XL2 Footage with 24p and cine settings?

Re: XL2 Footage with 24p and cine settings?

Well I couldn't resist breaking out the XL2 and playing with it for 5 minutes... went ahead and set it up, turned on Cinegamma, switched the color matrix to Cine... it does NOT have that amazing DVX "everything looks better on Cinegamma" look. Now the usual disclaimers apply, I haven't hooked it up to a broadcast monitor, I haven't tweaked the settings that much... but let me say, I DID tweak for a few minutes, and even raising the gain on some colors, lowering the master pedestal, etc., I still don't think it looks as good on tape as the DVX. The camera certainly has a lot of advantages, and it sure is nice looking at footage in full resolution in 16:9 unstretched. Let me get some comparison 24p Cinegamma clips of the same stuff on both cameras up, and then we'll have a better idea. Also the camera defaults to 1/24 shutter speed in 24p, kind of odd. Anyway, I'll post footage Wed or Thurs. I do think the XL2 will definitely be the new PD150/DVX in terms of use on low-budget, non-HD feature films simply because of the interchangeable lens and true 16:9. Footage to come.

Re: XL2 Footage with 24p and cine settings?

I guess it has to be like this. The DVX has a Cinemagamma which is a "not film, but it's what we would like to have on film" gamma. To me it doesn't look naturelly but it looks what I would like to paint on video. It is a kind of DVX-filmlook. We can't say: it is it.. and this is the only filmlook. But I can tell I like the DVX "filmlook" more than the XL2 today. What I gonna like after tomorrow is a new subject.

The DVX has a brown-green filmlook as I can judge now. It looks very god. But one of the "films" here has a starting sequence which is a "made by sony or what ever camcorder" look. It was made with DVX cinegamma. But the light and the color of the rom was just not god to make that filmlook.

The main problem is that we are waiting for a "push the filmlook buttom" option to make a film.

I was watching several Hollywood films on DVD now as a study for a project we gonna start now. Just to find a common camaramovement we can copy .. etc, and now I was watching the colortemperature as well. Never did before. And I can tell you there is a lot of different filmlook out there.

Yeah, well, there's a lot of different film stock out there, not to mention all the processes you can put it through, not to mention digital intermediates everyone is using these days...

But anyone who's doing a DVX/XL2 project with any seriousness, much less a feature film, is going to be doing some serious post-processing, regardless of film-out or not.  I use Magic Bullet a lot, and I'm trying to get into Color Finesse (included in AE 6.5), but I've gotta say that MB, despite its long rendering times, is pretty damn impressive, both quality-wise and amount-of-time-spent-tweaking-wise.  Whatever you use, you're gonna be tweaking the image, and due to its higher resolution 16:9 and multitude of lens options, the XL2 is going to be superior in most instances.  I was just saying that the DVX has an almost magical quality to it when you turn on the Cinegamma, and the XL2 does not, in terms of the raw images it produces, if you're doing a project that doesn't require/doesn't have time for serious color-correction.

Re: XL2 Footage with 24p and cine settings?

Having used the DVX100 for 2 years and loved it's filmlook I can say that the cinegamma on the XL2 is not as drastic as the DVX. What I mean is when you turn it on the DVX....BAM!! IT instantly has a Filmlook to it. However the pure image and clarity of the XL2 will make it easier to manipulate in post.

I for one was all for the "in camera" filmlook. I like to shoot and leave it as it is. However the truth is that there is nothing magic in the DVX Cinnegamma that cannot be produced in post production using the XL2. In other word you can manipulate the sharper clearer images to have the color curves of the DVX. However it would be very hard to get DVX footage, with all of its colors, to look cleaner and sharper.

I guess that I'll have to get used to shooting for the most clean, dynamic image and get the look of film in post.

Having said that I started tweaking the XL2 and can get a look closer to the DVX. However the colors just aren't as saturated as the DVX. I guess time will tell.
