Wide angle converter on 50mm

Ok, something strange happened. I was playing around with the wide angle lens again but this time on my 50mm 1.8 and the edges were a lot crisper with this combination! So I compared the 50mm 1.4 and the 50mm 1.8. The 1.8 glass is much flatter... now I could be wrong but I am pretty sure that this is why the 1.4 shows a lot of blur on the edges when the wide angle lens is on.

So, it looks like I have a 35mm 1.8 when I put the wide angle on. Still not too bad...

Mojo,

I am happy that you have better results. I am using my converters with a 24mm f2. From what I remember, the 0.5X adapter is not really delivering 50% decrease in the focal lenght: it kind of looks like 19mm from the 24mm (maybe because it has to go on the lens with the 'macro' attachment...

I am still a little bit snowed under with work, I have to deliver the video this weekend. The Canon 1D4 file size is much larger and takes more time to ingest and convert. I should have shot it with the GH1. But a new toy is anew toy and I need to go through all the kinks in the system to see which one is god for what.

Hopefully I have some time tomorrow and I will post some files.

No problem at all pix2... work comes first!! :)

Also, just in case anyone else is reading I did some more tests today with the wide angle and although it is a lot better with 1.8, I still find that it is unacceptably soft. I have decided not to use this combination.... (maybe a raynox wide angle would be better)

Raynox looks better than the other one I have:
I made a quick test (720p mJPEG only) I am able to post. AVCHD will come later as my FCP is still rendering....

GH1 720p, MJPEG, Canon FD, 24mm, @ f2.8

.... and to see that the adaptors can look REALLY BAD as well, this one is with a the same adaptor, with a different lens, different camera:

EOS 1D4, 1080p, Pentax Super Takumar 35mm f2 @ 2,8

Thanks for posting that pix2... So any idea why one lens looks fine and another would look really bad?

I used quite a few of them with 1/3", 2/3" cameras, point and shoot digicams, GH1 and they seem to be acceptable. All those projects were broadcast on national TV networks, were screened in international festivals, some of them got awards for cinematography as well. No complaints there. I had photos done with Canon G5 and wide angle adapters printed on glossy cover magazines or newspapers at A3 size.

Sorry to disappoint the Leica and Zeiss militia.

On the other hand, they are not performing well at all, I would say they look quite bad on larger sensor cameras, like EOS 1D or FF 35mm film cameras. Have a look at the images posted.

The MTF of a vDSLR has nothing to do with the MTF of the same lens/DSLR camera combo when used in full raster mode or with an equivalent frame size in a film camera.

Please note the difference between vDSLR and DSLR.

Waiting for Scarlet

Can we get some moving footage with the better of the adapters? I really need a wide angle adapter solution and I want to see what this looks like.

I just sold the one that I had... I am planning to purchase the one that pix2pixel uses (raynox). I will post when I get it...

Did you purchased that raynox wide adapter? I'm interested on making wider my canon FD lenses, and my Panasonic 14-42... :)

I've a Raynox DCR-250 (close-up/macro), and I'm quite happy with it.

No I never did buy it. I bought some different lenses instead. How much was the one you got?
