F3: Why I bought an F35 instead of going 4K with the F5/F55

Tough decision, D21 vs. F35, makes me think, both look very attractive!

another show to check out is Human target, shot on D21, and ... Panasonic GH1, can easily spot which is which..
some read http://www.eoshd.com/content/tag/arri-d21

If it was me making the decision I would first choose the one that best fits my needs. If I was shooting weddings for example, I would never go for either.
If what I wanted is to shoot features, I would then check which one would be a better fit to the rest of my equipment. The D21 will need considerably bigger support and grip gear than a F35+Hyperdeck Shuttle. Shooting with a D21, even if you would waste it's potential and record to a Hyperdeck Shuttle, would be not much different than shooting with a 35mm film camera.

Then after that I would choose the image I liked the best.

Adamsenoj,
thank you for thoughts, not for weddings for sure, DSLRs and new C100 good enough for that..
short film, getting more "cinematic look", going for..
will it be much different with my own limited lighting , 4 banks kinoflos, Joker bugs, etc, not sure.. maybe not too much different,
considering totally different grip, sliders, cranes, makes me think..
Good idea though, look forward to see some good shots, taken by new owners of F35 on the board.

BTW D21 can record to inexpensive OB1 with flash mag 36, not sure about Arri raw, how friendly it is to work with..
Please share your thoughts on that if you've had experience.

The S-Two OB1 is inexpensive?

To shoot with the D21 and even the F35 at night and get a nice exposure you will need lights for sure if you don't want to bump the ISO.

just like the camera, can look for, find discounted highly..
ISO 200 (500),can be scary, if only one camera, however night, outdoors can be shot with different camera, as well as on camera mount, etc.. as you mentioned about GH2...

PS, interesting note about films shot on F35

interesting why, could not find the way to film all on F35?

Great post Viddovation...and congrats on your F35!

I made $7,000 on an F3 w/ paid S-log, MFT Nikon adapter, extra batteries, 2 x 32GB SXS cards, beautiful condition & low hours.

I was devastated & I'll never buy a new camera again.

I have a BT Red One MX & a used Scarlet right now. I wanted 4k, I wanted raw, and I wanted a filmic/cinematic look...I wouldn't trade these two cameras for the world.

Figure out what your needs are & buy used. You won't regret it!

Those outputs send slog and wide gamut if thats what you meant

S-Log is the (optional) gamma encoding of the RGB outputs on the interface box. S-log and RGB are two totally different things - one describing gamma correction to maximize the available bit depth of the system and the other describing how the signals are moved.

Wide Gamut setting refers to the number and position of colors the system can reproduce. In the menu, for space reasons, the term "Wide Color Gamut" to "Wide Gamut" was truncated to save space on the screen. In almost all cases, field monitors will not be able to represent all the colors the F35 can capture (true of many other cameras as well). There are projectors and print film that can take advantage of this extra information. Some VFX houses seem to like this as well even for TV work, allowing them to place colors as they wish. I am not a VFX artist, just going by various conversations.

Great list of films, projects, will check out as many as I can! Actively looking for a good deal on F35 package!

How would HyperDeck Studio Pro take the dual HD-SDI ?? You can record 1080p50 10 bit 422 with HyperDeck Studio Pro??

LeavingTheCandy, are you still planning to do the shoot with all the cameras you had mentioned in the F35 thread? Would love to see the results!

Hi All,

I've been posting in another thread on the '35, thought I would weigh in here too with a couple of points.

For backstory, I am UK-based DoP working in the low-budget drama sector ($5k to $500k budgets). I bought an F35 last year, upgrading from an F900 which had been a faithful companion.

Firstly, I see no-one has really mentioned lenses? A lot of DoPs will get much more excited talking about lenses, than they ever do about cameras. One of the advantages the ALEXA/D-21 had over the F35/Genesis - as some people have mentioned - is the ability to use anamorphic lenses (at least on the 4:3 models) without any crop or that stuff. So that's quite a big plus. Secondly, there are a lot of modern lenses (eg. Master Primes - as favoured by Deakins) which just have a mega-clinical look to them. You'd be amazed the difference they can make. I shoot with Zeiss Standard Speeds, and the difference between wide open and T4 is unbelievable!

Secondly, the ALEXA does use "HDR trickery". ARRI call it dual-gain-path architecture. Basically each photosite's output gets processed twice by two different a/d converters - one applying a high gain, one applying a low gain. It then combines these two afterwards. This is how it manages it's dynamic range.

Philosophically, the ALEXA and F35 are somewhat similar, in that they both are trying to get a "2K" picture out of a S35 sensor. ARRI use a bayer pattern which is exactly 1.5x resolution (do the maths, you'll see it works whatever frame size) to then bin down to a perfect picture. Sony/Panavision took a more brute force approach and used 1920 x 1080 x 3 x 2 pixels (RGB stripe pattern). ALEXA is a newer CMOS design, F35 is a much older CCD - it's the last of the big CCD cameras I think (Aaton Delta notwithstanding).

They're both *excellent* cameras, and any man who has to argue over a choice between the two is very lucky indeed! It's like being forced to choose between a Ferrari and an Aston Martin, there are no losers there!

Both make pretty pictures, and in my experience changing DoP will affect your image much more than changing camera.

Overall though, I am very happy to see these old titans getting loving, caring homes :D

Good insights. I'm very interested in the Alexa, but the lowest price I've seen was in the range of $45k USD, at the bottom F35 prices have been under $10k USD. This was a critical factor in my choice.

Another F35 film that hasn't been mentioned is 'Harry Brown' starring Michael Caine. For anyone worried about the F35 in low-light, that should answer your fears.

Oh yes, I love the framing in that movie.

I remember having this look for a film I went to shoot in Ireland, for which we wanted to shoot on the F35. But none were available and we were given the option of F3 (just released literally 3 days before) or the Genesis. We chose the F3. Wrong decission...
