Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 Just Released

Then maybe it is my system. I have never succeeded in getting “Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames” to remove any frames from 720p60. Only Export works for me.

Ben, what I meant is, with the two different display modes, what does a spanned clip look like in the hiearchial mode? If you have both cards being read, then like filmstox shows, in the 'flat' mode, it appears as one clip using the first clip's filename. So in the 'hiearchial' display mode, will the clip be the same name under both p2 cards, will it just get shifted up or down to one of them? This doesn't impact anything in terms of processing, its just a curiousity thing about how it choses to display it.

hatch - have you tested the ability to re-ingest the clips? That was exactly what I was going to ask Ben about.

cheers.

Actually, just found the first thing I did not like about the FCP 5.1.2 P2 import procedure. In the upper right side of the left-hand box which shows the clips to be imported, there is a pulldown menu. You can also access this by control-click in that window.Select Preferences. That is the only place where you have the Remove Advanced Pulldown check box. I think this could be problematic, certainly in situations where you might not want to remove the pulldown. The most obvious example here is importing undercranked/overcranked footage. In those situations, you don't want to remove the pulldown but let the FRC take care of it. That's going to be missed on a lot of folks and we'll see tons of "I can't get VFR to work in FCP 5.1.2." So, I would really like to see that restored to a more visible place.

Vari,

It shows the clip name from the first in the series listed under both cards. Interestingly, if you eject the spanned clip, it will eject both cards/folders. Here's what it looks like:

Thanks

Thanks

Ah cool, thanks for that. Can't wait till we next use the HVX, it'll be fun to get process it with the new setup.

cheers.

Can you inport the P2 folders into FCP and have the quicktimes saved to individual 4 gig folders for easy DVD archiving. That would be sweet if it could keep track of that nad do that..

Question...I am still in FCP 5.0.4, and I'm just now finding out about this crossgrade deal. I sent off my form today...how long is it gonna take before I get the new software?

My two cross grades were seven days start to finish; one returned by media mail and the other by UPS.

Ned, if you have an Easy Setup for 1080/24pA, as 5.1.2 seems to have, would you still really need that Advance Pulldown option relative to your clips? Perhaps I have idealistically thought that it would do it for you, but if not, then I agree the advance pulldown selection option is ill-placed...

I'm in the same boat having just ordered my crossgrade on wednesday, hope I get it by next week.
They say they will ship 24 hours from the time they receive your disks bearing in mind i'm uk based and turnaround may be different than in the states.
Anybody ordered the crossgrade in the uk, how long were you waiting ?
cheers

Right click (2-button mice run FCP way better than 1-button dose) on the headings bar and you can bring up more columns. You can set it to display the pulldown status so you see it right there clear as day.

Ok kids, a testing update for you! Here's what I've found over the last two days of working with the new P2 import window.

The "Archive to Folder..." option only works with P2 cards in the camera. I have not been able to check if it's available to P2 cards mounted in a Powerbook's PCcard slot. It is NOT available when using an FS-100, not sure why, as all the pertinent data is still there anyway. I'll check with Matt on this issue.

A full half-hour of footage on an FS-100 took 15 minutes to ingest. Slightly better than it took my QC G5 before, much faster than other Macs I know of are taking.

Clip spanning does indeed work, you just have to have both P2 cards (if it spans across cards) mounted at the same time. It works with the FS-100 very well, too!

P2 cards in the camera (haven't tested on a Powerbook's PCcard slot) mount automatically. An FS-100 won't mount automatically in the P2 window, you need to find it manually.

If you do a "search" in OS X (from a Finder window, I never touch Spotlight), it finds the names you gave the clips in your logging info. It will not find them by searching for the original archaic P2 name it originally had. Although that data is still stored ONLY as long as the P2 card/FS-100 is connected. When you change a clip's name, it changes in the P2 list on the left. Right click and you can revert back to the original Metadata. Once captured and the P2/FS is unmounted, that original archaic name you changed is changed for good, period, not stored anywhere I can find.

