A recent review of a PAL GH2 sort of maybe implies a bit, possibly, that the GH2 has a 25p mode at 17mbps, but the forum is alive with speculation.

How bad is 17mbps as opposed to 24mpbs?

Are any of these assumptions true?

Good grief, it's ridiculous that we're forced to flounder for information like this. I wouldn't expect Panasonic to engage in the banter on internet forums, I think Red made a mistake in doing so, but a press release could clear all this up.

Yeah, I got yelled at yesterday in another thread for saying that while it was POSSIBLE that the GH2 uses (or will use after last-minute tweaks) PsF to put true progressive 25P into 50i, we did not KNOW that yet.

Am I wrong about that - did I miss a confirmation of that somewhere? Bloom does seem to say this on his blog, but if true I would have expected more buzz on the forum ??

Yup, this was what Bloom wrote. The problem is to be limited to 17mbps unless Panasonic will change it with the delay as rumored.

I don't think you're wrong. If Phil Bloom is saying it works the same as the GH1, then I would imagine that it is. But, yeah, it's more speculation. If the GH2 has 25p as it was in the GH1, then that's fine by me.

are you not annoyed you won't get full native 25p?

It's easy enough to extract pure 25P from 25PsF .... for example, I transcode to Cineform anyway, and their HDLink transcoding app wll do the extract on the fly..

That's if they don't include it in the European model after all. If the GH2 has 25p implemented the way it was in the GH1, then I will probably go for it. The GH1 worked for me for a year or so pretty well without the hack. So, if I can get another camera that does the same, with better low light ability, good lens compatibility and 24p, then I would be happy with that.
But yeah, in an ideal world I'd prefer it to have the 24mbs 25p function

Thanks for all your efforts on the main thread BTW

My bet is the GH2 is coming with 25p, full 24mbit ala the 24p for PAL, question is can we still have the option for 24p too?

Why would you doubt native 24P 24Mbs? - that's confirmed already in several places, including Bloom, IIRC.

My bet is that 25P will only come in a 50i stream. I had my doubts that it would be PsF, but other folk seem confident that it is. I also believe that the 25P/50i stream is presently only 17Mbs - Panasonic themselves state in the GH2 manual that only the 24P mode got the rate bump. BUT this is one change that Panasonic could perhaps be implementing last-minute???

There is no way on Earth Panasonic are going to release a 25p 24Mb change to the UK/EU model. For parity, they'd have to include a 30p 24Mb in the US, which is pie in the sky.

As Graham says guesses above, if we do get any thing, it will be the ability to record 25/30p in a 50/60i wrapper ala GH1 at 17Mb. And I remain doubtful of that on release to be honest. Possibly in a v1.2 once everyone has done enough moaning.

24p is actually part of NTSC framerates, but not PAL. So including 25p in a PAL model wouldn't be like including 30p in an NTSC model.

25p = PAL film framerate
24p = NTSC film framerate
50i = PAL full motion
60i = NTSC full motion
30p = Weird half-hearted film framerate wannabe neither here nor there. No where near as essential to NTSC users as 25p is to PAL users. :) Okay, that last part isn't really true... but I think most people would use 24p not 30p if they had the option.

Why can't people get that 24p is 100% incompatible with PAL? As far as official specs go anyway.

So, I think there really is a way on earth that Panasonic could include 25p... it's so unheard of not to have it in a prosumer camcorder these days!

Yes, we want 50i and native 25p, please no more in the wrapper, but I guess pal would be happy with 25p in a 1080i wrapper at 24mbs? yes that would be a good compromise!

btw, love to see the originals of these clips for 1080i, maybe I need my eyes checking but looks very very good for utube.

Much as I hesitate to add to this debate, the standard of discourse on this forum really is eyebrow-raisingly bad.

There is no way on Earth Panasonic are going to release a 25p 24Mb change to the UK/EU model.

How can we possibly know what Panasonic's intentions are? I hasten to add I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing, I'm just tired of reading grandiose pronouncements along the lines of "X will/won't do Y". We have no information.

24p is actually part of NTSC framerates

In what way is 24p "part of NTSC framerates"? It's got absolutely nothing to do with NTSC.

Why can't people get that 24p is 100% incompatible with PAL?

Wait, what? 25p HD has nothing to do with "PAL" in any case. PAL is a colour encoding scheme for SD video which has very little to do with any HD video format. In any case, the idea that 24p is somehow "100% incompatible" with PAL is both incorrect, since PAL people have been watching movies for decades with no problem, and meaningless - what would "50% compatible" mean?

I have very little interest in furthering either of these arguments, and I apologise for picking on them as minor examples of a trend, but really - can we engage brain-to-keyboard filter before posting stuff like this?

If 25P has nothing to do with official AVCHD specs, how come a lot of cameraes are actually able to record in AVCHD 25P? Like Panasonics HMC series etc.
Give us 25P 24Mb option in Europe, pleeeeaaaaasse....it is not good for Panasonics reputation that they do not even seem to listen or communicate with their dedicated customers in this case.

Those cameras record a 25p video stream wrapped inside an interlaced 50i container, which is one of the supported formats in both AVCHD and Blu-ray specs. The GH1's 1080p25 PAL video mode is also wrapped inside an interlaced 50i container. The PAL GH2 produces the same 50i wrapper, but it contains a 50i video stream instead of the 25p stream that many PAL users would prefer.

Without 25p I cannot properly cut my material with the other cameras, the existing stock-material or even my other Panasonic cameras.
I'm on a PAL continent and would never buy a camera that does not support PAL. So for upgrading from my GH-1 I'll look elsewhere.
