Re: i agree with mark.

Nicks' entire statement in that post pisses me off. First he goes off and says you cant do that rack in camera, which he was wrong. Then he goes and attacks us all, saying everyone here "Can't Paint" that liked the video. How do I vote him down to take away those stars by his name?

I come to this part of the forum to see, as the thread is named, "View clips and Frame grabs from The DVX in action!"
I only care about the visual elements I am watching, and although a good story or script or "originality" is nice to see, its not important and there is a separate place here at DVXuser that discusses writing.

I think you should lighten up, stop insulting us and all the other members here, specially to a superb young filmmaker like Matt, who is young and negative comments that do not help and is not constructive may impact him alot more than to those of us who have been around in the industry for more years than he has been alive.

John, are you seriously his agent? You two are probably going to be getting alot of calls, as this demo reel is of serious merit.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

cant we all just get along?!... free willy, make love not war! .. shop at s-mart. a tisket, a tasket, we all fall down.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

This thread is getting ugly.. Im gonna lock it for a bit till people cool down and get back on to the topic.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

ok.. back open, its not fair to Matt to have 1 person ruin this thread for him. If you post anything off topic here its gonna get ixnayed. So keep the critisism constructive, and by god please dont insult the entire group of members again anybody :)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I haven't seen this kid's work and I'd love to, based on the praise.

By the way, most forms of artwork today is a derivative of a previous master.  Especially in storytelling.  Many tragic romance stories are based on Romeo and Juliet, ie. Westside Story, Titanic, etc.  Doesn't mean they're not good because they're not original.  By the way, Shakespeare stole the idea of Romeo and Juliet from another story written before his time.

If Hitchcock invented the vertigo effect by dollying and zooming at the same time in his film Vertigo, does it mean that Spielberg is unoriginal by using it in Jaws?  I don't think so.

Keep it up Matt.  And dam it, will you please increase your bandwidth limit?  I want to see this thing.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

The question of "originality" could stand some scrutiny, certainly.  I mean, as much of a fan of Matt's work as I am, when someone asked what it was like, in an earlier post I said "go look at a good high-quality 35mm music video, that's what it looks like".

So no, there's nothing about the content that's original.  But the post skills, the artistry, the ability to take UNLIT DVX100 footage (on the behind-the-scenes, it looked like Matt had the DVX up on a ladder, the girl performing on the sidewalk, no lighting, no bounce cards, nothing) and make it look LIKE THAT... man, that's skills!

About scripted/narrative work: not everyone aspires to be a moviemaker.  Perhaps Matt does.  But filmmakers do not necessarily make good music videos, and brilliant music video makers have made some questionable films.  Documentary-makers don't necessarily excel at making commercials, and wedding shooters don't make the best training films, etc.  The world of videography, filmography, filmmaking, and "shooting" is very big, and wherever Matt's (or anyone's) aspirations lie, it may not be in traditional contemporary scripted narrative. But it sure seems to me that he could get a job today as a music video maker, if that's what he wants to do.

Secondly, I think Matt's shown a tremendous amount of artistry.  I've got my skills, but I can't do what Matt can.  I wish I could.  Yes it's very similar to what else is out there.  But it's very similar to the best of what else is out there, and that's saying something.  I'd hire him in a minute to handle post/stylization/color correction on some of my spots, if I was doing spots that require that kind of look.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I too appreciate Jarred's moderation on the forum. I understand where people are coming from, and I think there were some valid points made, but let's keep it civil. In fact, I think that overall, this is the calmest board I've ever seen -- there are rarely ever any attacks, which is quite refreshing.

Excellent board, Jarred!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

good to see we are back on topic. Thanks guys.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Is there a mirror to this movie somewhere? I would love to see what everyone is talking about and the website of his seems not to work anymore.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Oh, that figures. I go away for the weekend; the thing is finally available to see; and when I get back, bandwidth exceeded.

Will I ever get to see it?

