HVX 200 not reading 16gb P2 - Urgent.

hi guys,

i'm currently in australia with a hvx200, 16gb card and a p2 store,

nothing happens when i put the card into the camera, it was working perfect yesterday, i just get the flashing p2 icon in the upper left corner.

there are no options to format the card on the camera as it does not read the p2 card.

i was shooting with the camera yesterday and it was working perfectly fine, the p2 card was being read in the p2 store and i was able to transfer footage fine,

i figured since it wasn't being read in the camera i'd try to format the card in the p2 store. i held in the p2c button hit start and the orange lights would flash for about 2-3 seconds and then stop (i imagine since there was little footage on the card it wouldn't take very long). i checked the content folder and it appears to be empty and formatted but the hvx isn't accepting it.

both the p2store and the camera were updated from the factory to work the the 16gb card, and i have had no problems until now.

i'm working on a 12"powerbook g4 running 10.4.10

any help would be greaty appreciated as iam in quite a bind right now.
thanks!

Aaron

from what i know you can only reformat from a P2 Device, like a camera or P2Store.

does anyone know any different?

i just recently found that putting the hvx into MCR mode then 1394 device mode (firewire hooked upto a powerbook g4) i recieved a blinking error on the lcd.
"SYSTEM ERROR
P2 MICON ERROR"

i'm in the middle of googling it and trying to figure it out.
if anyone has any ideas ... lemme know. any information regarding this would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

thanks in advance,
aaron

hey guys,

again still trying to trouble shoot my camera not reading the p2 card,
i've just read this thread here
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=106391&page=2

and its sounds similar to me, i had used the camera for about a week or so just fine and then it worked the first today on my trip to australia and now its not working.

i've recieved the System Error P2 Micon Error when I put the camera into firewire mode. this is the only error i get.... when a P2 card its put into the camera the lamps do not flash, only the p2 icon on the top left of the lcd tells me there is not card in the camera.

the P2 card comes up fine when put into a P2 Store and I was able to get all the footage that I had off of it.

i've also tried putting a new SD card into the SD slot in hopes of loading default setting but it isn't reading the SD card either.

i'm in somewhat of a tricky position, i'm in australia in a remote ski resort for the remainder of the week and then i goto melbourne for a night and then fly to sydney and then off to Chile. so i'm basically on a 25 day shoot with a camera that isn't recognizing the P2 Card,

there is another filmer here that i'm going to try to meet up with to try to trouble shoot this problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks again,
-aaron

Remove all cards, both P2 cards and SD cards. Turn the power off, then turn it back on. Go into 1394 Device mode. Then plug the card in, and see what happens.

If you still get the problem, verify your HVX's firmware version -- it should be 4.06. If it's not, update the firmware.

If you still have the problem, download the P2 Card Checker program and run that.

Frankly I suspect your camera's firmware must not be quite right -- if the card works fine in the P2 Store, then I suspect the camera needs updating.

Good luck!

Curious, my 16GB card has been acting the same way. Is it a card or firmware issue. Sometimes it seems to work fine others it gives me the error. Any ideas? Software? Bad firmware update?

hey barry,

just turned the camera on, then it into 1394 device mode, and "1394 device" flashed white a couple times and then went to the red "System Error P2 Micon Error", then tried the same with but popped the card int when i threw in into 1392 device mode.

i checked out the P2 Card checker but i'm on a mac (powerbook g4), is there any thing for the mac?

would i even be able to update the firmware for the camera without using an SD Card, because it seems as thought its telling me theres no SD card in the camera even when i put one in...

thanks again for the feedback,
i'm really in a bad situation here...

thanks again,
aaron

The firmware is 4.06, i tired putting an SD Card in just to format it from the MCR Menu Screen and it didn't recognize it. I've tried with other SD Cards too and its not "seeing" any of them.

and again, maybe i'll see if someone has a PC that i can load that checker program onto...

is there a way to update the firmware without an SD Card?
i think i might be hooped.

thanks again,

Thanks for linking me to this thread, Aaron.

Right off the bat, in my situation, I didn't even get the flashing p2 icon in the upper left corner. There was NO recognition of a P2 card whatsoever. I wish I had more to offer.

Barry's advice sounds like the best you're likely to get outside of walking into a repair center.

BTW, I puchased my camera on 7-17-07 after a long wait. I heard this was the first batch after the rumored eathquake in Japan. Any truth to this or just rumor?

Bill

The HVX200 can't see SDHC cards, if I'm not mistaken, so make sure you're using a regular SD card.

There is no way to update the firmware without using an SD card. Well, there is a way, you can send it in to your Panasonic service center and have them do it, but they'll use an SD card and they'll charge you for the service too.

If you suspect your P2 card may be bad, run the "simple checker" program. Find someone with a PC to help you out with that if you need to. Or try the card in someone else's HVX200. Take it down to your dealer if you have a local dealer. But narrow down what's causing the problem, isolate each piece of equipment (HVX, P2 card, SD card) and see where the problem's coming from.

What's the firmware version of your HVX?

so the lcd didn't flash that you had no P2 Card? Cause i get that... but the lamps at the back of the camera do nothing and its not able to read any SD cards that i've tried.

i purchased my camera on august 10/2007.

i'll see if i can get P2 Checker onto a PC and i should for sure be able to throw the card in someone else HVX here.

i imagine i'll throw the card into a P2 Store on PC with PCMCIA slot and run the P2 Checker?

My only problem is that I'm trying to salvage this current shoot Iam on by shooting to Tape and my schedule has me shooting up until the last day, then I leave for Chile, where I'd really like to be shooting HD, I guess I'll have to see if I can cut this one a few days early to send the camera to Panasonic Australia, any idea on the run around time for this?

P2 Simple Checker doesn't support 16GB cards yet -- at least it didn't the last time I checked.

My guess is that it sounds like it could be something going on with your camera...

But, you need to eliminate other possibilities like barry said. Check the card on another camera, check the sd card in your computer... etc.

Perhaps using the reset option on your camera might be worth trying...

yeah, that was one of the first things i tried (reset button). and it didn't seem to help.

i;ve contacted john barry (repairs) and they think it was firmware
and panasonic aus thinks its the P2 Drive or something related to it and they might even have the NTSC part for it.

but they're not sure if they can repair it ontime before my flight and if not i'm trying to get a hold of someone at panasonic canada or the us.

thanks again for all the feedback guys!
if anyone would like to chime in, feel free....

took the camera into Pansonic in Melbourne,
replaced P2 Drive in camera and is now working just fine, (fingers crossed).

thanks to everyone for there help! and Sandro Ricci and Rob Myers at Panasonic Melbourne.
