Wide Angle Adaptor for Canon HV40

Hi everyone,

I'm going skiing this winter and I was hoping to record some video on the slopes with our Canon HV40. This type of shooting always benefits from using a wide angle lens so I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the cheap 43 mm 0.45 X wide angle adaptors like this cheap one on eBay? I'm concerned about resolution, element coatings and edge softness. If someone could point me to a review of or some sample footage taken with an adaptor like this it would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

We got one for an HV20. I've seen it as low as $10. It works quite well for the price. HV20.com has reviews of others ones like Raynox.

Thanks, jleo, just what I was looking for.

It looks like even the cheap ones keep a fairly sharp image to the edges, so long as the macro converter is also used. It's probably worth the money.

Now I need to think about filters for the snow. Probably UV and polarising...?

When using wide angle lenses, change your auto-focus to normal instead of IAF. This is thru the lens autofocusing.

Oh wow, I didn't realise that the HV40 had a sensor on the outside like that. I suppose in addition to the focus positions being optically changed the adapter itself might get in the way of the sensor. Thanks for alerting me to that.

This lens doesn't get in the way, but the sensor is calibrated for the actual camera lens, so it's not accurate for the wide angle.
