Will definitely give that a go next time I film this weekend. If that works, is it ok to switch back to the STD 5 matrix using the white balance performed in the neutral scene file?
If you change the paint menus you should re-white balance. It won't make a difference everytime, but it is good practice.
Personally, I wouldn't use STD5 for anything except tightly controlled indoor lighting setups, and even then I will rarely use it. STD5 is basically rolling back to a Betacam-era gamma curve with a small dynamic range and a higher risk of blowing out highlights (and not in a nice way like some gammas.) But for indoor interviews and faces it can be good enough. But don't take my word for it, hook up the camera to a good monitor and take a couple of hours to experiment is the best way to find out what works best for YOU.
