Other: XAVC Long GOP 4K 10Bit 4:2:2 200Mbps ANNOUNCED

Forget the codec, it's the camera that is the real news. I've already seen it at NAB and it is killer. 4K, 3-chip, CMOS, global shutter, S-LOG, native B4 mount, with all the bells and whistles of a traditional ENG shoulder-mount camera. This camera will become the go-to camera for sports, wildlife, news, run & gun, etc. I'll have one in my hands soon for testing and I'm already thinking my F55's days might be numbered. I'm so looking forward to getting back to an 22x servo zoom lens. Sadly it won't have variable ND, but I lived without that for 40 years so I'll manage.

Nice...

I love some of the comments by the ignorant on the Alpharumors sight. Some boob said, "I'm more interested in the global shutter features, Sony finally introduced it in the consumer camcorder, should we expect it to arrive on the a7sIII too?" Someone corrects them and they still said "it will be sold in normal camera stores" and "it is still categorically a consumer camcorder".

Yeah, pretty ignorant. I don't know what the price will be but I'm sure it will be more than the Z450 which is $25K + EVF + Lens + batteries, etc. A loaded camera is going to be in the $60K - $70K range. Should I pre-order at Best Buy or Walmart?

Believe it or not, I just got the best price on a new rolling Xeen Lens Case through the Walmart website!
(they probably had no idea what it was, lol)

I think the Walmart website is more or less a collective commerce site with so much of the stuff on there having nothing to do with Walmart itself. Sorta like some things you buy on Amazon, where it may not be shipped or sold from Amazon. They're just selling it through Amazon.

Lol.

I am glad to see that there is still development going on in the big-boy world of ENG cameras.

Don't forget that 4K/UHD XAVC-L in the FS7 for example is 8-bit 4:2:0 at 150Mbps. It's not a 4K/UHD 4:2:2 10-bit 200Mbps long GOP codec as this new version of the codec claims to be. Considering the increase from 8-bit to 10-bit and the increase in overall payload with the extra chroma sampling of 4:2:2 it is basically a 4 x increase in data levels, 256 to 1024 to deliver this. On that basis the jump of 50Mbps from 8-bit @ 150Mbps to 10-bit @ 200Mbps doesn't sound like an enormous jump in bit rate to accommodate the increased data payload. The only XAVC-L 4:2:2 10-bit codec in the FS7 is the HD one only.

I only use the non L codecs in the FS7.

I understand L codecs can be efficient and therefore deliver good quality to bit rate ratio (???)

Im just wondering if potential (Sony mirrorless) B cams will be looking to match better?

A7SIII came out half a year ago. It's called Panasonic S1.

Is it for that (new eng) camera.. or a possible upgrade to smaller cameras (either as FW or just in furutre models)

doubtless it would be an upgrade on the little cams.

Another thing - why are the ENG cams still so big? They have not got smaller since the tapedeck was removed...
I'd think, since they have a fixed long heavy zoom, they might as well have some balance for the shoulder mounting. Hypothetically, of course, they could have gone to a smaller, smartphone size, sensor and smaller zoom a la Nikon 1000. But ... this is a high end pro camera and they want low light capabilities too for their late afternoon golf, bike/auto racing coverage.

Id love a small 2/3 camera with a half decent look

See the answer above. Smaller is not a desirable feature for ENG cameras. Function dictates form and the Betacam/F800/F900/Z450 form factor is just about perfect for handheld shooting and even by far the best for tripod.

Doug - can you explain the codec :)

It would be a step up in a mirrorless, but not as 'good' as the FS7?

I don't trust CODEC comparisons based upon specs. I want to see comparisons based on actual footage shot because the implementation of a CODEC is everything.

When ALL-I 400 Mbit 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 encoding was added to the Panasonic GH5 there was essentially no visual difference when compared to Long GOP IPB 150 Mbit 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 footage, but depending on what you were shooting you might see some differences in motion cadence. ( Long GOP is not a good choice for fast moving subjects ) I would expect similar differences with Sony Long GOP IPB 200 Mbit 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 footage.

Are you talking about matching recording formats? -- or matching color?

The problem with matching color is that you need to pick something to match to -- maybe the Venice? or F55? or my old favorite, the F3? I personally am not interested in using the color from the FS7 as a standard to match to.

Long GOP is not a good choice for fast moving subjects
Sorry, but this is just nonsense.
Also, there is no difference motion cadence wise.

The only advantage an all-intra encoding has over long-GOP is that non-sequential frame seek time is much faster when you edit clips.

Sorry, but this is just nonsense.

I remember a thread from 5-6 years ago where people were comparing frames of fast moving water that were using IPB compression against ALL-I, and there were motion-cadence distortions appearing in the IPB footage that were not appearing in the ALL-I footage. I've also seen this done with fast pans of people walking/running, where the motion in the IPB footage did not look as natural as the ALL-I footage.

I've never heard of any shooter choosing ALL-I recording over IPB compression because it's easier to edit. ( I know that there can be a big difference, especially with h.265 compressed footage, but I've never heard of anyone saying "I shoot ALL-I because I want easier to edit footage". )