Strange display glitch in the new 10.4.8 upgrade. It did some weird things to my Apple HD Cinema Display. But after running MacJanior and Disk Utility and re-booting, I was fine. I had to do it to get the upgrade for Aperture, but you don't have to have it for the FCP 5.1.2 upgrade. Some pro-app upgrades are tied directly to OS upgrades on occasion. I don't see the 10.4.8 upgrade as being vital to FCP 5.1.2, so I wouldn't worry about it until they do the next OS upgrade soon, that will correct the bugs in this current one. Seems to effect iMacs and MBP systems mostly.

Ben,

Okay read all your stuff about there being no ghosts of the archaic P2 card naming stuff after you've renamed things yourself. However, even if you can't find it in an obvious spot, is it possibly still there for a 're-digitizing'? Like if you lose all the processed MOVs, but have all the MXFs and your project file w/ all the timecode ins and outs and such of the MOVs, can you 're-digitize' off the MXFs or will you have to manually re-log all your P2 materials? (Yes the simple solution here is to simply also backup the MOVs, but if you didn't....).

cheers.

Good question. I did see a post somewhere about the ability to offline P2 files for editing, then re-importing in full rez. Myself and one or two others on that thread (may not have been this forum, don't remember) agreed that doing off-line edits with DVCPRO-HD/P2 defeats half the purpose of DVCPRO-HD. It's an all I-frame codec, there's no Intermediate Codec needed. Most all NLE's handle it pretty smoothly. So there's no real need for any off-line versions.

Just ranting there, sorry.

But back to your specific question. If you lose your renamed QT files? As far as I know, you'd have to reimport everything. But what I'd do is, just rename everything the same, then when you open the project, it should automatically re-link. If not, manually relink. But, it's not going to be as easily done as said. So, I don't think that once the clip is imported and the P2 card or FS-100 is errased, there's no record of that original name in the QT file, cause you changed it. As Far As I Am Aware! I could run a test; copy CONTENTS to my media drive, re-name and import, save project and quit FCP, trash the re-named QTs, see if I mount the original CONTENTS, if it'll reconnect. My guess is it won't. But I'll have to try it later tonight and see. That is if I don't catch any fish while waiting on the photo shoot tonight. If I do catch something worth while, it may not be until Monday for the test.

I do this for a living. It pays my house note. So I have everything backed up all the time. Any projects I work on that day, get backed-up that night. Everything gets backed up once a week. So, when you ask me what to do if you lose everything, I'd say, as a responsable producer/editor, recover from your back-up. But we don't live in a perfect world. I don't have all the photos and 8mm home film I shot back in the 70's. In fact, I have very little of that stuff. Crashes will happen, s**t will get lost for good, we'll get in major trouble, we'll struggle through it, we resolve it, we move on. Life, what can you do?

Just found another neat trick. Well, two "features" with this new P2 Import window.

Select all your clips on the left (cmd+A), in the preview window on the right, go to Import Settings, deselect the second set of audio tracks (that your HVX doesn't record to anyway), set the top pair to be stereo. Then hit the "Apply To Selection" button. All your clips will be set up to import just a stereo pair of audio tracks one and two only, no extra set of blank audio tracks to deal with!

Second, if you right click a clip and go to Preferences and select, or deselect the "Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames" function, it applies to ALL your clips. This is not a clip by clip function. Hope they make an option to do either.

I also noticed that when I fired up FCP 5.2.1 this morning, then after it was up and running and the P2 Import window was open, I put my FS-100 into hard drive mode, it automatically mounted in the P2 Import window as a P2 card!

Also, I see the circles on the left of each clip, hollow means they have not been imported, colored in means they have been imported. If a clip needs to be spanned and there accompanying clip is not there, it will say "(incomplete)" next to the clips Icon.

And clips on an FS-100 play back smoother in the P2 Import preview window, clips on P2 cards in the HVX don't play as smoothly in the preview window.
