F3: Why I bought an F35 instead of going 4K with the F5/F55

Harry Brown was shot in mega low light, with master primes.

it's proof you can get a great look from little light.

Yep, it's one of the lessons I learnt from S16mm, if you've got 500 ISO and a T/1.3 lens you can get a decent exposure with just streetlamps and a little supplemented fill where needed. So everything over ISO 500 is just gravy. It's why I love the F3 in SLOG - you can get a working stop of T/2-T/2.8 in no light at all.

Harry Brown looks like it was shot on Red, or something like AF100, Reid Redemption, not sure if I like the green, or any color tinted desaturated look, with a bit of metallic tint on skin, very solid film though and it really works, anything would work with Michael Caine, I guess :)
Lay the Favorite, has very film like, "Kodak" look, imho.

Miguel, have you shot anything lately on F35, that you can show, human faces, graded, please?

I can show something, here is a very mildy graded screen-grab from a short I shot recently. I've compressed it to a jpeg for screen, so don't just the details of it.

No lighting at all was used, it was shot on a cliff on the English coast, and it was freezing!

What a great camera...I'm amazed at the stuff coming out of mine. Still working on getting the PIx240 working with it. I am able to get 444 10-bit, but not 12-bit. Sound Devices suspects it may just be an erroneous reporting from the Pix due to SDI flags. I'm gonna see if I can shoot some gradations and see what I get. (or rustle-up and SDI analyzer to see what's coming outta my multiplexer).

That's a shame, it's near enough impossible finding a "reasonable" (ie sub $10,000) recorder that does 50P 10-bit.

But do keep in mind, without an additional IF box for the F35 enabling quad link HD SDI, we'll only ever get 422 10bit 50P

I do know Cinedeck are planning a new product, which will include 12-bit and proper 50P support. When I know more I will let y'all know

Or the company builds an interface which takes the quad-link from the F35 rear connector. It's a fair bit of effort though, the only two I know to have done it are Sony (SRW-1), Panavison (SSR-1) and Codex (Onboard)

I was going to buy a codex, they had a used one, but it was still £20,000!

The Sony SR-R1 will record RGB 4:4:4 12bit and 50p 4:2:2 10bit from the Sony F35. As shown at the start of this thread, I've built a docking mechanism to attach the SR-R1 to the back of the camera.

If anyone needs these capabilities for a shoot, I'm happy to rent the SR-R1 out. Just drop me a PM. It's also great with the F3 for variable frame rates up to 1080 60p.

Viddovation,

Would I be right in thinking the SR-R1 is still a "dumb" connection - ie. the camera can't trigger record, or receive timecode etc?

Not sure about timecode, but you are right that the SR-R1 is currently a "dumb" connection and can't be triggered by the camera.

I say currently because it all comes down to firmware, and I have spoken to a couple people at Sony and they haven't ruled out an F35 update that allows using the record button without a "docked" recorder - ie - SDI record flag.

But, don't count on it either.

Does anyone know of a second hand Sr-R1 for a good price? There's one on eBay, but they won't ship to my country. And it's new.

Who do we need to email to ask for that upgrade?

The common joke seems to be that the Product Development manager is named Helen Waite. That said, here are the action steps I recommend -

1. Ask for the features in the Sony F65 Community Forum. I already started a thread there, so you could add your voice to that one. To my knowledge there is not a separate F35 Community Forum. http://community.sony.com/t5/F65/bd-p/large-sensor-camera-F65

2. I would consider sending twitter messages to CineAltaNews/Peter Crithary. The F35, while neglected, is a CineAlta product, so this is appopriate. https://twitter.com/CineAltaNews

3. Email to production(at)am(dot)sony(dot)com. This address has been offered before by Sony for sending comments and thoughts on CineAlta line cameras.

4. The only avenue I got a personal confirmation that Sony (might) consider adding F35 features was when I called in for technical assistance with my SR-D1 recorder. I called 1-800-833-6817 for professional Sony product support. There's a bit of a phone tree, at the time, the correct sequence for Sony broadcast cameras (including CineAlta & SRMemory) was 2-5-2. I spoke to a couple people, but one who was very helpful and aware of the product line was a fellow named Ian.

Those are the avenues I am aware of. I would encourage everyone who's interested in using the F35 with recorders other than the SRW-1 or Codex to participate. That said, I would also ask everyone to keep their requests simple, practical, straightforward, and few. If we ask for too much, we may be more likely to get ignored.

For me, there are only two notable requests:

1. A "dummy" record mode for the F35, that enables the F35 record button to be used even if a recorder like the SRW-1 is not docked. Preferably, this would be an SDI record flag analogous to the one offered on the Sony PMW-F3.

2. Support on the Sony SR-R1 recorder to correctly read and record the VFR footage from the Sony F35. Preferably this would include support for ramping, but I'll take what I can get. My reasoning here is that since the SR-R1 already supports 17-60fps VFR from the F3, then it should be possible to do the same with the F35.

Thanks guys!
