which is the best edditing solution????

if you have to choose between 'MBp + FCS" or a "PC laptop + Edius broadcast".

Difference in price is a no issue. Important to me is which edditing platform is :

- most user friendly
- has to highest edditing power with respect to speed, multiple timelines, special effects, external storage capabilities etc.
- is the most future proof (updating possibilities of the software, acceptance by professional studios)

It really comes down to a preference. It's just which one you prefer. There are going to be plenty of folks that prefer the mac option, and some who will tell you to go with EDIUS. Just try them both out if you can, and make that decision for yourself. Everyone will prefer something different.

I use EDIUS. I use it for the ease of the p2 workflow and excellent p2 integration/support. I use it for raw power/speed.

FCP has greater market penetration in the "professional" world. I believe that EDIUS is gaining/will be gaining considerable ground in the broadcast world.

I am new to editting so user friendlyness is very important. I want to be able to use it in a very short time without being an expert (that will take some more time) so my payback time will be short. I have no experience with either systems (which is also an advantage because I am able to learn either) so it is up to you people to give me helpfull advice :-)

Well, I have never used FCP, so I can't speak to that. I do know that it is generally considered to be more robust, in terms of features, options, etc.

I am fairly new to editing myself, so... I didn't find EDIUS to be to hard at all. The user interface isn't the best, (lost in translation, I guess) but it's not hard to get used to, and not hard to begin doing some basic editing, with transitions, and cuts from the get-go. The thing I like about EDIUS is it's power, and with a good enough system, it is render free. Everything is real-time. And you don't have to waste time, or hard-drive space re-wrapping files into another format. Just drop the mxf files from the hvx straight onto the timeline and go. Edit straight off the card if you want, even.
I understand that the latest version of FCP has really improved the p2 workflow. The re-wrapping to .mov's is done as a background task now, but you still have to do it, before you can work with the footage.

I'm sure there will be some folks along to tell you about FCP. Bottom line... the reason I went with EDIUS, is because of it's hassle free p2 workflow, and its pure power, and real-time editing. Those were the most important factors for me personally. So they got my money.

Hope it helps,
Jason

Ramjet : what kind of system requirements do I need for a laptop PC if I want to go for Edius? What do you use for storage? I read lately a lot about G-Raid. What is so fancy about it ?

I am using a core duo 2.16. 2 gig ram, 240 gig internal hdd.

For storage, I am using an eSATA expresscard, eSATA Thecus dual bay enclosure, and 2 320 gig SATA II drives in that enclosure.

It screams, plenty fast with that setup.

For more info. about the specifics of my comp, just check the acer 9805 out.
It has a huge monitor though, so you would probably be looking for a smaller one.

I don't know much about G-Raid.

once i get my new macbook pro core 2 duo, 2.33 with 2 gigs of ram in the mail, ill let you know :)

muahahaha

You'll love the 17" either way, if you're not frequently hooking up an external display.

I am very happy with the FCP workflow and p2 features (as of 5.1.2) but I have no experience with edius.

If you go the Mac route, you actually have both options open, as you can boot into XP through bootcamp.

There is (or maybe was) a catch with the sata drives for the towers, but it could have been fixed with the latest drivers update. (don't have one to test on...)

From the tests I've seen lately - the mac hardware are very favourably priced compared to Dells and HPs.

I've seen some tests suggesting this. I just recently compared a Vaio (from amazon) and a mbp, and found the prices to be pretty much in level.

The Vaio was slightly cheaper, and had more RAM and bigger HD (clear win) but the MBP was faster and had a better graphics card and a fast enough HD for editing...

All in all they seemed to be similarily priced, but for MBP's OSX option.

One thing you can find on the PC side (which is a clear and important win for them) is PCMIA slots, so you can offload P2 cards directly to the computer.

The Dells & HPs seems to come out worse compared to the MBC.

Point is: As of today, there's no clear winner, but the Mac gives you more options in the software department than the PC - at a similar or lower price - depending on who you ask.

I have had my 1st gen MBP 2.16 run for weeks without downtime. That actually counts the most for me...

Get a MBP with final cut pro. MacBook Pro can run windows and final cut pro. You can learn FCP in 10 hours from www.lynda.com no joke, I did and now I am a Certified Editor. I am sure edius is a great program but the extras that come with FCP is what makes it great. Motion, DVD Studio, and Soundtrack Pro. I love it! If you were comparing adobe premiere and FCP then I would say it is a toss up because premiere has a nice bundle as well.

Nik, the lynda.com site is very nice hint, thank you very much.

Gunleik, Was it a vaio from the AR series? Another doubt I have about the MBp is that it looks more fragile (maybe because it is so thin) than an PC laptop. What are you experiences in this respect? Do you have to be very careful with it when you are on the road with it?

As for the edit system, If you can hold off about a month, there is some good news coming.

TedRR : I can still wait for a month. You make me very curious. Can you give a hint if you are talking Mac or PC?

gunleik : so you think that a pc laptop with the same features as a MBp is more expensive than the MBp?

I've used Macs exclusively, but recently started looking at pc laptops with PC Card slots.

Having the same features is different than quality builds. If you want a quality built laptop, my sense is that the PCs and Macs are about the same.

However, getting a 2 GHz core duo 13" MacBook for about $1099.00 is not possible for PCs in my research

It's a PC option. I swear I'm not trying to be a tease. It's just that they'd have to kill me if I said anymore. :)

It's actually close enough that they might let me spill the beans. I'll check with them.

Any frame rate, resolution mixed on the same timeline, convert to most any format including Flash and real time! Storyboard and Timeline. Another Swiss Army type tool.
Oh shikes, I already said too much.

I'm buying a new car, should I go with a Toyota or Honda?

Go find folks using various NLEs, sit with them an watch them edit, ask questions, then decide which one appeals to you the most. They all do the same thing.

And today's top of the line is tomorrows middle of the road and next year's whatever. They change so much and so fast, there's no way of saying who'll be doing what eight months from now.
