1/3" & 1/2". 1/6" is 50% of the 1/3", BUT, there is the same 2/3-1/2=1/6" difference between a 1/2" and 2/3", and 1/6" is only 33% increase on a 1/2". In simple terms, the 1/6" increase is a bigger % increase from 1/3" than from 1/2", as I said origonally. Increaseing a 1/2" sensor by 50% would make it 3/4" not 2/3"?

Your point is that 1/3 to 1/2 is a bigger jump in surface area than 1/2 to 2/3 which is correct. But since surface area increases as the square of length or width, the jump from 1/2 to 2/3 would be a 78% increase in surface area, not 50%, and increasing a 1/2" sensor by 50% would be more like a 5/8".

does anyone think there might be another upgrade charge to get the multiple frame rates and the better on-off switch? hell even a trade in upgrade of $600-700 to make it a R model?

Thanks. I'll have to agree with Guy that a $12k-$15k price would be more palatable, especially for a 35mbps 4:2:0 camera. $20k is a big gap up from the EX1 at $6k and Ex3 at $8k.

But I guess when compared to the PDW700 at $30k for the body only, it's a bargain. Although the PDW700 has CCD sensors, and 50mbps 4:2:2 codec, the pricing may override these considerations. I can see TV stations jumping on PMW350, especially since they may view 35mbps as an advantage (less storage).

I disagree. We were in the same pinch a few years ago. When every company started to make their own films and photos, because the cameras got affordable (DSLRs, Camcorders) it looked like professionals were going to fall like flies. At least in my market.

But the companies realized there is more to it than hardware and came back. All photgraphers and videographers I know are very busy again, despite falling hardware prices.

I can't say that my experience correlates with yours at all. All I've gotten on wedding jobs for the past two years is a lot of couples 'kicking the tires' and no followups. Apparently they want cheap, or to have friends do the video.
Business has sunk like a stone in a lake. Granted, the only jobs I've gotten are higher end ones, because the clients needed a pro-level camera and shooter, but the general consumer has gone DiY with video, due to the cheap camcorders out there.

Perhaps try doing production for local TV ads? I am getting plenty of business. I just made up a rate sheet (after finding out what they usually pay - around here 350.00) and drop it off with my card that has a link to my work on a youtube page. 350.00 for maybe 6 hours work ain't bad. Check my signature for examples. I think a wedding is a lot of work, and includes the possibility to blow it because there is no second take. All I need is one cam, stock music, and I do the VO. I have yet to need lights for a simple 30 of a local business.

Did anyone actually get the announcement that is supposed to come out today? I signed up and have not got it. I checked my spam folder too.

$350??? Are you nuts? This is why the industry is in the crapper.
You're giving away your talent.
You ads are better than most- but only 6 hours of work? shoot and edit? really?
You have some fancy photoshop cut outs there.
More power to you if 6 hours is all it takes- but really you should get at least a grand.
(sorry to hijack thread)

As to the thread topic- nice refined features- but I don't see anything new on this EX1R that I need.
expected more.

I'm not nuts I'm pissed! I work, half time now, at a multimedia agency doing video for 15 bones an hour, and I do the work you see. My boss is running the business into the ground so he cut me to half time. But now I am doing the same ads for 350.00 an an independent. The 6 hours is for a "simple" 30 spot with store shots, VO & music bed. I charge 500 for motion graphics. Sorry to hijack too, but it must be said that you do what the market will bare. We started out tryig to charge 1,000.00 and NOBODY ever bought an ad because Suddenlink offers them for 350 and Fox offers them for 250.00. They are shitty ads but cheap, so business take what they get. It's about air time for local TV. BUT since I'm used to earning 100.00 a day after tax at full time, getting 350.00 for 6 hrs work is like budda... Especially since I'm used to getting about 85 for that through work. Now people are hearing about me and I am doing well. THANKS EX1!

I'm doing this in Eureka Ca, where the economy is depressed.

Sorry again.

Now who got that announcement email? I didn't.

Chad

I'm a little dissappointed, though I don't really have any right to be.

I was hoping for a native 4:2:2 camera (without having to use a nanoflash) and 60fps (okay 120 - hey a man can dream) at 1080p.

... there's always next year I guess.

Around here, the production is FREE with the paid air time. The TV stations throw it in as an added perk. Effectively cuts us outsiders out of the gravy train.
