XA10 vs HF G10 vs DSLR What do you lose?

i don't actually recall seeing volume control of any kind on the g10 but it wouldn't surprise me that it has some LCD type of control. however, if you've ever done much shooting you know that very quickly sound can change from one level to another and a dial is a real PLUS :-)

as far as formats i think this is what i saw . . 1920 x 1080 at 60i, 30p, 24p and there was one other i believe. there might have been more but that was all that i was interested in for our purposes. hope that helps. perhaps another g10 - xa10 user could jump in here. as i say, ive only had them in my hands to work with a few times, the g10 for like 3 days, and therein i am waiting to see if there will be a xa20 or whether to just go ahead and get the xa10's once i hear all the reviews of the g20 and see if the wait would even be worth considering. :-)
Thanks ,i am not sure the G20 has enough improvements over the G10 to worry much,I shall probobly go with the XA10 hopefully.

and me too. i got some financing today but im not happy with it . . 50% interest over a 24 month period . . OUCH! wow i thought usury was illegal :-) i will go with two of 'em with the sennheiser evolution 100+ series wireless lavs.

The only improvements that the HF G20 has over the G10 and the XA10 are that #1: Canon is claiming a 20% improvement in low light performance for the G20's sensor ( but does not explain specifically how they measure that ), and #2: the G20 also has a new, more advanced image stabilization option called Dynamic SuperRange Optical. Otherwise, the G20 is identical to the G10.

You can indeed put the G10 and G20's volume control into a manual mode, and then manually adjust the level. It takes two taps on the LCD to get to that microphone options screen. So it is not as convenient as having a physical dial. Manual volume level control cannot be assigned to the Custom Dial.

Why the new low end Canon consumer camcorders have had 1080/60p 28 Mbps added as an option, while it was not added to the much more expensive G20, though, is certainly a mystery. Likewise the new 35 Mbps MP4 recording option that the less expensive new camcorders also have.

Interesting that the G20 is being introduced at a MSRP of $1,099 in the USA, while the G10 was introduced two years ago with a MSRP of $1,499

Availability of the G20 here in the USA is being quoted as sometime in February. So it is still some weeks from coming to market.

You will definitely want to buy at least one BP-827 battery. The BP-808 battery that comes with the camcorder is quite anemic, and was a big disappointment.

It is also rather disappointing that no battery charger comes with these camcorders either. That is especially true regarding the XA-10, since it costs so much more.

great information "LanceOregon" thanks for the input. i think i'll not worry about the matter and just move forward on the xa10's. if the "G" series had a real hot shoe and not that generic tiny special soft shoe AND it was at the front of the camera instead of at the back where its right in ones face/eye's way, id maybe just go with the "G" models and use a Y adaptor and utilize the Sennheiser Evolution Series mics with the mini cord for CH1 and CH2.

however, being in the pro side for the last 7 years filming and editing over 400 tv shows, countless commercials, events, and weddings, to the tune of over 1,000 productions, i think id be totally lost without balanced xlr's. oh sure i could "work around" but that work around would probably put me in a hurt with some of my upper end clients that i still want to work with on the odd occasion. so i think, i'll stick with the xa10 model and get all i can from it. in fact, im kinda excited about the whole change over to small foot print, light weight, and 100% high def, plus . . . no tapes . . YES !!

No battery charger,so how can the cam be used, the battery has to be charged to use it,surely a separate charger is not needed as an extra purchase,i have never had to do this on any of the dozens of cams and cmera purchases.

So the power adaptor does not charge batteries ,oh my god what do need to get

i think what he means is no "external" battery charger like the ones sold on ebay and B&H for like 30-40 bux that can be plugged directly in the wall and the battery inserted into the unit. the xa10 charges the battery via the camera . . that is, you have to have the camera plugged into power and the battery gets charged that way. most all small footprint camcorders utilize this format for charging. i always pick up an external charger for around 20-30 bux to accommodate charging without need of the camera to do so.

My saviour thanks,http://www.digitaltoyshop.co.uk/Accessories_Canon_XA10_t2549 any advise on which charger would be best and also best battery that would still allow the viewfinder to be used easily.

The XLR inputs will probobly never be used by me,all my mics are stereo including the Rode stereo,i hope i have not paid an extra £600 plus sterling over the HF G10 what is basicaly the carry handle.

The http://www.duracelldirect.co.uk/cam.../BP-827.html&gclid=CMyA-oXJ_rQCFQ7LtAodrGMA9g looks very large, good capacity according to the specs http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Camcorders/professional/XA10/ but it looks like length of the BP-827 will obstruct the use of the viewfinder which i use mostly in daylight,I cant find an origional Canon XA10 battery charger any where.

Recieved my XA10 today, figured out most imediate things except a few sound problems, hopefully teathing problems.

Yes only available during the AV Aperture-Pri-AE and M manual mode, but in auto they can be selected when adjusting the aperture depending on the selected setting ND 1/2[1/4 or IND 1/8 will appear on the screen next to the aperture value,
Words from the manual, they cant explain it easily.

yeah (hehehe) Canon makes great cameras AND awesome lenses (glass) BUT their manuals are something out of the dark ages. i mean once you learn how the writers of their manuals THINK you're on course but until that happens, "ochie wah wah" what a nightmare. you definitely have to be on the "pro" side to have a clue of what their manuals mean. hehehe

If i am in manual aperture mode and turn the cam off it returns to A when the cam is switched back on,a pain hopefully there is a setting i am not using.

ouch. yeah that would be a pain in the wahzoo. do check that out and let us know? or someone else that owns an xa10 jump in and let us know?

An online contact friend with a G10 says [Chris you have hit the nail on the head you have to reset... pain.[/QUOTE]]his words.

Are you waiting for an ordered XA10 to arrive or deciding whether to get one.

[He was wrong, i am a plonker]the cam has to be in TV Shutter shutter priority or AV Aperture -PR-AE then turning the cam off does not affect the settins being used.

oh this is GREAT news! i usually shoot in AV mode (which allows control of light when moving camera) and of course i would assign the aperture to the rear dial. thanks for this info.

yes trying to decide what to do. i need TWO of either G10 or XA10 because i do a talking heads program and having sold off all my assets and shot funded, im trying to find a way to get it all. obviously for what i do, the xa10 is preferred. however, two of em are 3550 at B&H while two of the G10's would be 2200 . . which is managageable for my present financial state :(
