The full short is now completed and online:

Now i can move on to new things. Pretty excited to do so.

BTW -- Best way to get in touch with me personally is through the vimeo page or my email (which is also listed there). Since I don't check this forum regularly enough.

Thanks for all the comments so far. Very appreciated.

Really nice! Love the look! Great acting and sound design.

A few too many camera moves for my taste.

All in all, really well done!

You have an amazing eye. Your performers are superb. Love the locations. Just a really powerful look and feel. But like so many shorts, the writing failed you. The premise and ideas were there, but I didn't find the quality of the writing matched the quality of the shooting and acting. If you put that together you're gonna go far, I bet.

I kinda disagree Sean. I think the premise is the motivation for the story, meaning the story is about capturing a moment. I don't see this piece as being anecdotale or needing to have a moral or a traditional begining - middle - end. I really feel its about the moment of dying. And that simple moment in my opinion is beautifully executed and the wrting does a wonderful job of setting it up.
I really see this short as a brilliant case study rather than a traditional story.

Just what I got out of it,
Rock

I didn't say I needed a moral or traditional ending. I think this film is quite spectacular and I'd hire the guy in a heartbeat. He's exceptionally talented. When I say the writing didn't live up to the rest, it's not the ending I had a problem with. There is lovely subtlety to the performances and cinematography. He's got a killer style. Not so with the writing, though. It's clunky in parts, while the underlying intention is really good. It could have simply been brought home a little more effectively with better writing. The attempts at poetic drama miss the mark and confound me a bit. A polish is what it needed. The story is great. The visuals are fantastic. The dialogue and the details of how the story is delivered are not on the same level as the rest of it. As a short, this guy clearly has demonstrated he has what it takes. As a writer, I believe he'll go farther if he can take his own writing to the next level or gets help doing that. I hate to be critical of something so good. But it's only in the interest of seeing someone very, very talented go the whole distance, and he's a fellow Torontonian at that. This guy will knock it out of the park if he gets all his ducks in a row.

Hm. I actually feel like I'm doing something wrong by criticizing such a good short. So let me say, please watch this short and admire a real talent.

My single criticism is only in the interest in pushing someone to be even better. In a sea of bad, imitative short films, this one is original and super cool.

Check out the early work of a dude you'll be watching on the big screen soon.

hey just had time to add a reply now.

Thanks for the comments guys. All opinions are good -- don't worry!

The comments on the vimeo page have been overwhelming, and it's only been a day. Was expecting it to drop a little quieter than that, so its very cool.

So thanks again to everyone who's checking it out, whether you dug it or not. ;)

awesome stuff man.

one question on audio. what did you use for audio?

also did you use any kind of 35mm adapeter?

I owned a Rode NT2(i think) shotgun mic, which my sound guy used with a Boom and pro mixing deck of some kind. I'm not familiar with the details really, but we had rented some decent sound gear. He managed to figure out a way to route the sound in to the hv20's mic jack, and it worked out nicely for the most part... we had some glitches, but figured it out.

no 35mm adapters. I don't really like the DIY ones, and the more expensive ones are nice, but out of my budget.

Absolutely outstanding stuff! I first caught wind of this through Prolost and I'm stoked to have seen the final version!

When I grow up I want to end up with something as polished as that - inspirational....
:)

shot with as much dynamic range in camera as possible, and then Color corrected carefully. Also, I did extensive tests in pre-production to nail down the look I wanted.

and thanks guys.

Great short. I agree with Sean, dialogue got clunky, a few gratuitous cuts in the opening dialogue scene. but not to detract from something I thought was watchable and enjoyable from start to end. Graded very nicely.

Great work .
I felt there was something off when he asked the guy the name off the place.Did you delibrately cross the axis ?
Butt I enjoyed it . Very professional.Nice Titles & credits.
