WMVHD Framegrabs!

Ok guys.. I got on a HD workstation to get a proper look at the WMVHD 1080 footage.. and HOT DAMN it's sweet..

But onto the point.. I pulled it open in a 1920x1080 24P premiere project and exported some still grabs for eveyone to look at. I did no adjustments to the footage.

I dumped them as .TIFFs and .JPGs - with no compression in each - to my server.
PLEASE NOTE: these grabs are from WMVHD footage - they are NOT RAW from the camera.

As normal, they are here: http://mikko.n3.net/hvx200/ (labled HVX_1080-24p...)

The above image is a compressed .jpg for preview only. Consider it a "HD size" thumbnail!

Direct URLs to the JPGs: (around 1MB each)

On close look, the images have the same "detail" as a DVX or any other 1/3 chip camera, its just that the image is BIGGER, being HD res. However, the tonal quality due to the 4:2:2 is amazing.

I couldn't agree more. But I think perhaps the solution is shooting 720P "native" rather than 480i. I think we are seeing some benefit provided by Progressive scan, and 720P should capture all the detail that the chips can provide. At this point, 1080P looks like overkill, and I'd rather have a recorded image that's as close as possible to what the chips provide. In a sense, it seems that in 720P, the image is slightly oversampled (the chips make what, 760 lines?) and in 1080 it's all about interpolation. I love the tonal quality of the skin. 4:1:1 can eat my shorts.

I love how the camera handled the highlights in grab 4 of the guy inside with the paper. Sweet stuff!

I think that with the implementation of a good 35mm adapter and some good glass many low budget independent filmmaker's wishes and prayers have been answered.

Don't forget that those grabs are from WMV-HD (not H264) compressed footage, not from raw camera footage!

Also, regarding this transfer I have running.. It is a big file (:)) so it will be a few hours before I get it up.
