Wide angle converter on 50mm

Maybe a stupid question but just out of curiosity... if I could come by a good wide conversion lens (.7X) for really cheap and I added it to a 50mm FD f1.4 lens would I then have a 35mm f1.4 lens?

Thanks in advance

You will get a 35mm fov, but you will also lose some light, however, the .7x wide angle adapters I've seen don't usually eat too much light, so you might not lose very much in the way of light (maybe 1/3 of a stop or less even, it really depends on the design), however, you will definitely lose image quality by using the adapter.

No light loss here.
Image quality loss in video mode: insignificant if not zilch, just a minor colour shift. These vDSLR don't resolve more than 650 lines per picture high anyway.
I used my WA adapters mainly with the 24mm and even the the slight distortion is minimal, because the camera uses a the central part of the projected image only.
Be careful though with stray light falling on the front elements, as the flare control takes a hit.

Any chance that you have some video or maybe a pic or two using the wide angle?

Thanks in advance...

Sure. Very late for me now, have a shoot tomorrow and I have to go and get a Rode video mic for the 1D4 first thing in the morning. Hope it will work.

Picked up an wide angle lens last night... put it on the 50mm 1.4 and it looks pretty good to me. Will post tests later on. Stability-wise I find there is a lot less shake when shooting hand held and there doesn't seem to be any light loss that I saw...

That sounds like a good one - and as others have said, these cameras don't actually resolve much more than 650-750 lines anyways so it's possible that you might not notice much in the way of image degradation, and we are indeed shooting through the sweet spots of both the lenses and the adapters, so I would bet that while there is definitely degradation using these adapters, it's very possible that it may be virtually unnoticeable on these cameras in video mode so long as you get a high quality one. A Sony should be good.

Again for the record, you can't add glass and not lose *any* light - that's just an important principle to keep in mind, but it does seem that with these adapters the light loss is so minor that it may not be noticeable.

Right, sorry, I meant to say that. There is definitely light loss due to more glass, but it did not seem like a significant amount. Thanks for pointing that out thisisapocalypse...

Someone post up links and vids for these, because I'm very interested in this. This would help me out a lot.

Well, I did a quick test and I am pretty disappointed... I am thinking that adding a wide angle lens still might be a viable option, but just not this one. My canon wide lens that I had before this blew this lens out of the water! Any chance we can see your footage pix2?

Really, I find the sides very soft... In comparison to the stock lens at 35mm the stock lens looks way better imo.
