Why did this Hyperdeck shuttle thread get CLOSED when the answer was unresolved?

I got an excited phone call from video gear in uk (where I bought it) to advise of the firmware beta upgrade. As far as I can see its a compressed avid 10bit codec which you can run within premiere pro with the codec installed. Yum. Hope I got this right.

His message links to another thread where you will find most of your answers. However its in the F3 forum which I don't follow so not sure why he closed the thread here..

So is it now recording compressed DnxHD instead of uncompressed? If so I shall pop in to Videogear forthwith!

hmm, me too. Do we know if it triggers from the record button on the camera? Over in that F3 forum it looks like there is also some debate about whether or not the SD-HDMI passthrough will work with all monitors. Might be worth just selling my DP4 and getting the Samurai.

That thread started by giving me hope ( that it was a firmware upgrade) and then ...went on to dash them. It was inconclusive.

It's a different product. The Hyperdeck Shuttle records only uncompressed. You have to buy new hardware (the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2) to have the prospect of uncompressed and DNxHD.

Well, I don't know how definitive it is, but I'm basing my statements on this article in Broadcast Engineering:
http://blog.broadcastengineering.co...tle-2-with-avid-dnxhd-recording-and-playback/

My interpretation from that is that it's a new product, it replaces the older version, and that it's new hardware.

If someone somehow manages to download the software and make it work on an original Hyperdeck Shuttle, well, hey, that'll trump my interpretation!

Its a free Codec and can be edited in Premiere, Avid. (dont know about FCP)

I consider it one of the 2 best 'universal" codecs. (with Prores)

ie Cross platform, cross facilty, high quality...

I have confirmation in email from Black Magic support that the original version of the Shuttle will not support DNxHD. You must purchase the new hardware.

I have downloaded the firmware and attempted to use it on my Version 1 Shuttle. Does not work.

Interesting the codec is built into the hardware like the NanoFlash is. If only it had ProRes………..

I don't come to the same conclusion. The first version doesn't have codec. It stored uncompressed files. So they needed a new design to accommodate a codec. In fact, the beta version of the firmware for the codec is downloadable from their site. So while the first shuttle cannot accommodate codecs, the second one may be offering other downloadable codecs in the future.

Well, a codec is a COmpressor/DECompressor. Uncompressed is, therefore, something different.

The verbiage might be repurposed, I guess; I mean, if you look in the file properties and it says "Codec: Uncompressed", that doesn't really mean there's an uncompressed codec there, it just means that they probably didn't know how else to convey that information.

A codec is typically a hardware chip that takes it upon itself to compress or uncompress the data, and the original Hyperdeck just didn't have that chip at all. It wasn't intended to. The new one has added a codec chip. Whether it can handle codecs other than DNxHD remains to be seen, it might be a hardware DNxHD chip and therefore only able to handle DNxHD, I guess only time (and future press releases) will tell.
