64GB P2 Card announcment

i don't have an article to back this up, but based on conversations with a few people, fuji and panny p2 cards are actually produced at the same location(s).

a dp i rent from told me this. maybe someone with more direct insight can back this up.

I have herd that from several people, what would suck even more is if the Maxels are made at the same factory the Fuji's and Panny's are, that would pretty much wipe out the possibility of the price being more competitive.

Here's what we know: Panasonic reads and responds to views expressed on this forum.

Panasonic should be courting adoption of its media with a price break on the older cards. Here's their opportunity to encourage long format with P2 for the budget conscious buyer while still reaping plenty of reward from the larger budget productions. It would be unfortunate to see them "Blu-Ray" themselves to oblivion as other formats gain traction.

I would be curious to understand / learn what the difference is between non-competitive pricing versus price fixing?...

There was a very large price fixing settlement made last week against several LCD display manufacturers...

For long shoots such as an event, the P2 format may be cost ineffective.
Even though the Sony EX1 cost about a grand more, I believe that comes with the ability to use an adapter to run SD cards.

SD cards are very cheap, and actually then make the camera actually cheaper to get to running specs than the Panasonic P2 cameras

Wow! I´m officially impressed!

Now we can record a whooping 64 Minutes on one card.

Time to hug my Firestore (that does rwice as much for half of the price).

Well why wouldn't you just get the nanoFlash or FlashXDR then. It records from HD-SDI and can do the exact same thing onto a stronger media format. I just like how small P2 HD cameras are. I mean I love my HVX and loved playing with the HPX170. It's also a scalable format all the way up to the big HPX3700 and what not. So I say long live P2. If we all bought P2 cards... i'm sure the prices would drop. That's the ticket... let's joint buy 5000 64GB P2 cards and get a big price cut :) I think Panasonic would go for it.

Panny would laugh in your face, what kind of competition is it when the Fuji and Panny cards are made at the same factory?

Ich P2 is expensive but so what, so is everything... lol for the benefits we get, and the reliability of their workflow, quality of codec etc, im more than pleased.

Still though... just a bit cheaper hehe eh panny ;)

Unfortunately, this is a horse that won't run.

Should be approach Microsoft for restraint of trade for how much they charge for Windows or Vista. Or Apple?

Panasonic has long indicated there isn't alot of profit it p2 card manufacturing.

Jan has always been straightforward on these issues.

I'm disappointed, but there is no foundation for any restraint of trade issues.

In fact, I know of one person who has bought a Fuji card and none that have a Maxell card.

I've seen 16 GBs being offered for $600 and 32 GBs for as low as $1150.00 in the marketplace. These things don't wear out.

So your saying that Panasonic is making more profit on the camera itself rather then the cards? Thats like buying a brand new $30,000 car and the wheels make up half of the total cost. The big question is, how does 2 64g cards cost more than the camera?

Disappointed in deed. I already know a few production companies that are jumping on the sony bandwagon and their SxS technology. As much as I hated the idea, I too am about to take that route. After the EX-1, Panasonic has been running behind the competition in its prosumer division. Last time the Panasonic made me excited about their products, was the announcement of the HVX200. HPX170-HMC-100 good ideas, but not enough to compete in resolution with Sony. The overkill was this, P2 64gig and no price drop on older cards. This hurts, and so does the economy. Panasonic better have something up its sleeve that will justify the p2 price.

The cost to produce solid state memory is falling faster than it ever has before. These prices are hardly competitive and in less than a year will be considered pretty outrageous. I love the P2 workflow but if consumers can buy storage for considerably cheaper on some other camera system then they probably wont stop quite as long to consider a proprietary format this pricey.

I have several friends jumping ship to take advantege of the sony sd card adapter hack.

I think we will see a lot more of that in the future.

C'mon Jan. Really? Really?

I feel like I was penalized for being one of the early adopters--no free 16GB P2 card ever came my way; I had to pay $650 for a lousy 4GB card--and Panasonic never did anything to honor our advance faith in their bleeding edge product. Not even a discount on P2 purchases. Lame. And bad customer relations.

And now with this over-inflated pricing it looks like the only P2 card I'll ever own is my overpriced 4GB card.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon of ship jumpers. With all these new (and better ?) cameras, the game has changed and it no longer makes sense to invest pools of money into a technology with a economically questionable future. Yes, P2 will be around for years to come, but not for much longer in the indie community.

i'm def with most of you all regarding the bloated price of the P2 format. until they come down some, Panny will slowly, but surely, lose a large amount of their customer base.

fair price to me would be:

16gb - 400
32gb - 800
64gb - 1500

maybe some day...........

p.s. i wish you could have seen my girlfriend's face when i told her how much these cards are -- priceless.
