Woot! Just ordered my GH1!

seriously - Why?

T1i was enough of a disappointment for me, I don't think much will change with the t2i. I really need more of a 'video' camera - and I think the GH1 is going to be better than the canon lineup at the moment.

Plus, I shoot 1080/24 and 720/60 all the time. No real need for the new framerates. The T1i's 1080/20 and 720/30 = FAIL

Why?
Why?
Why?
Why?

Barry's question of Why? is still echoing through this thread.

hopefully it will not go unanswered, cause we all know the "should have waited a month for the T2i" comment should have never been posted.

OK. I got the T2i. Oh no! Scarlet just came out! Kick myself! Whew, it was just a dream! Nice T2i! Purdy T2i! Oh no! The T3i just came out! With 3D UltraMoire and IMAXminime. Why can't things be like in the Soviet Union when there's just one model that lasts for 50 yrs!

...and one flavor cheese.... "frumundah"

Thanks for posting the price change. I ordered mine last week for 1233. they are giving me a credit for the difference

uhh, the why would be, its a newer gen device (video wise), better controls, better lens selection, for $300 less money.

Its also likely a better still camera.

Yes, the T1i was inferior, but it looks like the T2i may have the same video capabilities as the 7D, which we all know to be the leader in teh DSLR game at the moment. (arguably with the 5DMkII)

This is all based on your speculation and opinion...

Newer never guarantees better
controls are going to be limited to just about the same as all slrs
better lenses? you get a nice one right out of the box with panny - buy a cheap adapter and shoot all the canon lenses
$300 less? not after you buy a decent lens comparable (even far less comparable will be more then $300)

Even besides all that... still wont work for me - what event videographer has events shorter than 12 minutes :(

Well yes its speculation that hte video will be the same as the 7D (much like the D5000 is the same as the D90), BUT if its true, do you acknowledge that it would be superior in this case?

it's all debatable as each user of what ever camera is capable of getting different results could be great, could be horrible, but the original poster of this thread obviously knows exactly why he wanted a GH1. The T2i hasnt been tested yet by anyone on this board, so it's kinda wishful and immature to assume it's superior to the GH1, the T2i could overheat, probably not, but it could happen as the camera is not out yet to be tested. If the T2i is all that of the 7d, that would mean Canon has made all the money they wanted to make off the 7d, because, Why? would you want to buy a 7d when you could get the same result with the T2i for 300.00 less.

The test footage that I've seen out of the T2i isnt anything to label "better", but it could be my eye's, or maybe it was the lens, or maybe it was the compression, or maybe it was
any number of reasons footage can look less appealing.

Except that while it's newer, it *doesn't* have better controls, it most certainly doesn't have half the available lens selection, and its overall quality is unknown at this point.

Its also likely a better still camera.
Why do you say that?

But the 7D video isn't better than the GH1. They're about the same. The 7D's codec is better, but its actual imagers deliver a worse image with purple/orange colored moire, so they net out about the same.

Fair enough, id likely wait a month and see, but either way they are all capable of some pretty impressive results.

hmm, so your saying its not a well established fact that the 7D video is better than the GH1?

I mean from what ive seen its a much more versitile camera, and it outperforms it.

I mean did George Lucas invite Phillip Bloom out to collect and screen some GH1 footage at Skywalker ranch on a 40 foot screen that Taratino also viewed?

:shruggs:

Yes but, Philip used the 5DMKII for 80% of the shoot.

There are many threads comparing the pros/cons of the GH-1 and 7D- From what I gather, the bottom line is that- they BOTH have ....PROS and CONS. Depends on the application, the user, and one's preference really.

Funny how we were discussing the t2i(no-one has tested) vs GH1, and then the 7d was brought up to support the claim on t2i... we have now discussed 3 different cameras. man I love the GH1 lol

well, Jon(MadHMC150) seems to be very happy that he purchased the GH1, and that's all that matters.

Yes I am saying exactly that.

Wait -- which one outperforms which?

I don't know -- did he? Does that somehow establish some measure of "superiority"?

Did you know I went out and personally trained Peter Jackson on using his HVX200 cameras -- should we then infer that the HVX200 is "better" than the 7D?

Heck, JDS and I made a film that's premiering at one of the top-10 film festivals in the world, South By Southwest, and it was shot on a GH1. Are you saying that if we'd shot it on a 7D it'd somehow be "better"? Would we have gotten in Sundance if we'd shot on a 7D instead?

Each product has advantages over the other. The 720/60p of the GH1 blows the 7D into the weeds. The 1080/24p of the 7D is slightly better in some ways, and worse in other, than the GH1. The codec of the 7D is better than the GH1. The ergonomics and usability of the GH1 is way, way better than that of the 7D.

I've got 'em both, I really do know what I'm talking about.

Thanks Barry for keeping things in correct perspective :)

+1

This is just one of the tools in the shed, and I am pretty certain it will be a very good value. I can re-coop the cost of a gh1 a lot quicker then a 7d... time is money and I would loose money to wait for the t2i.

each to their own... in the end... I know I will be shooting for more than 12 minutes straight though
