The moment after - by Cazcam

I was really impressed with the film. i don't know how you got the actress to be so revealing, but I think it's great. I can see the time theme here, because you have - the first time as well as a moment in time - which she will never forget. This was wonderfully shot, lit and well acted. The shots were really artistic and creative. There's probably at least a hundred different ways you could have shot this and it looks like you nailed it. You could really see how vulnerable she was and how he took advantage.

Wow! Keep doin' your thing.

lol at shooting guerrila style and then coming up with the most professional looking short ive seen till now. absolutely beautifully shot and framed. story and time theme are a little slim but still, great work!

Thank you guys for your comments. I really appreciate both positive and negative ones.

We wanted to tell a very small story. THis is a portrait of a moment. The seconds after the girl is left alone. The emptiness of that instant. Love and passion against the cold reality. That´s why it´s called the moment after. Because this is really about those seconds that pass after she is left alone.

Of course i can understand our story seems small compared with the powerfull O2, but i don´t think they are competing on the same league. It would be like putting together Sunshine against Lost in translation, they´re totally different things.

This is the most beautifully shot film I've seen in the fest. Looked stunning.

This was a very intimate piece and definitely felt like a small "moment" in time, and totally understood what you were going for. Pacing was great, which I find tough for short films. I really need to shoot a film in Spanish - the language is amazing and sounds so great on screen.

At the end, I felt like a nice long shot with her on the bed would really emphasize that critical moment after where she's left alone.

Other than that, beautiful work!

This movie WAS beautifully shot. I love the subtle use of light. What camera did you use...it looks like it might have been a RED. I was never really engaged by the story, not really sure that was the purpose of this film. I think you were shooting more at capturing a moment in time, which you succeeded in doing. This felt like a poignant vignette in a young woman's life. Nice movie!

I'm in awe of this camera work. The latitude is terrific and the focus pulls amazing. If this glass isn't cinema lenses then I'm turning in my eyeballs for refunds. Whoa, this is absolutely in my top three so far.

I disagree, I feel more often then not, that Danny Boyle, and Sofia Coppola are one in the same. ;)

But seriously this is an awesome film, and I think the fact that it is a moment and only a moment is poetic. You should tour the film fest circuit with this one.

The subtile light, focus pulling, camera movement, absolut minimalistic and as touching as brutal.

I´m speechless.

beautifully done. so subtle. It really captures that moment, really human. The camera work is exceptional. I thought I had my top three locked down and this changed that.

I am not a huge fan of nudity for nudities sake, but related to the context it worked out to be a well thought out and an intriguing aspect of the short. I too am not sure how it related to this specific competition but well done.

It is you that is in a higher league. O2 was nice - beautifully shot and the best production design by far - but you easily keep up with their ASC cinematographer and your acting is magnitudes greater. I think the story is fine, and the time theme is thin, but no thinner than almost every other entry that doesnt have to do with time travel.

Easily my favorite. And if you think it's for the nudity, I have only given 9s for two others. Survival and Four. I was saving the 10 spot for something better. The Moment After is that something better. My only 10.

And for the record, I only compare you to O2 because you brought it up. If you hadnt, I would never even imagined there to be a comparison.

TimeFest 2008: Cazcam is the one to beat. Well done. I cant wait to see what you deliver in the future.

Very nice erotic and aesthetic piece. The moment after, when he went out of the room, could have more expression, but this is only my personal taste! Lovely work!

This film was really stunning.

I didn't care for either of the characters even once. The guy seemed carelessly humping and the girl had no background so who cares if he deflowers her and then leaves? You need to make me feel the connection to the character instead of just pointing out something that happens sometimes in all of our lives.

I couldn't disagree more with that quote. How we make connections to a character is by recognizing what they are going through and seeing it in our own lives.

The acting was superb. You didn't need any screaming or crying to really feel something in this piece and I really felt for the heroine. The subtext, the unanswered questions, the way she just wanted a connection rather than sex by reaching up to kiss him...I really feel that this told the right amount of story for the time frame.

A beautiful, quiet film. First of its kind that I've seen in this contest. Great work!

Thanks again to all. Remember guys we´re talking about 3 minute shortfilms. We just wanted to put on the table an idea. An instant in time.
If you want to get deeper connections with a character, enjoy the 2 and a half hours of Forrest Gump.
I´ve always considered shortfilms and feature films a different show. Feature films are not shortfilms. Meaning we should not try to tell a 2 hours story in just 10 minutes. We should just try to tell a 10 minute story in 10 minutes. Or a 3 minutes story in 3 minutes. Sorry if this sounds as an excuse (which is not, just a clarification), but i just got creative writing. XD

OK, for those wanting to know a but about equipment.

This project was put together very quickly, "hey guys, do you feel like doing a micro-shortfilm tomorrow? We have to send it by sunday, so we´ve got to be quick".
"Sure, what´s the subject?"
"Time"
"Ok, let´s see what we can come with"
"Do we have a budget?"
"No, but we have a RED ONE here which is getting bored, and a couple of Master Primes that are getting dusty"
"What about lights?"
"What about using just 1 kinoflo? That´s enough for me. Framing and location are the basics."
"I´m on this!"

XD

nicely done. very quiet moment that was real and poignant. a very different take on time and the only one of its kind here. Cinematography was beautiful and the moments captured were subtle and gave off the raw emotion that was needed for this piece. It's an awesome character study with good acting all around.

10/10 for me for being so beautifully done.

Best looking movie of the Fest! Stunning really.
I wasn't a huge fan of the continued nudity but I'm not a prude either.

The theme was touched on and I get it... I wanted a bit more but such is life.
Fantastic piece of art here.

Cheers,

Mike

A really great film, this one. Beautiful lighting and composition, a very sure touch with the directing. I have to disagree with Susanne on the ending - I thought it fitted perfectly. Nothing in the film was overdone, everything was said with the minimum nuances, and I thought the ending gave the idea of emptiness very well: the girl seemed almost in a slight state of shock.

I have thought a little bit about the clock. My first thought was that many directors would have been tempted to put it in at the beginning as well as later on to show how quick their coupling was, and I think not putting it there was right: it would have taken away from the real subject of the film which was the "moment after". Having decided this, I then thought that maybe the clock was a bit superfluous and that it was really there only to satisfy the rules of Timefest (don't get me wrong, I think the film itself fulfills the theme of time perfectly well). But then I decided that including the clock as a symbolic element was perfectly justified. Then I noticed the time on the clock: 20.06. Just the time when the couple could have been starting on an evening out together, but instead he's off to see his friends. And I think this is just one example of how much food for thought there is in the tiny details of a film like this.

One last thing, and this is not a criticism: it is as, you point out, a 3 minute short, not a six or ten minute one. A moment in time that works extremely well. However, as such, it can't be expected to say the same as a longer film. This is the perfect lightweight entry, but a lightweight it remains.