Now, of course, there's a serious danger of letdown after massive anticipation.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Fantastic work and it further shows the capabilities of this camera in the hands of skilled and/or well-practiced users. Whether you're a great capture guy/gal or great post guy/gal whatever, the dvx can help you produce some brilliant work and footage like this helps keep raising the bar. This is by far some of the best dvx footage I've seen and there is lots of outstanding footage posted here, this is just another great piece added to the list.

I've made decisions (as I'm sure others have) based on reviews, observations, opinions and work from lots of people on this board and stuff like this helps reinforce the fact that this camera is a very wise investment.

Great job Matt!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Jubal28,

i was thinking the same too. having heard so much hype about his work, i was thinking "ok, i hope he lives up to the buzz he's got going. but i doubt it".

uh yeah, i was very wrong. no matter what you think this kid is capable of with a DVX in your mind, its better than that. haha. hows that for adding to expectation. seriously though. its remarkable work across the board. directing, cinematography, lighting, location scouting, editing style, FX work.... its all top quality. and yes, all done by him.

think of the best DVX footage youve seen so far, and this will blow it out of the water. its THAT good.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Personally, coming from a point of view of experience, I see the point Nick was trying to make. Granted, he didn't do it in diplomatic fashion. But also everyone should remember that the written word can come across more harshly than is intended as there are no inflection in the words. And with that said:

Being a comic book artist myself, when I was Matt's age (sigh.. OH so long ago ;D), I used to try an emulate other artists who's work I found to be inspirational. So much so that by the time I was 25 I had their chops down to the point where the majority of comic book industry people would look at my work and mistake it for another artists. Eventually, I started on my own artistic path and began to put my own spin on my work, thus taking what I learned by looking at my influences and then evolving that approach someplace else. Today, while the influence is still there at it's core, no one looks at my work and mistakes it for another artists. (this doesn't make it better or worse, just different)

I would put to everyone here that this is a normal progression of any artists work as he/she learns and grows with experience. I believe what Nick saw in Matt's work was a similar situation to what others saw in my early work as an illustrator. I believe I made a similar comment in that I saw a heavy influence of MTV generation directors in Matt's work. Nothing wrong with that at all. I just hope Matt looks to learn from storytelling directors as well so his incredible growth pattern can continue into directing narratives as well as his great music video stuff. Even if as Barry stated, he chooses to only be a music video director, I don't think anyone should be encouraged to have a narrow focus when it comes to potential artistic growth. Leaning more all around can only improve the work which one chooses to set their focus on.

Now could Nick's comments have come across less harshly? Sure. But I don't believe his intentions were meant as a slam on Matt per se so much as a reaction to the one sided praise minus the CONSTRUCTIVE criticism Matt's been receiving. My guess is Nicks intent was to point out a few things he and I both saw from another point of view.

And again, I like what Matt did. Even sent a link to a DP friend of mine for him to check it out.  ;D

The "buzz" is WAAAAAY beyond that at this point . . .

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hi Matt,

Just finished reading this whole thread (in a few settings) and sound like you have something very nice to show. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it as your site is down to excessive bandwidth usage :(.

Although I normally would not offer without first seeing, in this case I think it would be justified, so Matt if you need some bandwidth, I can mirror your video, at least for a while. I have a few GB per day just lying around right now, so if you can use it, just let me know.

Besides, I may never get a chance to see it otherwise ;D.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Matt you are SICK! I can't wait to see your **** on mtv, bet, vh1, and any other channel that plays music videos. You are a phenom and I know your work will be recognized major one day!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

;D :D

Contact me at "info@mattmcdermitt.com" - I'm not sure how to set that up but I would love that! The site is closed for the next 9 days... thats when I get more bandwidth. I am writing a treatment for my next video as we speak. I should have some behind the scenes stuff - and maybe some new footage up by then.

-Matt

PS. - John your fired. ;) Just joking
